East of Martha's Vineyard and south of Cape Cod, lies Nantucket Island, a haven for lovers of seafood and unspoiled beaches. Direct flights to Nantucket Airport (ACK) are readily available from Boston, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard and New Bedford. The airport is less than 10 minutes by road from the harbor.
Two of the best beaches are at Madaket, in the west of the island, and Surfside to the south. Madaket is a very popular beach and it has ample parking, lifeguards on duty and lots of restrooms for your convenience.
Surfside is an incredibly popular beach with people of all ages and it s just perfect for kite flying, picnics, sunbathing and surfcasting.
The beaches to the north of the island are mostly protected from the Atlantic swells, and generally better for young kids.
Every visitor to Nantucket should pay a visit to the Nantucket Whaling Museum, which includes a complete sperm whale skeleton that measures an impressive 46-feet. The museum is dedicated to the history of whaling in the region and it also has an observation deck with great views over the harbor.
The exhibition also includes examples of scrimshaw - engraved pieces of bone, some very elaborate, created by sailors and often depicting whaling scenes.
