Lovely stay, has a great big apartment. Would recommend this place to others. Very comfortable like a home away from home! Was a tad cold on our visit so no swimming in the pool, but the courtyard looked lovely. Will stay here again.
We booked this hotel for my son's 6th birthday, to take him to the Australia Zoo. I was deciding between here and Oaks Oasis (they were about the same price over this weekend). I decided to choose this hotel, as I had read good reviews about it, and it has a kitchen so I thought we'd save some money cooking our own food rather eating out. This hotel is conveniently located right across the street from Dicky beach. Our boys, 3 & 6, had a great time on the beach playing in the rock pools, discovering little creatures and collecting shells. When we arrived, they had us in a unit on the top floor with a nice view to the beach. But the unit was absolutely filthy and there is no lift to get to the top so we had to drag all our luggage and 2 kids up 3 flights of stairs to get to the top. There was a film of dirt on the walls, floors, bathtub, and toilet. The kitchen was old and dirty, the coffee maker still had coffee bean residue left in it. The managers were great and promptly organised another room for us, which was on the ground floor, so easier to access with the children and the room was cleaner but still not great. The rooms were so old and dusty that I had allergies the entire weekend we were there, so didn't spend much time in the room and tried to stay outside most of the stay. Then only good thing about staying here was that we discovered the best Japanese restaurant just down the street, Yumi. We had dinner there 2 nights in a row, so didn't end up needing to use the kitchen much anyhow. Other than Yumi, there were not many other good eating options around there.
We stayed in a one bedroom apartment, it was definitely showing signs of its age. There was a small 2 burner hob to cook on, it was rusted all around the edges. I didn't even want to touch the exhaust fan above it. I couldn't open the dishwasher. I was very surprised that there was no exhaust fan in the bathroom, that probably explains the poor state of the bathroom fittings. The ceiling fan above the bed was all rusted out on the edges too. One positive was that there was a washing machine & clothes dryer inside a cupboard, however I couldn't open the lid of the washing machine properly due to the positioning of the clothes dryer above it. Made it very awkward to load and unload the washing machine. When we opened the doors onto the balcony we could overhear everyone around us and in the pool below. There were no fly-screens on the balcony doors. We also found it very odd that the reception opening hours on the weekend were 9am to 3pm - not very convenient at all. There is a lift to the apartments (when it works) however there is still a small staircase to negotiate either up or down depending on which room you had. Location was ok, with basic shops a short walk away. Overall we were not very happy with this accommodation and frankly couldn't wait to leave it. Would not rate it as 4-star accommodation!
I stayed here with friends for the weekend. The staff extremely polite and very helpful. I received a text message to notify me that our apartment was ready for check-in at 11:30am which was extremely convenient. There are a number of cafes/restaurants within 200 meters, along with a BWS, an IGA, and the beach is across the road. If ever I'm in Caloundra again, I will definitely stay here again.
Relaxing time for our family of 5. Even though the weather was not the best the appt is spacious and well supplied and the beach and the pool still beautiful. Plenty of good places locally to dine eg Tuk Tuk Thai, Surf Club and well stocked reasonably priced bakery and butcher.
The staff at the Portobello are very friendly. The accommodation is very good, self contained units have everything you need and are clean and comfortable. Fantastic location close to the beach with shops and restaurants close by. The restaurant downstairs - Three Bar and Grill is first class, best steaks ever and very good service. The Portobello is our family's favorite destination north of the Gold Coast. Short drive from Australia Zoo and has a pool and bbq area.
Location was practical for our requirements. The apartment was spacious, clean and had all that we required plus an ocean view. As it was within walking distance to the beach, the three days proved to be very therapeutic.
I made a mistake when booking through booking.com and booked for March instead of February. We had our granddaughters 3rd birthday on Saturday morning at Currimundi Lake and then were going to stay up the coast for the night to escape the relentless heat. I called at 12 to see if we could check in early and then found out about my booking error. The lady found us a one bedroom apartment and although I'd originally booked 2 bdr we were able to borrow a blow up mattress from my son for our friends. Our apartment was number 26. The lady said their was a sofa bed in the lounge but it was only a single. When we arrived it looked like a double but was 'chained and locked' so we could not even see if it would be suitable. The apartment was clean and spacious and well kept. With a balcony we did not use because of the heat and the air con was out there blowing hot air. The pool was lovely in the morning when the water was cool and clean but by the afternoon there was an oily film on it from sunscreen and dirt and grass. This pool obviously needs a more powerful filtration system. There was a party at the pool which went on from about 11.30pm until 3.30 in the morning. So we had to close the window because of the noise. Also, there were no fly screens on the windows or doors. We didn't do any cooking here but I'd think the place would be full of flies if the doors and windows were open. We hired some DVDs from the office. I'm not sure if it was the tv or DVD player but the quality was very bad and it was difficult to understand the dialogue. Portabello is across the road from the beach so only a couple of minutes walk. The cafes are also only a couple of minutes walk and we enjoyed fish and chips and burgers and bacon and eggs for our meals. All cooked nicely with healthy accomplishments. Reasonable value for money I suppose. Although my original booking for the 2 bedroom apartment cost $280 through booking.com. This one bedroom apartment cost $260.00 for four adults with our own blow up mattress. Which was the price of the 2 bdr without the booking fee. I'm just wondering why???? If the managers would like to respond to my review I would very much welcome their response.
Secure parking with key access - same for access after 6pm to property. 200m walk from beach (across 1 road at pedestrian crossing). Patrolled beach. 4 cafes and 1 restaurant in easy walk, BWS and Pharnacy part of commercial tenancy attached to property. We had a 2 bedroom unit, it was clean and nicely appointed. Air-conditioner was beautiful but had a clicking noise we couldn't stop. Although the balcony overlooked the road, closing the doors we couldn't hear a lot of traffic noise. Small but sufficient pool for a resort. Nice shallow areas suitable for young kids. BBQ area and plenty of seats & lounges.
This was my 2nd time staying at this property, the first time was exactly a year ago. The property is now under new management and has become a little run down since my last visit. More attention to detail needs to be made, our cupboard in bedroom had cobwebs and dust in them, the floors were grainy with sand and the bathrooms have mould in the grout. On our first night the air conditioning system started leaking and we had a floor full of water and needed to put a bucket under the leak. I advised management the next day and they had maintenance fix it but when I returned to my room there was a note telling me to leave the temperature at the set amount and not touch it and also to keep all our doors closed. I hadn't touched the temp or left the doors open, I felt the note was rather rude. Unfortunately my next stay at the Sunshine Coast will not be here.
