The Bird-Baldwin House has a rich, southern history. Built by Lewis Bird in 1838, it is the oldest home in Savannah South of Liberty Street. Bird, a prominent Savannah attorney, began the construct but tragically perished with his entire family on the Steamboat Pulaski when it exploded and sank off the coast of North Carolina on June 14, 1838. Bird's mother completed the house and sold it to his law partner, Mr. Baldwin, who lived in it for many years.

The house was commandeered and occupied by General Sherman’s staff as a temporary headquarters in December 1864, after Sherman’s infamous March to the Sea. The Bird-Baldwin House survived many subsequent transformations, including time as a boarding house and tavern known as “Harry’s Place,” before finally being restored and renovated.

This Savannah condo offers soaring ceilings, Savannah heart pine flooring, and large windows. The galley kitchen has everything you need to enjoy a meal, or to warm up any leftovers from Savannah’s extensive selection of restaurants. Fully equipped with all of the modern conveniences one could ask for; Convection oven/microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, dishes & utensils and a coffee maker. Enjoy a morning cup of joe on the back porch, or a evening glass of wine after a long day of sightseeing.

You’ll be a short walk from the Savannah Visitor’s Center, where you can easily pick up a guided trolley tour. While you’re out, have lunch at Soho South Cafe. Dishes like their Seared Salmon BLT (with spinach, tomato, bacon, and a tangy garlic aioli on a toasted honey wheat roll ) and Howlin’ Chicken (fried chicken breast with fried pickles, cheddar cheese, and house made jalapeno ranch) will make you glad you did!

Suggestion for slight improvement, power wash the stair railings so you can use them while ascending decending the stairs. From the 3rd floor, it made it challenging. The hand rails were really dirty from being weathered.

This location is within walking distance to so many places in the area. The trolley station and first stop is only a couple blocks away. A coffee shop right next door. My number one: the unit is very clean and well stocked. The photos don't do it justice. It's very spacious for a one bedroom-one bath unit. Some other reviewers have mentioned street noise. We noticed it but it wasn't bothersome to us. The traffic slowed down at night while we were asleep. They provide a white-noise machine for this purpose, but we didn't feel we needed it while we stayed there. We've found our place in Savannah. Thank you.

Very comfortable property all around. Spacious, clean, well appointed, nicer furniture than most rentals, kitchen clean, new and well stocked, good dresser and closet space, nice shower and bathroom, good working washer dryer. The only thing that could have been better understanding it's a tough one to keep up with is the condition of the stairs and porches which needed a cleaning/power wash. Parking also is excellent.
