Nice hotel

Hotel with large spacious rooms, we were on b+b basis and found the breakfast to be good with plenty of choice, Due to poor weather conditions we were unable to use the outdoor pool and sun bathing facilities but all looked lovely.

Good holiday, but could do with some TLC.

Never been to Madeira before, decided to give it a try. This place was nice and central to where we wanted to go, and as it turned out, a pleasant spot. I had booked mountain view room, but what we got was a huge room (Room 218), above the entrance area, with 2 small windows at the side of the room, overlooking the entrance steps, and a frosted glass partition above reception itself. The view was not good, the room a bit dark. We did try for an upgrade but the place was fully booked. As it happens, we were hardly in there apart from sleeping so it wasn't too big an issue in the end. Comfortable enough, with large patio areas and sea views at the back where all the balconies were situated. The patios were on multiple layers down to the sea with plenty of loungers etc. However, the areas themselves were looking shabby, rusted guard rails, stained and worn loungers, the place needs a face lift. There was a gym, quite well equipped, and saunas and jacuzzi with pools. Breakfast was self service and plentiful, although it did get crowded and the food toward the end of the week bland. Plenty of bars nearby, some excellent eating. There is also a free shuttle bus to Funchal, but you must book to get a place. This place was a 5 star RCI resort, but no longer. Still well worth a visit and I would return.

Large apartment very clean .in a lovely location. Had breakfast in the Rocomor hotel which the royal orchids has a corridor leading to as they had building works. Which was outside and overlooked the bay . Only stayed one night .but would go back. Very small pool though

Lovely Hotel next to the Sea in quiet location.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Easy access using Hotel or Public Bus and Taxi to Funchal. Book a Minibus trip at reception, Nun's Valley trip was great, lots of places to visit and things to do, Cable Car trip to Monte Palace Gardens, Catamaran Dolphin spotting, Aqua Park nearby etc etc. Some great restaurants within walking distance near the Spar shop and lovely lady with souvenir shop, carry on along the coast to Reis Magos for a swim in the sea.

Nice hotel, very UNfriendly, UNwelcoming staff

Before our stay I sent a request to the hotel through their own website requesting a room on a higher floor. I never received a reply. Upon arrival we were told that we got a FREE room upgrade so we were pleased that they must have acknowledged our prev. e-mail then. Only to find out that we actually got the exact room above the pool & gym area (which is exactly what we wanted to avoid!). We politely went to the reception & requested a new room, where we were told that the hotel is full, we cant move. Funny enough, as we checked out & waited for our shuttle bus in the lobby, another couple got the same hotel and I happened to hear that they want to move room as that room is quite noisy (pool below & gym w screaming music till 22.00). The hotel & the room was clean, the food was reasonable. The location is not great, unless you rent a car to get around. All in all, I expected much better service in general.

Great Two Weeks

We have been to canicio before in a different hotel, which is now part of the same group as the Royal Orchid. Nice room and very helpful staff. Lots of restaurants nearby, particularly Lee Hamilton Steak House for very good food,a spectacular view and very good prices.

Good hotel at excellent location

The hotel is reasonably good, albeit it is indeed a 3 star (not 4 star) hotel, and that is what you are paying for as well. Positives * Excellent location right by the sea with spectacular views from pretty much all rooms * Easy access to Funchal and airport (although no disturbance of aircraft noise) * Rooms are clean, spacious and reasonably modern * Good pool area outdoors as well as the indoor pool, saunas, jacuzzi and relaxation area * Excellent gym facilities * Clean rooms * Good size safety deposit box Areas for improvement * Single biggest issue is the comfort of the beds, they all seem to have really hard matresses * Provide new fluffier pillows * The shower cubicle in the bathroom is really basic * A paint work is needed at the back of the hotel (not that visable though) Overall, if you have no issues with hard matresses and can overlook the paintwork recquirement (the latter didn't bother us), then this is a good value hotel and can certainly be recommended.

This hotel was located in a mostly german speaking area. The hotel smelt quite strongly of chlorine in the entrance lobby , no douby because of the proximity of the indoor pool. The staff were friendly enough but it felt like a corporate hotel used by tour groups and had no atmosphere to speak of.

The hotel needs a refurbishment and repairs not just a lick of paint, we had cockroaches in the bathroom. the food was quite nice over the two weeks. The gym has very good facility's and the staff were very good. 3 star not 4.

Hotel Royal Orchid Madeira

My husband & I spent 2 weeks at HRO and we both would highly recommend it. The hotel is clean and staffed with very helpful employees at the front desk. The breakfast buffet was excellent. A wide range of food choices including rolls, eggs, fruits, yogurt, cereal, bacon/sausage, nut breads, potato puffs, sliced ham & cheese, as well as champagne on Sunday. HRO is located in a beautiful area within walking distance of several restaurants/cafes. There is also an ATM and a bus stop very near. In addition, the hotel has a courtesy bus which will drop you off and pick you up in Funchal at no charge. Entertainment was provided almost every night at HRO or the neighboring sister hotel, Rocomar. The bird show in particular was worth seeing. The hotel will arrange tours, taxis and rental cars so you can experience the entire island or you can spend your days lazily on one of the many oceanfront decks. We saw families and couples of all ages. HRO is suitable for all. The only disappointment was the bed which was 2 single matresses made up separately but pushed together. You had to be careful not to move toward the middle of the bed or a gap would open. The only other thing was that the exterior could use some touch up paint in a few areas. However, there was painting going on from time to time during our stay. All in all, HRO is a great value and we would not hesitate to stay there again.

Fabulous quiet location Easy bus or shuttle into transport into Funchal. Good local restaurants. Staff excellent, breakfast was fresh and varied. We did not have dinner. Rooms spacious and clean, however very tired and in need of new furniture and fittings. Beds extremely hard. Overall a lovely stay but 3 star not 4.

Hotellet ligger fint vid havet med fint utsikt. Rymligt hotellrum och ok badrum. Servicen når inte upp till förväntningarna. Receptionen är inte intresserade av att hjälpa till med information. Maten på hotellet får 1 av 5 möjliga, vad ni är ni gör akta er för nyårsmeny. Gymmet är slitet och man känner sig inte välkommen där. Rummet var väldigt lyhört. Vi kommer inte att boka om detta hotell fast att vistelsen på Madeira var för övrigt fantastiskt.

Die Nähe zur Tauchbasis und die Sauberkeit in den Zimmern... allerdings ist es in den Zimmern immer etwas feucht/klamm... es würde auch mal nicht schaden über den Notausgang-Tafeln die Spinnweben zu entfernen... ;-)
