We have stayed at Viva Azteca and their sister hotel Viva Maya several times over the last 17 years. If you stay at the Azteca you can use the facilities at both hotels but if you stay at the Maya you can only use their facilities. The Maya is more family/kid friendly whereas the Azteca is more suited to adults. The Azteca is a little more expensive and has fewer rooms. I love the amenities! Our room was very clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. The buffet is very good and the specialty restaurants are fantastic. They fill up fast! The poolside grill offers pizza, hamburgers, fries, nachos, chips and guac, chicken wings, mini quesadillas and other finger foods. The bartenders are great and will remember you if you are polite and friendly. Tipping them helps a lot too! My only complaint about the hotel is the noise from other guests. The hallways echo very badly because everything is tile and concrete. You can hear people in the room next to yours, above and below. And I don't know why but the Europeans don't know how to whisper or speak quietly. We were awakened several times late into the night by them talking and laughing very loudly. And, our door had 1 centimeter gaps all the way around which also let in noise and light during the night.

We stayed 4 nights, highly recommend! -THE BEACH! Lots of chairs all day. (We were there off season). The water is a bit sandy.,not good for snorkeling as you can’t see any fish. -Food: there is the buffet and 4 restaurants. You make dinner reservations at the restaurants on the app or at front lobby. With the app we only got 1 spot for the 4 nights. So we went to the front lobby and learned that for 4 nights, the app only allows reservation. If they have openings, they make a reservation for you. We ate 3 nights which were delicious. The buffet is pretty good, lots of choices. There’s a coffee café with pastries, also a “snack bar” near the pool. There are self-serve machines for pina coladas & strawberry daiquiris, and rum bottles next to them to add. -Room: Nice, very clean, bed was comfortable which says a lot as I have a bad back. BUT you can’t control the temperature and it was pretty cold. We had to turn it on/off. There are water fountains in the hall to fill your water bottles. We had a small porch. -Activities:There's a team of staff that keeps things lively. Water sports are included. At night there is music at front lobby, but also a stage at the other end of the resort with shows, movies, etc each night. In the day there are scheduled activities. It's hard to get a chair by the pool. Across the street from resort is a small shopping area, Playa del Carmen is about 25 min walk. It’s very safe, there’s security gates and personnel entering hotel zone.

The beach was wonderful and always kept clean, the staff was always friendly- our infant loved seeing all of her new friends. The food options are good, obviously not 5 star but that's not what we came here for. We've come here about 4 times now and are always impressed. It's a comfortable resort with just enough. If you're looking for a fancy high class quiet place, this is not it. If you're looking for a comfortable, fun, family friendly place, then look no further.
