Fly to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport
Modern Hyderabad is something of a concrete jungle, and one of India's most important IT centers. Many flights into the region are packed with business people, but for those who care to look, old Hyderabad has plenty of history worth exploring.
Most of the old city lies on the south bank of the river Musi. Here you'll find the beautiful Charminar, with its four minarets, as well as Mecca Masjid, royal palaces and Golconda Fort. Don't miss the sound and light show at dusk which explains the fort's history, and make time to visit the jumble of surrounding streets and interesting shops.
Getting around
Once your flight arrives at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) take one of the well run, air-conditioned buses directly from the airport. You'll have a choice of drop off points in the city, and the buses run every 30 minutes or so.
Hints and tips
One of the best museums to visit in the city is the Salar Jung, which showcases the private collections of Prime Ministers. Another good way to explore the city, in the cool of the early morning, is to join one of the organized heritage walks which leave at 7am from the Charminar each weekend.
