Excellent stay in a very comfortable, friendly B&B
Perla del Sole is a small, friendly B&B, though with a hotel-style reception, in the resort of Arenella, 8km from Syracuse. The hotel manager (who spoke excellent English) greeted us warmly and provided plenty of helpful information, such as maps, local restaurants, transport information, etc. The rooms were comfortable with all the essentials, including air conditioning (definitely needed at night, as it stays hot after sundown in Sicily) and free wi-fi, and were well cleaned daily. Continental breakfast, part self-service, part served by a member of staff called Carmen (who, though not speaking English, was still very helpful and friendly), was plentiful and served on an attractive balcony with views of the sea (the beach is just a two-minute walk away).The hotel was also secure with a locked gate, and had a garden and outdoor shower (handy for removing the sand after visiting the beach). A minute's walk away was a fruit and vegetable stall, which also sold water and soft drinks, and a cafe selling soft and alcoholic drinks, pastries, ice cream and pizza. Restaurants are further afield - we had a hire car and in under 10 minutes could easily reach nice waterfront restaurants with views across the bay to Syracuse and, beyond, Mt Etna (even though it's 100km away!). The hotel provided a good base for exploring the southeast Sicilian coast, the ancient city of Syracuse/Ortygia, and places further afield like Ragusa, though you will need a car. Very relaxing and recommended.
