Perched over a mile above sea level, and less than 70 miles north of Aspen CO by car, Eagle County is a great choice for skiers. It's close to Vail and gives visitors from several major cities a convenient option for visiting the Rockies at any time of year.
Vail Mountain Resort is around half an hour by car, due east of the airport, and is hugely popular with skiers in winter, and mountain bikers in the warmer months. Hikers and horseback riders are also well catered for.
Beaver Creek is slightly closer; the ski runs, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1976, form part of the White River National Forest.
Direct flights to Eagle Creek Airport (EGE) during the ski season include Denver, LA, Toronto, Chicago and many more. In summer, there are daily services to Dallas and Houston as well as Denver. If you'd rather enjoy the incredible scenery of the Rockies by car, the airport has a wide selection of major rental firms.
Most of the accommodation nearby is around Vail, where you'll also find a wide selection of good quality restaurants. Westside Cafe & Market has classic American and Tex-Mex dishes, while The Little Diner (616 West Lionshead) offers hearty breakfasts and lunches at reasonable prices.
