This is an extremely ridiculous hotel and the majority of the staff are extremely rude and unhelpful. Neither the facilities not the service is close to 5 stars. I am quite shocked by what we experienced. The parking situation is outrageous - noone knows whats happening, they only know to ask you for 30 levs each time you come in and go out. The parking guys charged us and then reception charged us. The elderly night male receptionist as well as the younger guy doing night shifts, are both very rude and when i approached them regarding the parking situation they were unprofessional and said im incompetent. As i walked away the elderly guy said insulting things about me which is ridiculous in a 2 star hotel, but in a 5 star hotel?? They act like they are general managers and not like their main job description is serving guests, providing information and being helpful. They were very full of themselves and arrogant so i really cant get it in my head how someone like this be hired in a 5 star hotel. Really disgusting behaviour. When i went in the shower i was "pleasantly" surprised with a "f#?! you" greeting on the steamed up mirror and i have picture to prove it. Again, you call yourself a 5 star hotel? Hm. Every night there is an event until 2-3 am, and every morning construction starts at 8am. When we asked on our third night if there will be an event they just lied in our faces saying no, however there was a blasting party until 3am. You are paying 5 star room rates for a non-existing customer service and to be listening to music. It is impossible to sleep in this hotel and obviously noone can do anything about it. The service we received was border line disgusting, and it really made our stay unpleasant. We will definitely not be back - this "hotel" is not built with the purpose of sleeping. Please hire less "general managers" and more receptionists who are willing to help and who will not insult guests who pay to stay there. My advise is to avoid at all costs. It is NOT a five star hotel.
Extraordinary hotel! One of the best hotels I have visited! Do not hesitate to book your stay. Rooms are beautiful, restaurant includes delicious dishes and the staff is really polite and friendly! Really High speed internet is offered throughout the hotel premises! We stayed for one night but we will definitely visit it again! Even though the hotel is under renovations you will not understand a thing! Great job Sofia Bankan!!
Great twin room with high ceilings. Larger than most in Europe. Central location. That being said my 6’2” friend did not fit under the fixed shower head so that wasn’t great. Restaurant closed earlier than timetabled rather disappointingly so never managed to eat there. Helpful staff. If I travelled to Sofia again I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here!
I just completed a two night stay at the Sofia Hotel Balkan and had an excellent experience! From check-in to check-out, the staff were courteous and helpful. My SPG Platinum status was recognized at check-in, resulting in an upgrade to a Junior Suite. As a personal touch, I found a welcome tray with champagne and macaroons on the living room table. At the present time, the Executive Lounge is being refurbished; to compensate for the inconvenience, the staff included breakfast at the hotel restaurant each morning and gave me drink/snack vouchers for the hotel bar (much appreciated). The hotel is located in a great spot- 10-15 minute walk to most major sites, and a 5 minute walk to a terrific grocery store (Billa) if you want to pick up some snacks/drinks for the room. Highly recommended!
The hotel is fantastic. The room was great and the largest I had ever been! The food was great and most delicious 😋! All the stuff was very polite and the guys in the resection too! We are anxious to see the new restaurant in the hotel!
I chose this hotel after looking at the hotel’s official website describing the luxury hotel and its special amenities. Unfortunately, none of the things described actually existed as follows: 1. Executive lounge: I booked a “smart room” in which the main feature advertised is lounge access. The rate for such a room is about 40 euro more than the standard room but I decided to pay more in order to get the lounge access. Upon check in I was told that there is no longer a lounge at this hotel. It had been closed for several weeks but nevertheless, the option to book a room with lounge access still exists even today. Instead of the lounge we were given small pieces of paper as “vouchers” for free drinks and snacks at the lobby bar. These “vouchers” can not replace a real lounge experience . After talkingto the manager we recieved a refund of 20 euro per day. 2. Concierge service: The website proudly describes a 24/7 concierge service. The reality is totally different- in most cases there was no one there and when we asked for assistance we met a young woman (who left her position at the reception) and told us that she was the concierge. She was very nice but hardly knew anything! She had problems locating things on the map, gave us wrong information and even told us later that day she had made reservations for us at a restaurant only there was no such thing! Is this the special concierge service the luxury hotel is so proud about? 3.Construction! The hotel is under massive construction inside and outside. There is continuous noise and dust all day. There is no notice of such work no where on the hotel’s official website or upon reserving a room and getting a confirmation letter. How can Sheraton (and Marriott) advertise and sell something that DOES NOT EXIST? The lounge has been closed for several weeks (and we were told that there would not be a new lounge in the future) but nevertheless, the option to book a room with lounge access still exists even today. In addition we also had an issue with the cleanliness of the room and needed to have housekeeping come back. All in all a very disappointing experience!
Good staff at the reception. Very helpful, made reservation for us at restaurants, made local calls for us. Good breakfast, you can choose your eggs and coffee. Nice casino. In the center. Metro station in front of the hotel.
This is still a beautiful hotel conveniently placed for shops, culture and station, however along with group of colleagues, returned to this hotel for our annual Christmas weekend break. There seemed to be plenty of rooms but we were put in a room next to a part of the hotel that is being refurbished. The building work, drilling and hammering started at 0900 and finished at 1700and when we opened our room door we were face to face with another open door leading to the building site. The good news is that we weren't in the room that much but thought it was a bit inconsiderate on their part. I realise we could have asked to be moved but it had a great view especially when it snowed. Last year breakfast was included whereas this year breakfast was extra at 15 euros per person which is a bit steep for what is on offer. However there are plenty of places nearby to get a good breakfast at a much more reasonable price. If going to Sofia I would really recommend this hotel but do be careful where they put you. You couldn't help but get a good nights sleep in those beds though - a delight.
Hopefully I’ve made it clear enough. Right now there is construction work happening on the ground floor and every morning between 8-9 there is loud hammering that starts, even on Sunday!! Each time I’ve been assured and it’s been passed through the general manager that it won’t happen again but it does. Don’t take their word for it as they just say the things you want to hear.... Rooms are okay, decor is dated with high ceilings. Bed is comfy but took 3 attempts to change the bedding to non feathers due to husbands allergies. Also have my parents in another room and their curtains are almost falling down (they are really heavy to open and shut) Bathroom is okay but signs of mould on the tilings. The day I allowed the maids in we didn’t get anything replenished in the bathroom, luckily we had just enough but I’m sure if I rang down they would have supplied it. Mini bar is extortionate, better off buying stuff locally and putting it in their fridge. Although no smoking is allowed, if you open your window all you can smell is smoke from outside Every night there seemed to be some loud party in the ball room on the other side but that wasn’t too bad as the sound didn’t carry through unless the corridor door was open. Wouldn’t come here again and certainly wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for a quality hotel and a decent night sleep. At best a 3 star. The grandeur of the building makes it look luxury but in short the service and dated furnishings brings it down
The hotel is down town. Perfect location for walks shopping sight seeing. Although 5 stars I would rank it between 3 -4. Old fashion decoration bar and restau very average. Rooms from older decades though sometimes attractive. Heating in first floor inadequate. Many options to improve and become real 5 star hotel.
