While Tokyo makes it onto just about everybody’s Japan itinerary, the city of Kyoto has its own charms, with its beauty, culture, and so much to see and do. Keep reading for 10 reasons to love Kyoto.

1. Breathtaking temples and shrines

Kinkaku-ji Temple

Since it’s known to be a cultural hub of Japan, Kyoto is full of temples and shrines. It’s also a location with some of the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A visit to the Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, will leave you breathless. The gorgeous Ginkakuji, or Silver Pavilion, is another impressive temple.

When you visit Kyoto, you’ll appreciate the beauty that can be found everywhere. In the Arashiyama district of Kyoto, for example, you’ll find a breathtaking bamboo forest where you can spend your afternoon surrounded by nature. It’s also recommended that you take a walk along the gorgeous Philosopher’s Walk. Along the way, you’ll pass several temples and shrines, and the walk itself is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season.

3. Matcha, matcha, matcha

Matcha, or finely powdered green tea, is commonly found throughout Japan—especially in Kyoto. Here you can enjoy many variations of drinks and desserts that feature this ingredient. What kind of delicious treats can be found? Matcha partfaits, matcha ice cream, and even matcha cake! If you’re looking for a more traditional tasting experience, you can drink hot green tea at most temples.

4. Rejuvenating hot springs

While in beautiful Kyoto, why not give your body some extra TLC? Japan is known for its many hot springs, also called onsen. The best part is many offer an open-air experience with breathtaking views. This is the perfect way to experience the onsen culture while taking in the beauty of Kyoto.

5. Delicious Street Food at Nishiki Market

If you’re into trying new foods while traveling, you’ll love Nishiki Market. Here you’ll find souvenir shops, cafes, fruits and vegetables, and a variety of street food ready for your sampling. Ramen, quail eggs and sashimi are some of the must-try food items here.

6. Rich history and culture

If you love learning about new places and the history and culture behind them, you’ll love Kyoto. Be sure to spend some time in the Gion district of the city, were you can take in the traditional architecture, see a performance, and even see geisha girls as they often work dinner parties and events in the area.

7. Many peaceful spots to relax

There are many peaceful spots located throughout Kyoto that offer the perfect opportunity to unwind and relax. Garden areas can be found throughout this part of Japan, with many located in or around temples and shrines. The Heian Shrine, which is featured in the movie Lost in Translation, features the gorgeous Shinen Garden, which is definitely worth a visit. Kyoto’s most peaceful locations give you the chance to let go of everyday stresses.

8. A kaiseki dinner experience

While in Kyoto, kaiseki cuisine is a must try. Kaiseki is a carefully prepared multi-course meal using fresh ingredients that are in season. These special meals are not only delicious, but their presentation often makes them look more artful than edible. While these meals are quite expensive, it’s worth the unique experience.

If you plan to spend time in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto, you’ll enjoy the beautiful bamboo park. In addition, the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is located here. As you climb the mountain, which is about a 15-20 minute hike, you’ll start to see the adorable Japanese macaque monkeys, also known as snow monkeys. It’s a fun experience watching the monkeys swing around, play with each other and eat. If you’re an animal lover, this is a must-see spot.

10. It’s near other locations

Osaka

Kyoto is located in Western Japan, and is in close proximity to other cities including Osaka and Nara. Many travelers choose to visit Osaka when they have a trip planned to Kyoto. You can visit by bullet train and be there in about 15 minutes, or consider taking a slower train, which varies in time from 30-60 minutes depending on train type and route. This is a great way to see even more of Japan.

Once you step foot in this gorgeous destination, you’ll realize there are infinite reasons to love it.
