Excellent if this is what you are looking for. We booked this hotel because it was in the right area for the airport, as we had travelled down from Dehli and were flying to the Maldives from trivandrum. It was meant to be a four day rest stop before our next flight. I obviously made the mistake of not doing any research, as we were clearly in the wrong place. I was expecting a nice gin and tonic by the pool, but that was not going to happen. Not only because the hotel does not serve alcohol, but also because Kerala as a whole, is practically alcohol free, unless you are in a 5 star hotel. This hotel is perfect if you are looking for alternative treatments for body and soul, I couldn't criticize it...... If that's not what you are looking for, this is what you will get- A very basic room, no wardrobe, no TV, no fridge, no tea facilities. You do get a bed, which is very, very thin and hard, probably for people with bad backs, but not for me, sockets and a light switch that operates a fluorescent strip light. The bathroom was reminiscent of something from Tenko or "it ain't arf hot mum" a sight to behold. We couldn't even get a chilled water, everything was 30c, it seems they only have one fridge. Don't expect any meat of any sort either, they will look at you as if you are mad! Bearing in mind, this is the only restaurant available in the area, you are stuck with it. It is very small and intimate, so you will get to know other guests quickly, as there are only about 10 at a time. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining, I'm sure it is perfect for those looking to cleanse their souls etc, we were just not those people, so it didn't suit us. The staff and management were very understanding and polite and to be honest, they were excellent, no complaints there. Apart from the beach, there is absolutely nothing to do in the local area, not a shop, bar, restaurants, nothing really, certainly not for the average tourist. Looking for alternative treatments, go there, it's perfect. Looking for a comfortable night's sleep and a bit of sunbathing, don't go there.

My partner and I stayed for a week and were very impressed with the service and hospitality. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The food is delicious and the massages are amazing. There is a very nice chilled out vibe and you cannot help but be relaxed. I would definitely recommend.

Fantastic welcome by all the staff, especially the manager- Shameer. Professional therapeutic treatments, warm atmosphere. Accommodation is modest, but very good for the cost. Food is very tasty. Thank you Shameer for making our stay very comfortable! Alan&Sanja

Really calm family hotel. Very friendly and ready to help staff. Open for individual requests about food, treatment, trips! Very polite and with good sense of humor at the same time:) iIt is situated out of tourist area as lighthouse and ect but It creates specific atmosphere of calm and relaxation, it is guesthouse in good way, not the tourist hotel. Rooms are very simple but clean. I ve heard cocks and music from the temple (they start quite early) . The first morning was hard, but than I got used to it;) I didn t take the pack room+ayurveda, I took it separately. So I was free to try ayurveda here, and in some other resorts around. Treatment is good, I took several massages and shirodhara. But than I did it in other places just to try different. Very comfortable that everything situated in one area of resort. Yoga classes are on the roof in morning time, although you can arrange everything individually. The only discomfort is the way to the sea (it s not about the resort but the area itself). The sea is really close, about 10-15 min walk, but the road is tricky, hilly, through the bushes. The beach is beautiful, very little people, sand is nice, umbrella+bed are available for extra charge. but the sea is very wavy.

After some last minute personal disastrous experience in Kolkata, just before leaving for Kerala, it took three/ four days to get over my tension and stress. I was very much disoriented due to some personal reasons and had to cut short my plans for sight seeing, meditation and therapy programs. I had to stay in the resort more or less for the whole ten days and got looked after properly by the staff, especially the restaurant people. But I had requested for warm water for my father every night for taking medicine, which we never got. Maybe they were too busy to arrange for hot water for a single guest. We were given Room no 300 which was near the entrance. Since it was the only room having twin accommodation (I specifically asked or twin accommodation), we had to be contented with it. It was near the gate and a bit disturbing. One great inconvenience I faced was that the cloth stand in the room was in a dilapidated condition and no one bothered to change it. Second, one soap bar was kept in the bathroom, most probably used by the last guest. Apart from that, the house keeping was good. Bathroom and room was spacious and clean. The breakfast items was somewhat limited. They served two types of dosas, banana stew, oats, cornflakes and toast, sweet dish. Enjoyed the lunch and dinner. They make Ayurvedic food and the food helped me to get well. The therapists were ok. I have had experience with better lady therapists in Kerala. They will arrange cabs for you immediately if you want to go for sight seeing. Only one big problem with them is that it takes ages to get them answer to your initial query. Before booking the room, I had called them up several times from Kolkata and written them emails for some last minute clarifications but they never bother to pick up the phone or reply to the mails. The excuse they gave was that "we were very busy". I don't know how can they reply like this to their customer. I almost was cancelling the reservation and thinking of staying in another home stay. Apart from these inconveniences, it is definitely worth a try to stay here in this huge property though the Sea Beach is not near.

I spent 3 nights with my husband. The staff is very nice, the food is really good. Actually we had one of our dinners at Somatheeram resort, luxurious resort with a huge buffet and I can assure you that the Ideal Ayurvedic buffet is tastier even if it's smaller ! The resort is absolutely clean. The rooms around the swimming-pool are very pleasant. The room we booked was located im the old building, when we arrived, as it wasn't full around the swimming-pool, the manager, a lovely guy, offered us a room around it (first floor, best location). If we have the opportunity to come back to Chowara beach, we will come again to Ideal Ayurvedic Resort without any hesitation. Thank you again to the whole staff

I was a bit apprehensive before arrival at Ideal as didn’t know what to expect but it was a fear soon dispelled on arrival . There are so many Ayurveda clinics around and they all say they are the best , so it’s a confusing choice . Ideal has Ayurvedic treatments and has a mix of people staying . Some come for treatments and some just to relax . Indians stay for a few days at most normally whereas Europeans and Japanese were staying for anything from 10 days to 2 weeks .! We stayed for nearly three weeks and had Panchkarma for two weeks . I had to extend though as was badly sun burnt ( my own stupid fault !). The staff really took care of me though and I felt part of the family . The doctor Sibi Raj will take your blood pressure and ask for a blood test plus recommend treatments applicable to your doshas . And also will supply tablets and oils to assist the process . Although we booked on , we were given an option by Sunu to pay for a package including food , accommodation and treatments plus morning yoga . Shameer is the manager and is overseeing the smooth running of the establishment. He’s always helpful and ready to make things right for the guests . The owner is there but he’s a bit ill . The food was very good on the whole and the waiters like Vinny always smiling and Manny very helpful . It’s much cheaper than the expensive Somatherm close by but the accommodation and buildings need a refurbishment. It’s not something that spoils the treatments and most of India is similar . Plus the staff are friendly and the hospitality makes up for the lack of modernisation . Also it’s like a small family at breakfast , lunch and dinner as others are invited to share tables and we met a lot of people that way . And everyone became friends so itvwas a great family feeling There is yoga is the morning at 8 30 am . The teacher is a nice guy and the postures are beginner level . Like Sivananda and on the roof Also there is a swimming pool from about 8 am which was great . And possibility to do trips via taxi to local places such as Kovalam. And the beach is not far to walk to . In the early morning at 6 am you get to see the fishermen bringing in the overnight haul of fish . All in all you will feel better here as the Ayurveda treatments are very professional and the doctor is spot on . Treatments are a powerful cleansing for the body and a lot of toxins are released . You will feel amazing by the time you leave .

I ended a month-long trip to India with a week in the full-board program at Ideal. This included Dr. Cibi's expert care and herbal medications, daily rooftop yoga with Sudevan, hours of warm coconut oil and herb massages with Beena, and 3 very healthful meals and delicious fresh fruit juices served by the always cheerful and efficient Vinny. It was truly a little bit of heaven on earth! The rooms could use a bit of maintenance, and dinners could have a bit more variety, but other than that, I have only wonderful things to say about my stay. The pool is crystal clean, the guests who are attracted here are adventurous travelers from all over the globe, and the manager Shameer makes certain you always have what you need for a comfortable stay. I had a terrific time, and left feeling relaxed and refreshed. I can't wait to return for an even longer stay, next time with my husband. I highly recommend Ideal!

The manager and the staff are all very nice. The hotel is located in a quiet backlane and has a nice swimming pool and restaurant. Rooms are clean. The beach is close by. Note that there are not so many restaurants in the area. There are a few ATMs closeby, but when I visited, they were closed on 2 days, so bring some cash or go to the money changers
