Flights into Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL) land around 5 miles from the city center, but the journey into the city can take up to 45 minutes on the bus.
Berlin, Germany's capital city, has had a tumultuous history, and this shows in the city's diverse but vibrant patchwork of events, buildings and cultural collections.
Alexanderplatz was once the central square of East Berlin, and is now dominated by the Berlin TV Tower. From here, you can easily explore the central Mitte district. Stroll along the Unter den Linden Boulevard to the iconic Brandenburg Gate, and take in the exclusive stores on Friedrichstrase.
Here you'll also find the Reichstag building (the German government building) which is known as Berlin s most famous landmark and Museum Island, which can be found on the northern tip of Spree Island, is home to the Nefertiti and a wide variety of interesting exhibits from around the world.
To view what's left of the Berlin Wall, head to the East Side Gallery, on the banks of the Spree river. Over 100 murals are on the section of the wall which remains here. To understand the significance of what you're seeing, don't miss the Checkpoint Charlie Museum and the separate Berlin Wall Memorial.
