Cable Car

Quite honestly, there’s nothing like the view from up high. When you’re looking to scope out the scenery from above, funiculars—like these—get you where you want to be.

Hong Kong’s storied The Peak Tram ascends Victoria Peak as it has for 125 years—up 1,300 feet for jaw-dropping views of the city’s glittering, ultra-vertical skyline. When you reach the top, you’ll encounter shops, restaurants and bars—not to mention, postcard-worthy vistas at every turn.

In Malaysia, the gondola dubbed Genting Skyway quickly whisks you 6,650 feet above sea level to the Genting Highlands Resort, a mecca where shopping, gambling, theme parks and a hotel reside. En route, views of lush hillsides dotted with animal carvings await.

Head to Switzerland and board the car at Grindelwald-Männlichen Cableway, which connects Grindelwald-Grund at 3,094 feet with Männlichen at 7,316 feet in the Swiss Alps. During the 30-minute ride, take in views of the jagged Jungfrau and Eiger Mountains as well as the plummeting valleys below.

Although it’s highly subjectto weather conditions, when the climate cooperates little beats being aboard the Table Mountain Cableway in Cape Town, South Africa. Its floor rotates 360 degrees, offering stunning views of iconic Table Mountain. Upon arrival, take in the breathtaking scenery, or plan a picnic in advance.

When in Spain, though, don’t miss a trip to Picos de Europa National Park, where the cableway takes you more than 6,000 feet above the Picos’ wood valleys to Aliva for views and umpteen hiking opportunities.
