Steigenberger Hotel Sanssouci4.0 out of 5.0

Only average for a Steigenberger hotel. Not luxurious although the travel card was very good and saved us a bit of money. Good location. Breakfast was fine without being special. Service in bar very poor one evening and prices in both bar and restaurant too high compared with other establishments nearby.
Staff very friendly and professional. Situation excellent for excursions. Possibility to use local transport free of charge makes moving from place to place very simple. Because of short of personal ? the dinner on Saturday night a bit delayed.
Overall this was a good hotel with excellent location. The staff were helpful, the buffet breakfast included a selction of freshly baked bread, a comfortable bar for a late night drink. We would stay here again.
We stayed at the Steigenberger Hotel Sanssouci in Potsdam on the recommendation of a receptionist at the Sanssouci Palace. We followed the recommendation because the hotel is close to the palace and park. That proximity is the only good thing about this hotel. The biggest problem with this hotel was the room rate. We paid 475.00 Euro for two nights. We had just spent five nights at the Ritz Carlton in Berlin where our room rate was about the same! The rate charged for the room was far above the value. They told us there was free parking but, in fact, parking was not free and there was limited space available in the parking garage attached to the hotel. The hotel sent us to a nearby public garage which turned out to be cheaper than that provided by the hotel. The room was marginal...hardly worthy of the room rate. The room was warm. Our second night staying, we needed to open the window for comfort sake. There was a group having a party in one of the yards adjacent to the hotel. These people were very loud and partied past midnight. I complained to the front desk twice at which time I asked if the room had air conditioning. The front desk lady laughed at me. To their credit, the front desk lady approached the noisy group and asked them for quiet. They refused...suggested she send me down to them where they would give me a glass of wine so I could relax. So we closed our window and endured the discomfort of the warm room because there was no air conditioning in this room that we paid 475.00 Euro for two nights.
The hotel location was in a handy location at the end of Brandenburgerstraße and not far from Sanssouci Park. The fre local transport for Potsdam and Berlin made it easy to use local transport which we could hop on and off. The breakfast was varied and had a good choice for hot / cold foods. The coffee machine in the room was also an added bonus. The staff were very friendly however I am still waiting for clarification as to why I have been doible charged for mu booking, hence the terrible rating given for value for money. The hotel rooms are being renovated in the next 12 months I believe.
The location is perfect for exploring the city centre. The staff was nice and helpful but lacks even the slightest attention to details. It was messy and sometimes dirty at the breakfast serving. The table cloth on our table was very worn, with holes in it, and should have been replaced many years ago. We could see from a distance it was the same at other tables. The chili plants decorating the tables had also passed best before date. One coffee cup in the room was chipped. For a hotel pretending to be of high standard, and charge accordingly, it is far from it.
Everything functioned very well. The service was very good. The hotel is located very well - close to a very nice square with maný different restaurants - and close to a nice main street with many different shops.
Overall excellent experience. The breakfast buffet is outstanding. The hotel has a perfect location to visit the city or to have an afternoon stroll in the Sanssouci park. Room had a good size, was clean and quiet.
We've booked two single rooms in this hotel to stay after Night in Postdam festival. For 200 euro per night (breakfast was not included) we've got small room without air conditioning, in the bathroom no samples have been provided, even toilet paper was half-used. Wifi worked only in one room, in the second one signal was very poor. The restaurant was ok, the terrace is very cute. Reception staff was friendly and nice. Location is excellent, just few steps from the park. In general it was nice hotel, but not for these money
The nearby church bell rings at 06.00am every morning. It rings over and over again for about 90 seconds. 120 rings in total (I counted them one morning). So, you're going to be wide awake at 6am, whether you've closed the window and accepted waking up in a really stuffy room (there is no other ventilation), or left them open to get some air (and consequently got eaten by mosquitoes in the night, as there's no insect screen on the window). So unless you want to be wide awake at 06.00 every morning, just completely avoid this particular area of Potsdam. Having said all that, the breakfast was the best I've had in a hotel (based on having breakfasted in between 50 and 100 hotels), the bed was comfy, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. This would have been a rating of 4 out of 5, if it wasn't for those wretched church bells.
