We have been coming here 2-3 times a year for the last 8 years and it remains one of our favourite places to stay and walk from, so long as you pick good weather. Apart from the cliff side walk to Artenara, there are excellent forest trails in Tamataba and towards Cruj Grande.
Spent three nights at this Parador in April and had a wonderful stay. The Parador is very much off the beaten track and away from the touristy South. The drive to and from the airport and beaches were hair-raising to say the least, though views were spectacular! The views from the room and restaurant were truly breath-taking (particularly sunset)and show a really rural and unspoilt side to this Canary Isle. The spa was also pretty good. I would recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to 'get away from it all' and who is into nature, walking and quaint rural towns. Car hire is a must if you want to explore further afield. My husband and I hired a car and explored this wonderful island, with a couple of trips to Maspalomas beach in the South (in my opinion, the only nice beach on the island). The drive back to the Parador after a day of 'sunning' was a long one but it was a welcome retreat to return, from the developed South. Food was pretty decent at the Parador though venture a bit further by car and there are some lovely, traditional restaurants in nearby towns. A pleasant relaxing stay with incredible views in a beautiful setting. I was a little un-enamoured with the staff and service however and therefore give this Parador four stars.
Go to hotel rural el refugio instead. At the Paradores, every member of staff, apart from the girl on reception in the evening, were miserable, smug, cold and unapproachable. Particularly the woman on reception whose attitude towards us was rude and arrogant. No welcome 'hello', 'how can I help?, no conversation! Looked like she had a bad smell under her nose. There was an extra 25 euro charge if we wanted to use the partially open spa! You could get it free if you paid for 2 overpriced and underexciting meals each during your stay ... whoopee ... We passed on that one ... Personally I think at the price this hotel charges, it should be free for guests. Ive since read about extra charges for spa flip flops, robes and to sit on the terrace while you have a drink ... total rip off! The hotel lacked atmosphere. Everwhere you went was quiet and the staff ignored us when we entered the reception, dining room and the bar. The dining room was silent, but for the sound of cutlery. No music or conversation. Perhaps they were just eating there to get access to the spa ... certainly didn't look like they were there for the ambiance! With no option to eat out in the area, our only begrudging option was to eat there. Not wishing to ruin the uncomfortable silence in the dining room, we asked the evening reception girl about room service. She said we would juet be charged for the food. I clarified ... 'no extra charge?' ... 'No ... just the food'. Brilliant! The next morning, we were ignored by 2 other members of staff on reception, and had to wait for 'the smiling assasin' to serve us so imagine our annoyance (and the her smug face) when we were charged 10 euros for room service! We had to leave to get the bus and she made no apologies and NO EFFORT to take any money off for us. Turns out the night receptionist had given us the wrong info about room service charges AND the time of the bus arriving. Went to El Refugio for a coffee and the owner there was an absulure angel, called a taxi for us and gave us a free coffee. Wish we had stayed there instead!!
In an ideal location, this hotel "parador" is close by car, and a few hours walking to the major natural attractions of the island. The rooms offer atonishing views of the mountains. You can enjoy the sunset every night from the balcony. It has a good restaurant, although the menu is a bit limited. The employees are very kind and helpful. The place is really quiet, ideal if you travel with kids, as we did. The hotel has an spa, small, but enjoyable, and a gym. Parking is not a problem. The only negative aspect is the internet, not working once in the rooms.
We enjoyed a four night stay in a large well maintained room with fabulous views across the mountains of Gran Canaria towards Tenerife from the large picture window and balcony. Food presentation and quality was excellent. The Spa was a welcome retreat after long days walking. All the staff were welcoming and very helpful. An excellent hotel in a fantastic location for walking enthusiasts. There are walking trails starting near to the Parador, and many others within a short drive away. Overall good value and I have no hesitation recommending. We will return.
Spectacular views, relaxing environment and ideally suited for walking in the centre of Gran Canaria, the Parador Cruz de Tejeda is wonderful. Make sure you book time in the spa - an experience not to be missed.
Spent two nights here during a glorious heat-wave in early March. High in the mountains and close to numerous walking routes, the views are just stunning. The hotel is discretely built into the hill-side and I presume every room has the most fantastic view over a valley towards Roque Nublo. The Spa is very small but we had it to ourselves for a while, which was wonderful. The food was also excellent, although some patience with the staff in the main restaurant is required. (Imagine you are at a Fawlty Towers evening and maintain your sense of humour!).
We stayed two nights and had a full day exploring the area on foot, including the very pretty village of Tejeda. The parador was comfortable with a Scandinavian-style décor as opposed to the (for us) more interesting style of the historic paradors we have visited. Reception staff were very helpful and provided excellent information on local walks. Food was good without being remarkable and the dining room staff seemed to be run off their feet. Best aspect of this parador was the setting.
We loved this hotel. The staff was extremely kind and willing to go out of their way to help--printing maps of hiking routes and organizing early morning coffee. But the real reason to stay here is the view from the private balconies overlooking the mountains. Conditions can often be windy, and you are out of the wind with an unobstructed view of the sun setting over the mountains. We had a bit of fog swirling over the sun, and it was spectacular. The bar was nice enough to open up a bottle of wine we'd brought, and we enjoyed a glass of wine and the amazing view. Several trails also intersect right behind the hotel, including one that goes to Roque Nublo (we were told this would take 3-4 hours roundtrip), so the location is great. There is also free parking. For a grocery store or gas, you need to go 9 km to the town of Tejada (also great views and a quaint little town). There is a restaurant in the hotel plus a cafe that serves small bites if you don't feel like driving to Tejada.
