We were extremely disappointed with our stay at The Imperial Hotel in Torquay. What was advertised on Expedia was completely different from what we experienced in reality – the photos and descriptions were very misleading, and we felt missold. After travelling nearly 5 hours from London, we had high expectations, but unfortunately everything fell short. The service was poor, the rooms were nothing like what was shown online, and the food was very disappointing. Overall, our stay was not what we expected and left us feeling frustrated and let down. This was meant to be a special trip, but instead it was a huge disappointment.

This hotel was built originally in the late 1800s, so has great architecture. The downside to this is the room floors creak terribly, so moving around is really annoying. The rooms are very clean and staff are helpful. We did not have any food in the hotel, so cannot make comment on that. Parking is advertised as "onsite parking" but this does not explain, at a cost of £10 for 24 hours. All in we had a pleasant experience, just the floors being the big issue.

Paid for a deluxe sea view room and got a view of trees, returned from dinner out and realised we were next to a wedding party with loud rave music. The room was dirty, bathroom full of public hair and hair in bed. Got moved to a different room 3 doors down which was much the same. Still noisy and still dirty. Couldn’t get any sort of refund because it was booked through hotels.com. The hotel rooms are very dated and very dirty. I expected more with how much I paid for it!

In many ways this is a lovely hotel. It has some beautiful original features within and has some great areas outdoors to enjoy. However the threadbare chairs and chipped old furniture in our room was really disappointing and unnecessary. I found it very difficult to get past the shabby feel of the room which no doubt clouded my overall impression of my stay. Would I stay again? I would love to say yes but only if I was reassured that the old dirty, smelly, threadbare chairs had been dispatched!!

General state of disrepair. Food in restaurant was awful and expensive. Alcohol in bar very expensive. Swimming pool advertised but closed when we got there. Booked a room with a balcony only to find we couldn’t actually get out on the balcony. Could hear people in the room next door and had to try to sleep to his awful snoring. Thought the disabled car parking would be monitored but we couldn’t get a space because 3 cars were parked with no badge. On a plus, the staff were very friendly, the views were amazing and the hotel was close to everything
