Best Western Hotel Takayama3.0 out of 5.0

The best thing about this hotel is when you walk out of the western entrance of the train station look slightly to your left and up a fraction and viola there is the sign. Maybe a four minute walk to the place. The only thing that bugged me about Japan is the three P.M check in time and they never seem to relax that even if the room is ready. There is no in room safe and that is a bit of a nuisance having to run to the office to store any valuables. The huge toilets in the place were a bit of a nuisance as you have to turn sideways to get past the thing. Plenty of power points for a change. The buffet breakfast was a bit ordinary to say the least. The best thing is that everything is within easy walking range.
the hotel is located very close to the train station and restaurants. I would suggest ordering the western breakfast as it is a buffet with a lot more variety than the Japanese breakfast which was a simple set meal, quite mediocre. front office staff was very helpful and courteous.
I could not book a room with the others in my group so decided to try the Best Western as an option (they had a room, and it wasn't a silly price). Room size (I chose) was larger than I expected and comfortable (I see other reviews complaining about the room size, but for Japan, pretty good). Check-in/check-out was efficient and friendly. I would stay here again - maybe not the quality I need for my business (housing tour guests), but in a pinch it would be adequate. As an additional note, on the seventh floor during an earthquake the building shakes a lot, even enough to open the wardrobe, but no damage - comforting. (there was a strong earthquake during my stay)
The hotel is only 2 minutes to Takayama train station and shrikawa go buses. You can reach traditional shopping street within 15 minutes by walking. It is a basic hotel and enough for only sleeping. We finished Takayama in half day.
We have stayed 2 nights in a deluxe twin (7th floor). The plus: 5 minutes from the train and bus station. Ideal when you take the bus every day to go sightseeing. Friendly staff at the reception who helped us for the bus schedule, the taxi and the restaurants booking. Recently renovated room with all the necessary equipment. The minus: very small room (23 sq meters) with tiny bathroom. No charm, just practical. Breakfast made us think we were in a communist country with limited and basic choice. Everything was tasteless and looked cheap.
This is a rather standard "Best Westin" in the tourist city of Takayama. The hotel is located rather near the JR station and many dining places. The room is generally tidy and standard. It is a bit small for our family of three. Given the relative high room price, the provision in the room is rather basic and a bit disappointing. Staff of this hotel can speak fluent English and are nice and attentive. A reasonable accommodation option to visit Takayama and Shirakawa-go if you can get a discounted or good deal in room rate.
Stayed here for 2 nights in 2 rooms as part of a Japan tour. The building is modern, light and up to date. Our deluxe double rooms were large and very clean. Like other Japanese hotels there wasn't a lot of clothes storage space. Plenty of toiletries in the good sized bathrooms. Breakfast was ok if nothing special if you wish for a western style breakfast; not a huge variety of fresh fruit and the warm food was limited, but decent bread and croissants. The hotel is 2 mins walk from the station and then a 7-8 minute stroll from the historic district of Takayama. Overall a good 3* standard in my view. Staff were very friendly and were able to help with transferring on luggage. Pre-arrival communication before we arrived was pretty poor; we struggled to book direct with the hotel and ended up booking via expedia. DIrect communication with them was via a web form (which they rarely answered) rather than via an email address, so I did arrive with a little trepidation (especially as the photos on the website itself dont do it justice) but needn't have worried- the hotel is very pleasant.
We liked this hotel mostly because the rooms were comfortable, spacious and is within close proximity to most places you would like to see in Takayama and food places. The staff were efficient and helpful.
It was a real pleasure to visit Best Western in Takayama! unexpected European style hotel in the old countryside. All amenities not to forget modernized version of onset with rain room (great to visit after hard day of sightseeing :)). They also offer massage on site, and pricing is very reasonable. I am not a big fan of Best Western in the U.S., but in Japan if was surprisingly nice and relaxing. location is in walking distance from everything.
The best thing was the 5 minutes walk from the train station. Unfriendly service* and old rooms, not a good deal, but it's cheap... We had to fight to have our luggage kept in a separate room and not in the lobby... Terrible breakfast buffet but I must say, the waitress from the Philippines, 25 years in Takayama, was extremely friendly, witty and did a good job. We only stayed 2 nights and had no time to use the internet, but it was at the edge of not working. *Usually in Japan, the service is extremely polite and friendly. This was not the case.
