Located on the north-eastern coast, Tianjin was traditionally a major port city and it maintains this title as it has done for hundreds of years.

Its diverse history is reflected in its mix of ancient Chinese, colonial and 21st century buildings.
Sights

Must-sees for visitors include the Temple Of Great Compassion, a Zen Buddhist monastery that's thought to date back to the mid-1600's, and today serves vegetarian meals to visitors.

Ancient Culture Street known locally as Guwenhua Jie, revolves around Tianhou Palace, nearly 600 years old, and is packed with stores selling traditional crafts including calligraphy.

Food

Tianjin is a byword in China for great cuisine. The seafood is especially good here, but you might want to try a local speciality called Ear-Hole Fried Cake, a crunchy, sweet bun.

There are, however, thousands of options for dining in the city; Weishuwu Hot Pot is a very popular restaurant in Heping district, to name just one excellent restaurant.

Beats the hell out of flying any Chinese airline!

Apr 14, 2018

Actually a decent way to get the hell out of Tianjin. It is what it is. I wouldn’t call the business class ticket: “Business Class.” However, a direct flight to Bangkok from Tianjin was worth it, as the alternative would be a :-( Chinese :-( airline. Chinese and airline should never be in the same sentence. Also, immigration at Bangkok DMK is a slow and laborious process as compared to BKK. I was in line with half of Asia for more than 90 minutes with no “fast track” option with biz class or even with the Thailand Privileged Entry (resident) visa. All-in-all, as a business traveler, I don’t believe I will repeat the flight, despite the decent and friendly service aboard. Caveat emptor.
