While we didn't stay at the guest house, we did join Helena for a tour of the goat farm and got to interact with the goats! It was delightful. The goats are obviously loved and well cared for and Helena was a delight. It's only a bit of a drive off the main road and well worth a bit of time to connect with a wonderful preservation effort in Iceland.
This has to be one of my favourite accommodations in Iceland! The farmhouse is beautiful and charming and Helena and Stefan were warm and welcoming on our arrival. We even got to see their adorable goats and dog. Our room was lovely as well, clean and with comfortable beds. I even loved the little touches of thoughtfulness in our hosts’ leaving fresh bottles of water for guests to use in the room, and allowing guests to use their coffee machine in the kitchen to make fresh coffee. I would 100% recommend this guesthouse to anyone who wants a different, more personalised accommodation experience in Iceland.
This was our first stop on our two-week Iceland vacation. Stefán and Helena run a friendly homestay out of their house. The room was comfortable with a nice, spacious kitchen to cook in and two good bathrooms. It was also fun to stay on a farm and see the wonderful conservation work they are doing to save a species. The couple do stay in recliners in the evening in the main guest house too and their adult kid and grandkid came over on the weekend. So, if you can get passed being in this family dynamic, then it is an enjoyable stay.
Great apartment, very comfy, and well supplied. We really enjoyed the location and the surrounding environment. It was very comfortable for a family of four. The goats were cute and playful, and we we're visited by one of the cats Highly recommend!
Stefán and Helena’s home in the country is a true gem. Immaculately clean and everything you need for a good nights rest so you can explore the countryside the following day. Take a moment to let Helena show you her goats!
This homestead is out in the country and a good opportunity to see northern lights. We did not see them because it was cloudy. We did not have the space over the goat barn. We had two rooms in a large building with eight rooms. The room had a small kitchenette which we did not use. The rooms were clean. We chose the smaller rooms and they were quite adequate. We came late and left early so we did not have interaction with the goats. Great views and quiet surroundings. Bring your own breakfast.
We stayed at Helena and Stefan's homestay with our two older teenagers, and after staying in many different places in Iceland, this remains one of our favorites. The apartment over the goat barn is spacious and comfortable, with all the amenities you need and an incredible view of 2 volcanoes from the kitchen window. The goats and cats are a great bonus, and the vibe of the whole place is an authentic Icelandic experience. The beds in Iceland tend to be too soft everywhere, but these beds were more comfortable than most. There are windows from the living room and extra room that look into the goat barn -the goats didn't use that room during summer when we were there, but if you are there in Winter, it will be great viewing! Tons of sleeping space for a family of 4, or even 5. LOVED this place.
We had a wonderful animal encounter at this homestay. It is a country side accommodation, around 20 minutes off the main road, I feel like it is more down to earth, less touristy. Helena and Stefan are very welcoming as well as their dog Max, they came to greet us as soon as we get off from our car. Max was so energetic he keeps running during our stay! Our rooms are at the stable of the goat, I guess there are other rooms in the main building where the hosts live. There are around 6 rooms at the stable, ours are double room with private bathroom and kitchen. They are very cozy, the kitchen is fully equipped with also some basic supply of seasoning, bathroom with toiletries, towels and hair dryer. We had a walk outside our room before we cook our dinner. Two cats rushed out to us and asked us to pet them! They were so cute! I think we spent an hour petting the two of them! Some goats on their way back to the stable also looked at us and wanted to join. We love the animals so much, we really enjoyed the time. After that we return to the room to have dinner, then we saw the cats were outside the window! they were like waiting at the door hoping they can come in to play! omg they are too adorable, so after dinner we went out to play with them again! Now I just think staying at this place for one night is way too short, I can spend one whole day just at the stable, the surroundings is also very nice, natural and quiet, I should have spend more time walking around. I also saw Helena brought some guest into the goat farm, so I guess if you are interested you can ask.
Our hosts were very hospitable and friendly. Our apartment was nicely laid out with a very large bathroom and two separate bedrooms. The farm is beautiful and the goats are so much fun to watch from the large windows. We would highly recommend Kálatjörn Home stay as the perfect home-base to explore the Golden Circle, Westman Islands, South Coast, and Reykjavik if you have a rental car.
We live in Reykjavík, but we had an errand a little west of Hella. We thought it would be nice not to have to drive all the way to the capital the same night. Booked a room at Skálatjörn Homestay. It was so nice and cosy and the werts made you feel so welcome. The goats come when you call them and they like to be patted.
