Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is considered the gateway to the south of India and flights to Chennai International Airport (MAA) give all visitors the chance to see another side to India. Flights into Chennai International Airport (MAA) land approximately 7 miles from the city center. The cheapest way to get from the airport to the city is by train. Alternatively, take a prepaid taxi.
Tamil culture is very strong here, and it's a vibrant city, known for its dance, traditional arts, temples and extensive beaches.
Georgetown is the oldest part of Chennai, and bustles with markets and life. The 8th century Kapaleeswarar Temple is close to the city center, and worth a visit, as is the majestic Sri Ramakrishna Math Universal Temple - note, however, that non-Hindus may not be admitted to some temple areas.
The Government Museum and the National Art Gallery both house impressive collections and should be on your to-see list. On the outskirts of the city, the Arinjar Anna Zoological Park is a popular destination, especially with families.

Marina Beach, Covelong, Breezy Beach and Edward Elliot's Beach each have their own characters, but all offer respite from the Chennai heat. Swimming is not advised due to strong currents, however, and swimwear should not be worn.
