Edinburgh is a wonderful historic city to visit to see some incredible period architecture and experience welcoming locals and great entertainment. When you fly into Edinburgh Airport (EDI), you ll find that Edinburgh city center is comprised of two areas, the Old Town and the New Town, and walking down Princes Street, the main drag, you have incredible shopping on one side, and spectacular views of the old castle on the other.
In the Old Town, visitors can take a tour of the famous Edinburgh Castle, spook themselves in the Edinburgh Dungeons, and feel like royalty visiting the Palace of Holyrood House. Also popular is a hike up an extinct volcano, known as Arthur's Seat, for some amazing views over the city.
There are lots of good restaurants, but some of the best atmosphere can be found in local pubs, serving up pints of beer alongside traditional Scottish "haggis and tatties".
For shopping, there are plenty of upmarket designer stores mixed with traditional Scottish stores selling local crafts and plenty of tartan!
When you fly to Edinburgh Airport (EDI), there is excellent ground transportation, with frequent bus and tram services to downtown. If you are renting a car, the journey to downtown is about 8 miles. The city itself is quite compact, so exploring by foot is definitely an option.
