Pack your skis or board, fill your tank, grab your warmest coat and gear, and hit the road for an epic winter road trip that includes some of the country’s best ski resorts. And don’t worry, we’ve already got the accommodations all figured out.

Trip 1: Shredding the Sierra Nevada

If you’re road tripping throughout the American West, you most likely won’t have to worry about road conditions in between mountain towns. So put on your favorite tunes, take in the scenery and enjoy the ride. (Total driving time between destinations is 5 hrs.)

Mammoth Mountain, CA

With the highest summit in California at 11,053 feet, and 150 runs, Mammoth is a favorite for Golden Staters. Whether you’re a beginner or want to ski some chutes, Mammoth Mountain typically has the longest season and averages 30 feet of snow annually.

STAY Located in Mammoth Village with easy access to the Gondola, the Westin Monache Resort offers upscale accommodations that are also Fido friendly.

Heavenly Ski Resort, located in Lake Tahoe, has everything from back country terrain to wide open runs with 3,500 vertical feet, and two terrain parks. Ski or board 4,800 acres both in California and Nevada.

STAY After hitting the slopes all day, check in to Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Hotel & Casino on the Nevada side for some fun nighttime activities. With eight restaurants, 825 slot machines, an indoor pool, and a spa, you’ll have just as much fun off the slopes.

Home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley Ski Resort has world-class terrain that includes chutes, bowls and bunny hills. Take the Aerial Tram to the top to get a scenic view of the Lake Tahoe area. End your day with dining and shopping at The Village.

Trip 2: Roadtripping the Rockies

Enjoy a multitude of winter activities at Grand Targhee Resort, ranging from downhill, cross-country and cat skiing and boarding to snowshoeing and fat biking. If that’s not enough, check out the roaming buffalo at nearby Grand Teton National Park.

STAY Enjoy ski in/ski out accommodation at the Targhee Lodge, located at the base of the mountain. As part of the Grand Targhee Resort, the Lodge is conveniently located near shops and restaurants.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, WY

Take a chairlift, gondola or tram to ski or board steep and deep terrain at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. About 50% of the runs are for “experts,” including the legendary chute, “Corbet’s Couloir.” The resort also offers heli-skiing, snowmobiling and sleigh rides.

STAY The beautiful modern but rustic Snow King Resort is just blocks from downtown and a short drive to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park. The resort offers hotel or luxury condo accommodation.

At Big Sky Resort, you’ll be skiing under a big sky on a big mountain, with 5,850 skiable acres, including the six-mile long Liberty Bowl to Mountain Village run. Other activities include zip lining, dogsledding, and Sno-Go downhill bikes (a bike with skis!).

STAY Lone Mountain Ranch, one of the Unique Lodges of the World, offers historic cozy cabins with luxury amenities located near Yellowstone National Park. Enjoy farm-to-table cuisine, sleigh rides, Nordic skiing, winter fly fishing and a ranch hand concierge.

Trip 3: Exploring Appalachian slopes

If you live in the East, you may already know the largest ski resorts can be found in the Appalachian Mountains. The range runs through 13 states and boasts approximately 176 ski resorts. (Total driving time between destinations is 8 hrs.)

Located in the Western Mountains of Maine, Sugarloaf has 1,240 acres of terrain suitable for activities such as skiing, riding, fat biking, Sno-Go skibiking, snow shoeing, dog sledding and ice skating. If that’s not enough, the surrounding “Side Country” offers another 650 acres of glades. Need a break from the cold? Check out the indoor skate park.

STAY For charming, on-mountain accommodation, the Sugarloaf Inn is popular with locals and visitors. Rooms include slope-side ski lockers for easy access. For craft beers and food to fuel you in between runs, dine at the Inn’s Shipyard Brew Haus where you can sink your teeth into a burger, pizza, sandwiches and more.

Bretton Woods, NH

Bretton Woods is New Hampshire’s largest ski area and offers Alpine skiing and boarding, as well as a range of other winter activities. Check out the sleigh and carriage rides, snowmobile park, tubing, slope side climbing wall, canopy tours and ice climbing.

STAY Enjoy luxury accommodations at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. This 200-room hotel has delighted notable guests and locals alike. The opulent décor, fine dining, full-service spa, heated indoor pool and direct access to the ski resort makes it the perfect place for a winter escape.

Killington Ski Resort, VT

With seven mountain areas and 212 runs, you’re sure to find some downhilling that everyone will enjoy. Looking for a little R&R off the slopes? Head to the Killington Grand Spa for some serious pampering.

STAY Sleep on the mountain at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel, which includes amenities such as dining, health club, ski check, game room and a heated outdoor pool and hot tubs.

Whiteface Mountain, NY

As part of the Lake Placid Olympic Sites, Whiteface Mountain has all the thrills and amenities you could want. Experts will enjoy The Slides, 35 acres of in-bounds, off-piste, double-black-diamond backcountry skiing. There are also six terrain parks for every ability level. Uphill passes are available for those who want to get on the mountain before the lifts open. Off the slopes, check out the Lake Placid Olympic Museum or join an Olympic History Tour.

STAY Sleep in rustic luxury at The Whiteface Lodge, located in the scenic Adirondacks’ High Peaks region.
