Overpriced for such an old hotel. Decor in the rooms very old and dated. Proximity to Waterfront is the only reason i would stay here. The hotel has no view. You feel as if you are in the middle of an industrial estate.
We stayed at the PortsWood for 5 nights in March. We would definitely return to this hotel on our next stay in CapeTown. It is quiet and a very safe short walk to the waterfront activities and restaurants. The staff could not of been more friendly, polite and helpful. Dinner recommendations were superb - try the Baia! - and breakfast at the PortsWood was lovely. The rooms are very nice - and our every request was met. We needed different adapters for our outlets - and they supplied them I loved the quiet almost residential feel to the hotel - and felt completely safe on the very short walk to the restaurants and shopping on the waterfront. A fantastic price for this location! In addition - we used Gabriel Booysen for a private tour around the Cape. Great experience and would use Gabe tours again! They can book him from the hotel.
We had a four night stay in March and the hotel's proximity to the V&A Waterfront is super, far enough away not to have the noise but only a few minutes walk down a set of steps. We had a standard double room which was clean and comfortable and an average size my only comment would be that the air conditioning was too loud to have on overnight which wasn't an issue too much during our stay. As others have said the pool is closed due to the water restrictions but I still had a nice hour or so on a sunbed in a quiet location. We only ate breakfast at the hotel which was fine and the service from the bar staff was excellent. We had a delay with our hire car being delivered to the hotel on our day of departure and the chap on reception and door man (I'm sorry I can't remember their names) were both very helpful in trying to resolve our issue. Overall, super location, friendly staff in an average 4* hotel, we would return.
Very well located this hotel is close enough to the V&A but far enough away from the smell of the restaurants and noise. Pool isn't open because of the water restrictions and no plugs in the tubs. It is a very well run hotel. We only ate breakfast in the hotel. The pancakes freshly made were a highlight.
We had two stays separated by two weeks. During the first stay I was woken at 2am by shouting and talking very loudly in atrium which went on for 30 min. Eventually I went out and asked them to be quiet. Often request to staff were not fully understood or remembered fully - eg meal requests etc. 2nd stay we had a cramped room as we requested twin beds. Our friends had afree upgrade so they were happier.
We knew we were onto a winner; Siphosethu, the lovely doorman, sprang to our side as we drove up and provided us with a refreshing cold drink once inside. With a 2 minute stroll down to the harbour the location was perfect. The room had a vast comfy bed with quality linen, ensuring a great night's sleep. The food was lovely, provided by lovely staff, including the chefs and waiters & waitresses. Henry the barman, soon got to know what your favourite tipple was. The travel lady, Nellie, arranged some excellent activities for us, showing the patience of a saint. The reception staff always on hand to help out. There are too many lovely staff to name everyone individually, so thank-you all and Mandla, keep smiling. Mrs B
Another fabulous visit to the Portswood hotel. Our umpteenth visit to this hotel. Brilliant staff - if you need anything just ask. The sister hotel next door - the Commodore is excellent too. If you are B & B you can eat in either restaurant - we always do this and staff get to,know you. Superb position 2 minutes from waterfront just down the steps outside the hotel. Restaurant in the hotel will cater for your needs - again - just ask. The Portswood is an historic site and ‘protected’ - take a peek inside. You will not be disappointed I promise you. Once visited, friends forever - we know we’ve been going there nigh on 18 years. Beautiful spa in the Commodore hotel (sister hotel). A home from home - go check it out. Beautifully kept, comfortable, very clean and truly welcoming.
Stayed for 4 nights at the start of our tour of South Africa. Staff friendly and helpful. Room comfortable with tea and coffee facilities and cosmetics. Breakfast was very good, we tried two meals at the sister hotel The Commodore but they were of similar quality on both sites. We also ate in the hotel each evening as we were too tired from exploring to venture far and the quality was again very good, also one could have a snack or a full meal in the restaurant. The swimming pool was small and covered for part of the day because of the drought issues but we didn't actually use it.
I found myself staying in Cape Town when my husband had a stroke and we were therefore not able to take our booked cruise. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at the hotel as they knew my circumstances and went out of their way to make me feel welcome, safe and were very caring without being intrusive. For the rest of my life I will remember their collective kindness to me. I believe people make a difference to every business and certainly The Portswood Hotel has great staff i.e. from the staff at the front door, reception staff, dining room/kitchen staff, bar staff and the ladies who looked after my room. The food whether your are talking about breakfast, lunch or dinner is simply excellent (and there is a lot of it - probably too much). Unfortunately I have a food allergy (sulphates) which means I am not able to eat a lot of things without getting violently ill. The chefs were fantastic; they would cook my meal without the things which I cannot eat. The food tasted and looked great. My room was certainly large enough for me and was very well maintained. I had a separate bathroom and overlooked the swimming pool. Whilst it was a short, safe walk to the V & A Waterfront Area the surrounds of the immediate hotel were so peaceful with good outdoor areas to sit quietly. When my husband was discharged from hospital he also stayed at the hotel for 6 nights and fully supports my view. We provided a review direct to the hotel which named specific staff members who went out of their way to be helpful and supportive to me. The Portswood Hotel is a real gem. I don't make this statement lightly as my husband and I have been travelling the world regularly since 1978 and have stayed in many hotels across a wide variety of countries.
I had the pleasure of hosting a group at the Portswood Hotel prior to boarding a cruise out of Cape Town. The staff are very welcoming and highly efficient. The rooms were very nicely appointed and one’s every need was catered for. They also have a traditional Cape Malay buffet that I found very tasty, although those who do not like spicy food should order from their ala carte menu. The hotel is a few paces from the wonderful world of dining, shopping and entertainment and it gets a definate thumbs up from me!
