I decided to call in here for a break but found it to be an unwelcoming place. One staff member was avoiding serving anyone and the other was being obsequious to some patrons whilst airily ignoring others. It was trying too hard to be trendy and although I wanted a coffee to sit outside with, it was not going to happen.
We were a group of 6 and rented 3 rooms and enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the Rose and Crown. The service and hospitality were outstanding. The rooms were great, especially the spacious and modern bathroom. Dinner was outstanding. Everyone in our group raves about how good everything was, including the very friendly staff. I highly recommend the Rose and Crown.
We have just returned from a couple of nights away staying at the Rose and Crown. What a fantastic venue for a weekend break. The room was well furnished if a little quirky on the top floor overlooking the market square, with a scrumptious breakfast of quality local produce, exactly what we wanted before our days walking around the town and doing the tourist visits to the castle and local sights. We had a couple of lovely evening meals, one at Catalan restaurant and the other a Sunday lunch at a beautiful riverside gastro pub just out of town. Evenings were spent relaxing in the local hostalries which were welcoming and friendly, we can especially recommend the Ironworks for a memorable night of beers, cocktails and banter 👍😉 Many thanks to Katie and the whole of the staff at the Rose and Crown who helped us in having such a memorable weekend.
Booked this place for husband’s 40th birthday as reviews seemed good. As there were going to be a few of us, they offered us a private dining room, but this turned out to be absolutely freezing and really felt out of the way and it would have been nicer to have been in with others for a bit more atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, but there were a few things with the food which were disappointing. We opted for roast lunches, which we had prebooked and so they came out nice and quick. Meat was cooked well, gravy was nice, but the Yorkshire’s were a bit over done and the accompanying veg was just leeks...normally you might have broccoli, cauliflower or a few others. A bit strange just having leeks. We chose deserts, and unfortunately they had run out of the cheesecake. Opted for the sticky toffee pudding, but these all came out old and hard. They apologised and brought them back hotter, although they still didn’t taste great. They did remove these from the bill, which was very generous, but it did kill the birthday buzz a little.
Possibly the worst nights sleep Ive ever had. To avoid the 3 hour drive home late at night after visiting friends in Birmingham we booked a night here. We stayed in the annex, which is not connected to the main building. The listing promised one king and one single, which is why we booked a room here as our teenager is sick of uncomfortable sofa beds. Unfortunately, what we got was a sofa bed. The king bed mattress had seen better days as we could feel every lump. The duvet was too thin and the room was very cold. The room was spacious and attractively decorated. Unfortunately the towns Christmas lights remain on, beaming bright blue-white light through the rooms windows all night long. It was impossible to get to sleep so we had to resort to attempting to hang towels from the curtain rails at 2am to try and form some sort of rudimentary blackout curtains. There were insufficient towels to cover all the windows and no additional sheets or duvets in the cupboard to help with the light or the cold. I only got about 2 hours sleep, so was more tired after staying there than I would have been if we had just driven home. Breakfast was included and was pleasant. Unfortunately, given the price we paid for the room (with the objective of sleeping well), it didn’t really make up for it. At check out staff did not ask us how our stay was so my partner had to make a point of telling them about the light pollution (they made excuses about the lights going off at a certain time but this was not the case with the Christmas street decorations). A pair of black out curtains would have significantly improved our experience.
The room was spacious & comfortable, with the beds made every day & the towels changed. The only downside was that our room was not above the pub itself but in another building located on the town square. Breakfast was included in the room. There was a good selection to chose from the menu. The staff were extremely friendly & helpful.
This was perhaps the fourth time that we had visited the Rose and Crown for breakfast, having been disappointed with the gluten free offering on previous occasions. However this time we were pleasantly surprised to see that they had ditched the bijoux steak and eggs and had the good old full english on the menu. Ok so if we are being picky and we feel that we should be on here, a fully gluten free English was not possible, which is what holds this back from being a five; the sausages had to be substituted for some extra bacon, but that’s fine. There was enough on the plate to satisfy a weary revealer from the night before and as such, we would recommend the Rose and Crown on current breakfast form.
Stayed here for just the one night but was very pleasant Right in the town centre - found parking easy enough but that might have been just luck Nice spacious room though was a touch cold in the bathroom (it was -5 overnight) Had a lovely dinner in the pub / restaurant downstairs & would certainly return!
Went there for New Year’s Eve French themed night Great atmosphere Staff very warm and friendly delivering great service The food was excellent Wonderful night celebrating the new year Really cant recommend the place enough Great range of ales and whine Very good selection of gin
Just popped in for brunch. The good: Nice, calm, clean, cosy environment inside; the staff were very friendly and helpful The bad: food was average and the portions were on the smaller side considering the price!
