We only had one night here but enjoyed it - the rooms are large and beautifully decorated with very comfortable beds. There was some renovation work going on but it did not disturb us - it is worth saying that the main road is just that, so some traffic noise but the nighttime was peaceful enough. The big bonus for us was the staff, who could not have been more helpful and friendly. Food and drinks excellent, although lunch was very slow to arrrive. Would definitely stay again
Let me start by saying that we have stayed at Sugar Hotel before and I would have give them an excellent review. The room was beautiful and spacious and the staff very friendly and helpful. Needless to say that after our first visit we were eager to return. Our experience this weekend however was very disappointing. We were allocated the new room on the bottom floor where the spa used to be. This room was extremely small, noisy, and lacked a sense of privacy. The noise from the renovations and all of the guests and staff was never ending. On check out the Sunday morning I mentioned that we were not happy with our room and did not have a good experience and the only response I received was that we should book further in advance to ensure a better room. I find this completely unacceptable. If you pay a premium price to stay at a 5 star hotel you expect a certain standard. If this standard cannot be maintained and all of your guest are inconvenienced by your renovation then at least try to make up for it in some way. My in laws have stayed at Sugar numerous times but had the same disappointing experience the weekend before. Sad to say I don't think either of us will return to this hotel.
Being an avid traveller I've always been fond of hospitality in Cape Town, a world class African city. While most of the hotels and lodges I've stayed at have generally been excellent, there are one or two I'd avoid. The Sugar Hotel is definitely one of them. The negative experience started when this establishment booked me into their newly renovated room on the ground floor that sits between the reception and the restaurant. First day of checking in, the noise from the construction next door was so loud, my teacups were vibrating. This went on for at least an hour. I complained and asked for another room on the upper levels, only to be told that they're "quite full". I was then told that if the noise really gets unbearable, they can try make an arrangement to move me. It wasn't just the groundbreaking drilling that annoyed me. The room's entrance being next to a busy corridor, you could hear every sneeze coming from the reception, car engine roars from the street outside, and never-ending chit chats and footsteps of staff and guests walking past the 12 sqr metre room. All this happened while the windows and door were completely shut. The only place in the room where I could find a bit of peace was inside the toilet. 15 min later, I asked to be moved again, as I had a concall the next day, only to be told that they'd stop the drilling after 30 min and they wouldn't do any renovation the following day. Still no intention of moving me to a quieter room, despite my protest and obvious displeasure. Considering the price of this hotel, putting paying guests into a makeshift room that presumably used to be a shortage space is totally unacceptable. I stayed for 2 nights as the company had already paid for the booking. But unless they start getting their sh1t together, this particular hotel is a no-go for me. Quite a pity, as the staff in the restaurant were incredible and have shown more empathy with my experience than the hotel manager ever could.
Thanks Nkosi for a great stay at Sugar Hotel! You and your team were extremely helpful; authentic, genuine, and great customer service! You had loads of great local knowledge from restaurant reservations and tours, but what was particularly 'pro' was my last day, when I was an awkward customer and forgot to check out on time (!) but you handled me and the incoming customers like a pro, really excellent, classy service. Thank you! And sorry again :) In the mornings the breakfast team remembered my order, which made me smile and helped to start each day with lots of positive energy. This was really special too. It's the little details, done consistently well which means your customers will keep coming back to you. Thank you so much
What a wonderful room in a great location.. We have stayed all over the world in some great hotels but the staff here were perhaps the friendliest, most helpful of anywhere we have stayed.. Kudos to Nkosi, George, Peter and all the wait staff in the morning to all other employees. It was a pleasure to stay here and your assistance couldn't have been better
This Hotel was very comfortable and the staff were more than willing to help out and accomodate us. The breakfast was amazing, the best one we had on our three week vacation to Africa. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Within walking distance to the waterfront.
This is a great boutique style hotel. Location is good, rooms very roomy and comfortable, staff very friendly and helpful. WiFi worked well in the rooms. They were renovating the reception and kitchen areas at the time of our visit but managed to rearrange things well so it really didn't effect our stay. Being a boutique hotel it doesn't have all the facilities of a large hotel (eg. no gym) which we knew before we booked, but this is offset by its relaxed feel and very friendly and helpful staff. The only minor downside was that breakfast service was a bit slow, but this didn't really worry us too much as we enjoyed sitting on the external deck and once it arrived the food was very good and there was lots to choose from. Overall a very pleasant stay.
This is a beautiful hotel, with great food and knowledgeable friendly staff as well as stunning rooms and central location. There is also a lovely area to sit and watch the world go by- from an elevated position on Main road. I highly reccomend this hotel for your next Cape Town visit.
Staff are super friendly and helpful; chef is amazing; beds are huge and comfy. And the location is just perfect. Parking is not always easy, but they have an arrangement with the hotel next door which works fine. Try the Smashed Avo & Ciabatta for breakfast!
This place was so perfect for my visit to Cape Town. Great location for getting around - only a $3-5 cab ride anywhere within Cape Town. The staff was so friendly. The bathroom floors and towel rack are HEATED! Everything was PERFECT. So clean.
