We stayed one night at the Waterton Lakes Lodge Resort, but had to check in at the Kilmorey Lodge. When we first arrived, we found a big bug on the ground in our room. We didn’t think too much of it at first since it’s a mountain area, but around 1 a.m., I got up to use the washroom and found another huge bug crawling on my bed. That was unsettling — all I could think about was how I might’ve been sleeping with bugs without realizing it.
The next morning, we went to the Kilmorey Lodge to talk to the staff. The older woman there, who seemed to be the manager, brushed it off, saying things like “This is a national park” and “You passed the gates — expect there to be bugs.” I was honestly shocked. I understand it’s a national park, but that doesn’t mean there should be bugs in the bed of a hotel room.
After some discussion, they said they’d give us a 10% discount, but since we booked through Expedia, that couldn’t be applied. Instead, they offered a free breakfast at their restaurant. The breakfast was actually very good — big portions and a nice atmosphere — but the maple syrup smelled and tasted strongly like dish soap, so we couldn’t use it.
Overall, the setting was beautiful and the breakfast was good, but the bug issue and the way the situation was handled really took away from what could’ve been a nice stay.
