Hadn't booked in advance in Taupo and took a chance that we would find accommodation on arrival. However, three motels in with no luck finding decent accommodation we came upon Colonial Lodge. We paid a little more than we would have liked but not over the top - the reason everywhere was so full was due to an Iron Man event which we hadn't known about. Happy to pay the extra as it meant we had air conditioning in our unit - one of the places we had declined was stifling hot and the extra was well worth the money. Small laundry room available for guests with separate washer and large dryer - soap powder provided. Really pleasant walk along the shore of the lake - which is directly opposite. Anthony pointed out where to avoid entering the lake and being scalded by the hot springs - very useful tip. Two hosts were extremely welcoming, gave us lots of tips about local restaurants and trips. Small kitchenette provided which included fresh milk but we ate out at recommended restaurants for both breakfast (Replete - excellent) and evening meal. Unit had everything we required, it was clean if just a little dated - studio consists of room with twin beds, kitchenette and largish bathroom, one bed unit means the same but with access to a separate, double bedroom. We really enjoyed Taupo and ended up staying on an extra day - it helped that we had fantastic weather when we were there so we could enjoy sitting down by the lake - chairs being provided by our ever attentive hosts.
Stayed one night in a studio unit passing through, room looked recently decorated, bed was comfortable, bathroom spotless. Plenty of tea and coffee supplied, a table outside each unit as well on the ground floor. Motel was busy but not excessively noisy. The lake is just over the road. Sure you can pay a lot more for a lakeview from your room, but for 1 night you shouldn't! Reception staff friendly and efficient
Room is very spacious and comfortable with TV, king size bed and second smaller bed. Everything is clean and tidy. Motel is run by two decent man who are there to answer on all questions regards Taupo and all possible options to make your time interesting in that remarkable place. You have fridge, microwave, kettle and cooker to prepare your own food. Bathroom and toilet are nice and clean. Colonial Lodge is located in the centre of Taupo very near by all attractions at the front of big Taupo Lake. If you would like to relax during your trip trough New Zealand then you have to visot that place!
We had a twin room apartment, had a kitchenette, en suite, table etc little area outside to sit. Beds very comfy laundry room available. Anthony was so helpful advising you best places to go and full of local tips. We ate in but loads of places to eat in Taupo. The lake and small shingle beach opposite and what sunsets. A gem of a find would definitely recommend this motel.
We booked this motel a while ago to stay in Taupo for an event and when we checked into the Motel we were met by a gentleman who probably shouldn't be at the front desk of reception. He handed us over to another gentleman who was very helpful and courteous. He took us to our room and while it was ok it was rather dated, the facilities were tired (Pots losing their non stick into your food) While the very basics were there they were near the end of their useful life cycle in a motel. The bathroom was functional but the toilet was stuck right behind the door and you felt very claustrophobic when using the toilet. The shower was the redeeming feature of the bathroom. The bed was HARD and quite small, the wall are thin and you can hear everything happening around you. I would find it hard to return to this motel or recommend it to anyone. The price paid for this motel is the same as others with far superior facilities. It seems that the owner/manager was trying to squeeze every bit of life out of everything before replacing it. This is only my opinion but !!!
My wife and I stayed here for two nights and we were very comfortable. Very welcoming and friendly hosts who greeted us with home made biscuits on our arrival. The one bedroom unit was spacious, clean and tidy but the bathroom is ready for refurbishment, however this didn't detract from our overall experience. The room had aircon and ceiling fans so we were able to keep cool. The curtains were good quality and the room was still dark in the morning so we were able to sleep comfortably. Parking on site is limited especially if you have a big vehicle but I think everyone managed to squeeze in. I did feel as though it was overpriced at $220 per night but it is peak season and it was one of the busiest weekends of the year for Taupo. We would stay again
The staff were great and nothing was a problem and very helpful too,(great hospitality) it is on the lake front and you get some nice view's of the lake. It is a little bit out from the middle of town but you can walk into town and it is a nice walk along the lake side. The room we had was clean but a little tired especially the bathroom, parking is a bit tight. We were luckily as we got a car park out the front.
Charged $180 a night. Unit nice size. Tidy. Not happy with the bed, way to soft and doesn't support back. Toilet is tiny and space around it is very limited. Makes very hard to do the paperwork. Said heat pump in all rooms, but none in ours. Car parking is absolutely ridiculous. Small cars when they are parked very carefully, you struggle to walk between them. The rest of the place is nice. Great view of the lake. Very nice host.
From the moment we arrived, we received great hospitality and nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. The room was well laid out and very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The location was on the Lakeside and we were treated to spectacular sunsets over Lake Taupo from the veranda outside our room. There were good Amenities nearby and the motel had a good laundry for the use of guests at no extra charge. The location was great for sight seeing in the area and Anthony was always happy to offer advice on what we should see. We will definitely be recommending this place to family and friends.
We stayed one night at this comfortable motel facing the shores of Lake Taupo. When we arrived we found that we had only one double bed rather than the twin beds we had requested. NO problem- our host Anthony moved us next door to a unit with three beds! The motel is well situated onto lake front, but it is a bit far to walk to the shops, as we found out on a windswept showery evening. Nevertheless I thoroughly recommend this motel, and coomenfpd our host Anthony for his thoughtfulness and kind hospitality.
