Fly to Zacatecas Airport

Zacatecas, in central Mexico, is a city that was founded on mining, particularly of silver, in Spanish colonial times.

Just outside the city, it's still possible to don a hardhat and take a train ride into one of the mineshafts; Mina El Eden. Inside you'll find a small museum, and tours further into the mine, on foot, are available. The main attraction for most people, however, is the old town. There are many awe-inspiring colonial cathedrals scattered across the country, and the pink-stone example that dominates the Plaza de Armas is one of the best.

The city is also packed with a range of museums, including an eclectic collection of global art at Museo Pedro Coronel, close to Plaza de Armas. Here you'll find works as diverse as West African masks, as well as pieces by European surrealists, including Dali.

Getting around

Direct flights to General Leobardo C. Ruiz International Airport (ZCL) are available from Chicago, Dallas, and LA, as well as Mexico City and Tijuana. The city is around 20 minutes south by road, and you can use taxis, buses, or car rental to travel towards the city.

Hints and tips

There are endless dining options; La Hacienda del Cobre, on calle Rosaleda, is a good choice for traditional dishes in a pleasant setting; but you'll find excellent food to suit every budget all over the city.
