Our host John was so kind and helpful about what to see while we’re there and restaurant recommendations. Our spacious and immaculate accommodations had a separate sitting room with complimentary drinks and snacks. The king sized bed had beautiful and comfortable linens. The bathroom was large and luxurious. The complimentary breakfast each morning was delicious and served in a pretty dining room with beautiful views of the property. We enjoyed our time in Orkney and staying at John’s place really added to our wonderful experience there. We highly recommend staying here!
Graemeshall house is an extraordinary place. The detail, history, comfort, breakfast quality are exceptional. The innkeeper is a terrific resource for exploring Orkney, has some terrific stories about the property, and is a really nice guy too.
We will be back.
We had an exceptional stay at Graemshall House. We had a suite that was beautiful, comfortable and cozy. The bed was very comfortable. The space included a small refrigerator and a lot of little extras like dainty little brownies. The bathroom had a lovely claw foot tub by a window overlooking the sea. It was so peaceful and the view was breathtaking. The host went out of his way to help us including helping us with a flat tire. The breakfast was delicious with a good variety of options to choose from. The only drawback is that the B&B is near the far end of the island from Stromness, but in our opinion, it is very much worth the drive.
Lovely historic home. Made very welcome by our hosts. The house is rural but close to a bus stop with buses to kirkwall which made it easy to pick up a rental car to tour the islands. Highly recommended.
Our host went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and at home. He had so much knowledge of the house and the area, you can definitely tell he is passionate about what he does and the history behind it all. Breakfast was phenomenal and the room was goregous with a great view. He definitely made us feel like royalty!
John the host was very accommodating. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully served in the gracious dining hall of this stately home. The most comfortable mattress we have had on a long journey. The secluded park setting was restful.
It was wonderful. Neither my fiancée nor myself wanted to leave. The piece and quiet was wonderful. The breakfasts were wonderful as was our room. I cannot praise this hotel sufficiently. Whilst the hotel does not do evening meals there are plenty of plaves to eat elsewhere. My hope is that my fiancée and I will return as husband and wife. Certainly a five star rst and and recuperation location.
Absolutely amazing! The room was beautiful, comfortable and absolutely immaculate. Every detail had been thought of. Our host, John, made us feel very welcome. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the house (which is beautiful), and the breakfast was delicious. The peace and quiet was divine and the location is very convenient for getting everywhere. We were thoroughly spoiled! Will definitely be back!
This bed & breakfast is absolutely fantastic! The house, steeped in history, dates back to the 16th century. The Queen Mother visited the house for tea back in the 50's. It was an absolute privilege to have stayed there. John & Trish, the owners, are superb hosts, they could not have done anymore to ensure our stay was perfect. Ask John about the house & he'll love to tell you all about its history & its importance to Orkney. Room was very clean as was all the facilities. Breakfast was exceptional. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Certainly stay here again when we return to Orkney.
Situated further out from everything and hard for us to find . The entrance was a little spare and echoey with no carpet and darkened floor boards . We were taken to the ‘library’ to check in which for us felt quite uncomfortable and less welcoming given a history of the fireplace isn’t really what tired travellers need to know .
The ‘library’ would be better served as a community sitting room with tables and chairs rather than 2 Chesterfield couches facing each other in a quiet cold unwelcoming room.
We felt we were to stay in our room or go out as the hosts live downstairs- sorry as the host was lovely but we really felt in the way as guests.
The breakfast was impeccable and the presentation was 10/10 .
I think if it was ‘welcoming’ from the beginning and given a purpose of the library for the guests rather than a showpiece for the host
A superb restoration of a grand historic Scottish home. Comfortable rooms with many amenities. Expertly prepared breakfasts. Warm, friendly host who is willing to help with restaurant reservations and other details. We stayed 7 nights. Made our visit to Orkney a beautiful memory.
Good location at Churchill Barriers. Property is older and could use some updating. The host, John, couldn’t do enough for us. Even provided a plate of pastries when he found out we’d be leaving before breakfast. Thanks for the terrific hospitality
neat place to stay, wonderful old house, lots of history, the owners were very friendly and inviting, room was large, bed comfortable and nice bathroom
A lovely restoration of a 1626 manor home. Just getting started the owners are most pleasant and accommodating. We very much enjoyed our stay.
There was a booking problem that was solely caused by Expedia. The owners went out of their way to fix it. Suggest always confirming direct with propert.
We were on a mission to deliver my father's photo archive of his work during WW2 as a Supervising Construction Engineer on the Churchill Barriers project. Patricia and John set up meetings with a local preservationist and an interview with the local "Orcadian" newspaper, which they fit into our very limited time before we handed the album over to the Orkney Library and Archives right before we left. Their enthusiasm and sincere interest in what was for me the pilgrimage of a lifetime will stay with me.
