I came here with a group of friends hoping to have an enjoyable holiday and sample a few bars in Sofia. We chose this hotel as it is 5 star in the city centre. The location is great, but the hotel is poor. For starters the sauna and gym area are terrible- there were open doors for exit and staff areas were water is dripping off the ceiling and there are no signs as to where you should go, it feels like you are in the start of a horror film. When we tried to use the casino one of the members of staff said one of our party was too drunk and refused us entry. That was fair enough but the manner in which they did it when we returned without our drunk friend was very intimidating and we felt physically threatened. We went back (sober) the next day and once inside there is also a very threatening feel in there. The overall hotel lacks character and is bland and has a poor atmosphere, you feel like they genuinely do not want you to be there.
Rooms are not bad, late check-in is fine and breakfast us excellent. That is all good about that place. My room was too warm, dusty and not very clean and couldnt let the windiw open due to colder weather overnight. Shower was broken. Wifi didnt work properly. For later check-out they asked for 20,-euro per hour ?!? Coffee and minibar extra expensive - several timea average. Two stars only for the staff who was really trying to help a little. If u can, choose the other place to stay
The Sofia Hotel Balkan, still known by locals the Sheraton, is a beautiful, well-managed hotel within walking distance of the major sites of Sofia. Upon arrival, there were some problems with our original room assignment which were quickly rectified by upgrading us to a spacious executive-level room. Bathrooms are modern, furnishing very comfortable and staff always helpful. Excellent English spoken at front desk and in dining room. The hotel still has an air of old world elegance. Superb breakfast buffet.
The 23 September 2017 when we arrive in the hotel we are requested to give a credit card in guaranteed of hotel services that we might use. In fact what they did was debited my credit card with 100BGN. On the check out date 25 September I ask to credit the card with the same amount and they tell me is going to take few days. I can not understand why they should take few days to credit my credit card. But I accept it. Today is 9th October and the bank has charge me with the 100BGN but the SOFIA BALKAN HOTEL has still not given me the money back. By the way the customer service is dreadful
Average all around. Typical Balkan style, probably very nice at one point. It is great location, but far from 'luxury.' Breakfast staff are usually just chatting with one another, not really looking to help guests. The room on the first day did not even get cleaned, out all day, returned at 5:30pm, no cleaning done. Pretty pathetic. WiFi is horrific. If you are on business, think twice, as it drops regularly.
This is a wannabe GrandHotel. It might have been big and exclusive in the late 90s but nowadays it cannot cope with such other hotels like a comparable (and better) Radisson Blu. It does not offer a spa or wellness area (the „sauna“ is old, dirty, uncomfortable and was „off“ during my stay), the rooms need urgently a renovation and the WiFi coverage in the rooms is awfully bad or not existent. Never ever again for a 200USD night.
I stayed for 4 days in this hotel. Before arriving I got in touch with the reservation team for few details about my stay, they have been extremely helpful and answering promptly to all my emails! I would mostly name Mariana and Evelyn. I also had very good advises from a guy at reception, shirt young blonde guy! He was going on the extra mile to satisfy my requests! Thank you all! And Ivan please smile :)
I would like to share that i used this hotel based on the best location in the center and because its also very clean . But this is my last time here as 3 three days now i am telling about the wifi that doesn;t work and they keep saying me that they will refresh the routers etc etc but nothing is working . I also heard a lot of people complaining about this As i am travelling for business and i paid a lot of money for my mobile bill , this is the last time here
The hotel is dated, but I don't mind that necessarily. What I did mind was the very slow checkin, the room was worn and the TV service wasn't full - they only have SD subscription and most of the channels just said they now required a HD subscription to work - BBC News gone! On the plus side, I ordered room service and it was really well made and fantastically presented. Hats off to the chef. The cleaning of my room was pityful - shower gels weren't replaced, so I ran out after day 1, and when I called down to get an iron delivered to my room (they aren't in as standard), it took 2 calls and about 35 minutes for this to happen. If you're bringing your family... bear in mind the hotel has a casino on the ground floor and a "Gentleman's Club" in the basement... which feels very seedy. I would say that it appears this hotel is understaffed. For an SPG property in a prime location with the word "Luxury" in the title, this certainly isn't luxury.
Just checked in a few minutes ago to find a room which had not been properly cleaned and very dated decor. The carpet has stains, the elevator doors are scratched badly, and the rooms are depressingly small. I visited the gym - minimalist with no pool. I don't know how this hotel holds a 5 star rating. Maybe things will improve but unfortunately not off to a good start.
