Vacation without the kids: Start with a romantic stroll by Disney's BoardWalk Inn.

By Jill E. Cooper

Renowned for its theme parks and family fun, Walt Disney Resort might be one of the last places that come to mind for a romantic getaway. But it’d be a mistake to write off Disney as a spot to reconnect with your partner. It is, after all, one of the world’s most popular honeymoon destinations.

Go there to rev up the romance – and please, for once, leave the kids at home.

Two of the most enchanting resorts are located between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  These luxurious deluxe properties conjure the elegance of a century-old yacht club in Martha’s Vineyard and the fun and fanciful boardwalk of 1940s Atlantic City.  Less than a 10-minute walk from Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Disney’s Beach Club Villas and Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, find an abundance of romantic restaurants whereyou and your sweetheart can dine as the sun sets.

A personal favorite: the San Angel Inn located in the Mexican pavilion.  Here, inside the towering Aztec temple of Quetzalcoatl, feast on authentic Mexican eats under the stars of old Mexico while Mariachi music woos in the background.  Meanwhile, dramatic views of a nearby volcano, the vibrancy of the pavilion’s marketplace and the tranquility of passing boats pours on the ambiance.

Book a fireworks cruise for two for a close-up view of Disney's IllumiNations.

After dinner, amble slowly along the walkways of World Showcase – glasses of champagne from Les Vins des Chefs de France in hand — as you find the perfect viewing spot to marvel at Epcot’s thrilling fireworks spectacular, IllumiNations.  Alternately, you could book the ultimate in romance, a fireworks cruise for two from which you can enjoy this inspiring pyrotechnic display. Finish the night with a stroll past beautiful Crescent Lake, and wonder why you two didn’t take this vacation sooner.
