We spend two nights, but not in the main building but in the other one, just one block away, which is, I guess, where the less expensive rooms are. Considering that the hotel is advertised as 4 stars, the rooms were too little. Ours was also nosy, since it looked to The House of Horror, which must be really good since visitors screamed constantly, even in the night. What was really 4 stars, and even 5, was the staff at the reception desk, in the main building. They were very helpful and kind with us, and they helped us to have a very time in the city. The wifi was not good. The transportation service in and out of old city is very well organized
The hotel is in a great situation inside the city walls. It is so much better to stay here than come as a day visitor as by late afternoon or early morning you have the city to yourself. Hordes of tourists arrive soon after 10 am. We had a very good suite with excellent bathroom and walk in shower. Two televisions but neither showed English programmes, only French or CNN etc. BBC world advertised but not available which is poor. Also the only newspapers on offer are Le Figaro or NY Times. No English papers. We asked to do the history lecture/aperitif as advertised on the notice board but it wasn't available every day (as it said) and one member of staff told us to go and book it ourselves! We had a very good receptionist who did try and book it for us (Laura) and the male receptionists were all very helpful too. When we arrived I picked up a glass in the room and it was smeared with lipstick. However, the hotel offered us a free drink in recompense. Breakfast was good with cereals, croissants etc and cooked breakfasts if required at the buffet. Coffee is by a Nespresso machine! Ok but not as good as a good cafe au lait. Fridge in room, with tea making facilities etc. No smoking hotel but sad to have someone smoking near us on the terrace restaurant. We don't have that in Australia. Oddly enough there is absolutely no information in the room about the hotel or facilities.
Loved this hotel, this was our second visit and they did not disappoint, great service, lovely room and the bedding was perfect. We will return as soon as we can. Special shout out to the young guy who picked us up at the parking lot, so friendly and helpful.
Right in the heart of the old city and close to everything. Walkable to the main town also. Hotel dates back centuries but is fairly well modernised. Our room smelt chokingly bad of bleach and was quite stifling, although I think this was just a one off. Parking, and the bus to the hotel was much easier than expected!
Room, not in the main building, was quite small but cozy and very clean. It was so fun being within the castle walls. I think there might be 3 or 4 buildings that are involved with the Le Donjon. We could easily walk within the walls or go down to the town of Carcassonne. At dusk we walked around the castle walls for wonderful views and sunsets.
Only stayed 1 night on our way to the Pyrenees. Totally authentic experience with a great staff and a clean, friendly hotel. It is not a luxury hotel but has a nice room in a great location. Breakfast was good and reasonable.
We have always wanted to stay in Carcassonne overnight and were glad we picked this hotel to do that. It was lovely, and we chose the cheaper "bar" breakfast of coffee/pain/ or coffee and pain au chocolate etc and sat outside in the tree lined garden with the sun trickling through the trees. One of the smallest bedrooms ever for a Best Western BUT they have had to do this to accommodate the ensuite. If you want a bigger bedroom ask for the newer extension. For us it was lovely, and ver comfortable. As I had forgotten my charger they charged my phone overnight. Very helpful with directions at Reception. Multi-lingual staff.
Best Western Le Donjon Les Remparts - La Maison des Remparts was an enjoyable visit to a unique location. Initially though, it was a disappointment. Not only were we met with rain as we turned north towards Carcassonne, but we soon realized that we weren't even in the main building of the hotel. After we paid to park in a private lot, we were driven by shuttle to a location nearby that was built into the fortification walls! Fortunately, the sun came out the following morning and everything looked more promising. On a visit to the main building of the hotel, we realized how modern portions of the interior were in comparison to our little niche on the outer wall. There were busy conference rooms being utilized within the attractively restored hotel. The reception, located in the main building, had very friendly and efficient staff that answered all of our questions. Our building, by contrast, was extremely quiet. The king-sized bed was very comfortable for a first night stay after a trans-Atlantic flight. The bathroom was modernized and answered all of our needs. We loved our little window against the outer wall where we could look out over our neighbors toward the valley below. Additionally, we had a circular stone stairway that led to our room and there were attractive common areas located on the entry level. Off we went to make use of our cameras and iPhones. The Medieval City isn't very large, but it's enough to keep you entranced for a couple of days of soaking in the history. Numerous tours were offered, but we decided to roam on our own. The outer walls were fascinating to walk in and around. Although there are tourists visiting throughout the day, there were places that we found that, at least in mid-May, weren't as congested. Additionally, there were numerous small restaurants where you could try out the traditional tasty cassoulet. Le Donjon Les Remparts can be a fun experience....even if you end up on the outer walls! We would encourage everyone interested in French history to visit this unique city and chose between one of three buildings associated with Le Donjon.
Such a beautiful hotel within the old castle walls of Carcassonne. Absolutely amazing to stay in the old town. During the day it is full of visitors, however in the early morning I had the town to myself, which was so magical. The hotel was fantastic, we had a superior room which was large, beautifully decorated and very clean with a great bathroom. Breakfast, although not what we preferred, was very plentiful. The hotel was so special in its medieval décor, suits of armour, plush chair and window dressings, just lovely. It was such a wonderful experience to stay there, thoroughly recommend.
It seemed like a good idea - find a hotel inside the old walled city. There is no traffic inside the old city during the daytime - but unfortunately this means that service vehicles and delivery vehicles all arrive in the very early morning. Staying in this hotel I couldn't get any sleep after 6am! It was very noisy as the traffic rolled along the old narrow cobbled streets. It was also noisy in the late evening from neighbouring bars. This is not something I've found elsewhere in France. The hotel itself was very pleasant with a good breakfast but I wouldn't stay here again because of the noise.
