The room was tiny and cold. My pillow was lumpy. The bed was hard. But this hotel is right in the middle of the medieval city of Carcassone which is awesome! This hotel is all about location. It is fun to walk around the town. The restaurant right across from the entrance to the hotel was part of the hotel and the food was excellent. Set your expectations that this hotel is not about comfort or luxury and that you're staying there for the location. It's worth it!
Great hotel in the middle of this beautiful setting. Excellent service and an upgrade to a family room in the Courtyard. While their restaurant is not in the building it is immediately next door. Breakfast is available in the hotel. It is a very atmospheric hotel in the centre of the ‘cite’. Plenty of restaurants locally and down the hill to the main town.
Stayed here in November. We were greeted by an extremely friendly and helpful member of staff behind the reception desk, unfortunately I can’t remember his name, but he’s the template in how everyone should be dealt with at a hotel reception desk. The hotel building is no doubt very old, the decor inside matches it but is tasteful. Our room was lovely, quiet, warm, and plenty of room in the bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable. We didn’t eat at all in the hotel, choosing to head out for breakfast amongst the natives each morning but our friends said it was good. It’s a good base from where to enjoy all that the old city has to offer and only a 20 minute walk into the new town .
Lovely old building with great character inside the City walls. Staff friendly and helpful and parking reasonable. Room was very small but had everything. Breakfast was poor. Unfortunately many restaurants/bars closed as out of season but those open were friendly and welcoming.
Being a chain you can expect rooms to be as good as on any other Best Western hotel. However what we found remarkable was the service from the whole staff working there: from cleaners to the receptionist. They speak perfect english, their advices are useful and concise and the best of all, they treat you with friendliness and respect at the same time. Thanks a lot to all the team.
Great hotel! It is INSIDE the old city / castle walls. Use the GPS coordinates to go to the welcome centre (inside the gate) and they will send a shuttle driver down to meet you and take you to the parking lot. After ditching your car and arriving, you will love the hotel and being inside the old city walls! Very clean and modern inside the hotel. Excellent spot to stay. Very friendly staff too!
The 20 Euro for parking was the best investment: we pulled into the moat below the city wall, a tiny hotel van guided us to a parking lot and then took us over the drawbridge, under archways, through narrow streets and corridor-type lanes to the hotel. The entrance to our room at the back was through a lovely garden with large shady trees, The room was large, comfortable, big bathroom and a lovely patio on the garden. Tea/coffee making facilities made it perfect. The entire walled town is within a few steps. Although the cite is overrun with tourists during the day, by evening everything is quiet and mysterious. Breakfast is nice and plentiful.
The hotel is inside the city walls in a beautiful setting. You will need to park outside and have the porter drive your bags into the walled city. The location makes this hotel worth the money, just so when everyone else leaves the ramparts to the city below, you can retire to your room around the corner. Due to a mix up in the morning with the night staff, the porter was not available to help us take the bags to the parking area for an early morning flight - the manager was able to call another hotel for help; his quick thinking, turned a major problem into a better experience - which is why I am rating the hotel better than I would have otherwise.
Literally just steps away from the castle in the medieval walled city, this Best Western looks nothing like the US version! From the stone exterior to the period furnishings in the lobby, the hotel really captures the mood. My executive suite had a twin bed in the living area—perfect for lounging and watching TV when not in use—and a queen bed in the separate bedroom. The bathroom had a large soaking tub and shower and there was a separate WC. Note that because you have to access this room via stairs, it's not handicapped accessible, although the hotel does have rooms on the ground floor for that purpose.
The hotel occupies 3 buildings within the walled city-castle. It has been modernized for contemporary travelers but the many levels and connections make finding one's room challenging the first time even with good directions. But our room had a wonderful view of the ancient looking city. Decoration withing the lobby with suits of armor was quite legitimate considering its history. Our room was comfortable as were the beds. The breakfast buffet was pretty much standard for the hotels on our Trafalgar tour. There is so much history in Carcassone that staying at Le Donjon made it come to life in spite of all the souvenir shops around the streets of the town.
