St. Petersburg, or St. Pete, as it is locally called, is a city in the Tampa Bay-area in Florida. The city is mostly known thank to its Salvador Dalí Museum, but also has wonderful beaches and hosts a wide variation of events annually.
St. Petersburg has the reputation of being the Sunshine City, thanks to having over 360 days of sunshine a year on average, thus holding the Guinness World Record for most consecutive days of sunshine. Other important institutions located in downtown St. Petersburg include several museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Salvador Dalí Museum, the Florida Holocaust Museum, dozens of art galleries, the Palladium Theatre, and Haslam’s Book Store. The latter is a half-block long book store with new and used books. Most of the dining and nightlife can be found on or near Central Avenue of Beach Drive along the waterfront.
St. Petersburg has the third-largest public waterfront park system in North America, stretching seven miles, 11 kilometers. It is used year-round for all kinds of public events, festivals, and other activities. Besides that, St. Petersburg has miles and miles of award-winning beaches, which are perfect for lounging around but are also popular with kite surfers. One of the most popular beaches is Fort De Soto.
The most historic districts of St. Petersburg are located near the waterfront. North of Downtown St. Petersburg, you will find Historic Old Northeast and Snell Isle, both housing Mediterranean style homes, parks, and recreational areas. Besides those, Old Northeast has a shopping district, landmarks, and beaches. The west of St. Petersburg houses the Grand Central District and Historic Kenwood. Visit these neighborhoods for cafés, art galleries, restaurants, and bars.
Many events are hosted in St. Petersburg throughout the year, such as food festivals, Gay Pride Parades, and a Grand Prix. Popular events include the Blues Festival, with multiple live blues artists, free drinks, and food, and the Santa Parade that’s kicking of the holidays. One of the many art festivals, called the Mainsail Art Festival, is free entry art exhibition at the Vinoy Park.
