Hotel was tired and having stayed at several other places in CR, Shana felt an ordinary place to stay for the price we paid. We had a couple of issues with our room as well which was problematic. Manuel Antonio as a place to explore? absolutely amazing, beautiful beaches and parks with Sloths just hanging out in the trees - simply amazing.

It is in a good location; walking distance with a private path to the beach. The breakfast was bland. The room we stayed at was big but the floor was super dirty.

Horrible hotel-bat in room-Unsafe stay

We were moved between two rooms within one night and both were unsafe. The first room had leaking pipes in the wall, dripping AC, loose electrical wires in bathroom, smelled like mold and was quite literally falling apart (parts of cabinets on the floor!). The second room had a large hole we found behind our daughters bed where a bat flew out and kept swooping at us our first (and only!) night there. We had to terminate our stay and drive all the way back to San Jose (ruining our vacation and paying for new flights) for our Daughter to get the health department required rabies vaccines (totalling $1700US and requiring 4 trips to the ER). The hotel owner took a full week to reply to us and only offered us a refund of half so we have filed a dispute with our credit card company. They photographed us in our car as we left (trying to prove we stayed one night) even though we never slept a wink. The only reason we had to stay was because we didn’t feel safe driving all the way to the airport (hours) during the night and no manager would be available to speak to us until 6:30am. This hotel has quite literally caused us thousands of dollars of damage and, yet, they are fighting for money for nights we were not even able to enjoy. They ruined our long awaited vacation and in no way made us feel any of the Pura Vida we had come to love about Costa Rica. They should be ashamed.
Pipe leaking behind the wall upon entry
Water pours out of the wall when the shower is on. This is the other side of the wall pictured above.)
AC dropped all over our opened luggage. Whole room smelled of mold.
Look at this set up-nothing like the room pictured online that we paid $350/night for. It’s falling apart.

This property is built into a steep hill overlooking the ocean. It is beautiful - a bit difficult to navigate getting in and out with your vehicle, but very doable. The pool area and restaurant are absolutely beautiful. The breakfast provided is amazing and if you go early (between 6 and 7) you will see the white faced monkeys trying to partake in the breakfast as well - haha! The pool has a great bar with some wonderful drinks. The mistake we made was getting there on a Monday evening not realizing the Manuel Antonio is closed on Tuesdays. You can go to the beach and shops around the park, just not go into the park on Tuesday. We did come back and enjoyed it on our last day and it is a flatter well manicured park with fantastic beaches inside the park - it is flat enough that you can tour with sandals instead of hiking shoes. If you can buy your tickets to the park online ahead of time, then you can avoid those people trying to make you pull over if you are driving to the park. There is a parking lot very close to the park and we had to just make up stories to get those people to stop bugging us about pulling over and parking. In the end we did get a space in the very close official lot and a great tour guide. The staff was very attentive and helpful with everything - however, we felt that the area that you book tours was not well organized and they didn't really help us with the questions we asked. We just embarked on our own and had a great time anyway!

Shana by the Ocean was not a pleasant experience. It's kind of like an a cheesy all inclusive, without including anything but breakfast (which you would get anywhere in Costa Rica). Management is not helpful, if you have any problems with your room, you will suffer. Stay at a cute boutique hotel, you will save money AND have a better experience! We loved our other 3 hotels in Costa Rica, they were perfect!

Overall, the area and view the hotel has is a 4/5. Most of the staff was friendly and has great customer service however, that was not the case with some of the waitresses in the restuarant. Nothing in this road is walkable due to narrow roads w/o sidewalks. Most of the tours provide transportation to and from.

1. The room was smelling of MOLD, we could not sleep, had allergic response - sneezing, itching and headache , tried turning the air condition "on" and "off", turning it on made it worse. I could not believe that a top rated hotel would be this bad. 2. The hotel says it has private access to the beach. While it was true, the access to the beach was very difficult and there was knee deep water heading to the beach shore. I Would rather spend my money on a hotel away from the beach and take a taxi to the beach. 3. Provided feedback to the hotel staff at check out. they didn't seem to take it seriously. 4. Breakfast was very good.

Shana is not worth the price nor is it a 4 star hotel. The property is in an inconvenient location with no nearby restaurants or shops. Next, its breakfast buffet was no better than what you would get at a good motel. The rooms were dated, and not well maintained. Also, if you’re in one of lower room numbers, you have to walk up a very steep hill to get to the pool or reception desk. The best part was the pool. Great water temperature and excellent pool bar. We won’t choose this hotel again. .

Shana is definitely better than the other hotel we stayed at. The playa biseanz is a wonderful beach with iguana’s and crab’s and clear water. We got a Royal jungle view with private pool - I would say the room and the bathroom were amazing but the private is outside and not connected to your room. We had to call front desk every time to turn the pool on and the lights didn't work which becomes dark to swim after sunset. The breakfast was amazing and all the facilities were provided. Overall I would say Shana is a top-class hotel and it is worth the price to stay.
