We wanted a late night dinner. We were struck by how cheap the menu was for the pub food- something like £5.95 for fish and chips. But we thought that it looked warm and friendly through the window. We had the place to ourselves on a Friday night. We were told to order quickly because the chef was about to close the kitchen- we ordered 2x indian dishes and 2x indian selects to come with our main courses. The poor waiter took our drinks orders and got them slightly wrong but apologised and corrected the issue. 20 mins later he bought out my curry and a large plate of chips, salad and some indian selects (that were different to the ones on the menu) and presented them as two main courses... He warned us that the plates were hot. Firstly, the order was obviously incorrect, but also the plates were freezing cold so my curry quickly cooled, particularly when my partner's dish was sent back and we were waiting for his curry to arrive. We were then told that there was no curry left. So my partner asked for the indian selects instead... by which time my curry was stone cold, so I had to send it back... When it did arrive it was not that appetising! To apologise the waiter gave us some more drinks on the house. When we wanted to pay, we were totally alone in the restaurant so my partner was forced to try and find the manager in the hotel reception. Although the food was good value for money and the boy waiter did admit he had made mistakes consistently, it wasn't worth the hassle!
The location of the Hotel is great,The Staff are all friendly,The bed and linen is good and clean. We just felt that they are being let down by whoever owns the place now,This was my local go to place for many years when I lived there. Its a lovely old building and it deserves a bit more TLC from the owners .I worked in the hotel trade for many years .Please owners Make the Hotel Fabric shine as bright as your Staff, and Praise to your GM.for his excellent work.
I booked to stay and my paperwork clearly stated it included breakfast on arrival told no breakfast unless I paid another £10. Owner said not his fault but error on website, what a poor attitude I had booked in good faith but looking at room I shouldn’t have been surprised. Barely clean, the smallest tv with awful reception so couldn’t watch most channels, light seeping in from around curtains and door, very noisy, shower temperature all over the place, threadbare towels. Basically no redeeming features. The worst hotel I have stayed For years I will never stay again and advise you to stay elsewhere. Truly awful.
We chose a room with a king bed and we were very happy. It is in the city centre, which was nice. A great experience overall. Room was nice and clean and bathroom has a bath tub. We were very happy with our choice.
Went for lunch, barmaid didn't know how to use the till. Ordered sandwiches which took over half an hour to come out, we were then given stale bread on all of them and mouldy salad. All the salad had mould on them, one of us had fish and chips. Chips were over cooked and tasted awful, fish was over fried and hard. Considering it was quiet in there we were highly dissapointed and none of the food was edible.
Ideal location, bang in the center of town, hotels a bit dated, old and creaky, but nice and clean, towels were holey and threadbare. No lift available and steps were quite steep, which some might need to know. All I all, you get what you pay for. Nice place for a weekend.
We went on a Friday night, there were only 2 other people in there. We ordered drinks at the bar and went to find a table having started a tab with my card left in the till. Note no cash sales are allowed. We placed the order at the bar. The food arrived and as we hadn't eaten a burger here when not discounted it was difficult to know, but it did leave me wondering if they had reduced the size of the burgers along with the price?? The food was only just warm too. The waitress asked if we wanted any condiments and I asked for mayo but then returned with ketchup? The taste was OK. The menu said it was served with coleslaw but arrived with a dressed salad. The chips were good, wouldn't rush back if I'm honest as we were not inspired to return.
Quite a difficult place to find as it’s on the main High Street. The rooms are very dated and could do with a lick of paint and a refurbishment. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the local area
It’s such a shame because the staff are so friendly and helpful but the hotel needs a massive overhaul. We stayed in room 104 which has the kitchen fans right outside the window so don’t expect too much sleep!!! The room and bathroom was very scruffy and in need of a refit, the smoke alarm casing was there but with nothing else and it had a part of the ceiling coming away by the window. The walls are paper thin and outside, looking beyond the dirty window and ledge, on the flat roof was a filthy discarded towel along with bread which is obviously being thrown there from the kitchens for the birds!!!! The linen and towels were clean but that’s about it, the bathroom was looking very tired with grouting missing and mildew round the bath and basin. If the toilet is flushed prior to using the bath/shower then the cold water doesn’t come through until the cistern has been filled. There was stacked furniture clearly visible through a window at reception which made the first appearance seem very shabby and untidy, the lounge area was filthy with dust covered bookshelves and dirty tables although the toilets were spotless, it just doesn’t make sense!!! As I’ve said it’s a shame because the staff were great and the location is perfect for the abundance of restaurants and bars in the area but think twice before staying here.
