Many a blog’s been buzzing lately about the new basic economy fares now being offered by American, United, Delta and other airlines. At best, they’re presented as a way for thrifty travelers to save a few bucks. At worst, they’re seen as a new low in airlines’ “calculated misery” game.

But is basic economy really that bad? While you could save $10–$40, some basic fares don’t let you use the overhead bin space, change your ticket or choose your seat (the latter of which could make the basic fares a poor choice for family travel). If you do come across one when booking on Orbitz.com, be sure to check the terms and restrictions, which differ from airline to airline.

In the meantime, to better determine whether the new fares are a good fit for you, the business travel experts at Egencia came up with the chart below. It offers a quick look at the features and restrictions of basic fares across three major airlines to help travelers decide for themselves.
