One of the best boutique hotels we have ever stayed at in Europe. Katerina and her staff really spoiled us in every respect. We had an amazing suite (Blue suite) on the top floor with a balcony overlooking the winding European Street Below. Situated in the city center, the hotel is great for exploring and day trips throughout the island. One flight up from our room was the most beautiful secret roof top garden with a view of the old Fort and whole town. Our huge room was more like an apartment with really comfortable bed and large sitting area and bathroom. The decor of the room and entire hotel is unique and so interesting. The restaurant staff was incredible. Every morning we had fresh squeezed orange juice and eggs or gourmet waffles cooked fresh and to order. Lingering in the garden restaurant each morning was such a delight it was hard to get motivated to explore the rich history and sights of the city. And the dinner under the amazing watchful eye of Damion was equally wonderful. We are already talking about when we can return!
An excellent hotel with 5*luxury and service. The collection of buildings were styled to enhance the stay, from the old leather factory converted into the indoor and outdoor restaurant, to the mansions with well designed rooms mixing old and new.
We could not have been happier with our stay in the blue suite of the Avli Lounge Apartments. The hospitality, welcome drink and tasting plate of food on arrival was the first sign of a great stay. Our beautifully decorated suite was situated close to, but not in the same building as the reception/restaurant. We had a spacious bathroom with huge hot tub. There was also a very large hot tub on the rooftop above us, which did not create any noise issues. It has a great view over the rooftops of Rethymnon old town. The accommodation is situated right in the heart of the old town and our suite faced the street. The old town is quite lively at night so light sleepers may have an issue but if you are used to staying right in the heart of old town pedestrianised areas in Europe you'll be fine. We slept well here. The staff are really good, friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. I asked them to bring some milk for our fridge so that I could have it in my tea in the room (most top qualilty Greek rooms provide tea and coffee making facilities but usually no milk). They did this and were great to deal with. We ate at the restaurant for dinner and it was fantastic. Next time we are back in Crete we would definitely stay at Avli again.
Beautiful hotel in a perfect location! From the minute we arrived we were impressed with the hospitality at this hotel. Very clean and comfortable rooms. Probably the best breakfast I've ever had! Definitely recommend, make sure you try their restaurants too.
My partner and I visited Avli lounge apartments only a few days ago. We arrived about 7 or 8pm and once figuring out that we needed to park the car in a car park facility (only a 5min walk if that) it was easy from there. We were expecting a car park with the apartment as it was advertised with car park available but it is a public car park you need to pay for. Very safe though. Anyway, on arrival you are met by the lovely Cretan cobble paths and hanging flowers that tumble over the walls and roofs. We ended up walking into the back of the restaurant area but it was no problem. Our hosts were expecting us and soon looked after our luggage and got us a table with a complementary drink and snacks as we filled out our check in information, much joy to us both seeing as we are indeed on holiday. First impressions were impressive and friendly. We had a gorgeous room which was extremely spacious and had a huge bath! We ordered two glasses of red wine from room service who were happy to help us choose something as we wanted to try Cretan wine due to hearing how amazing it was, we were not disappointed! Breakfast was simple but lovely and you really didn't need anymore, better than the huge offerings you get at some places that can just be over eating (don't worry I love food so I'm being fair I promise). We had dinner at both the sister restaurant and the main one to the hotel, I could not recommend it more! Make sure you book the main a la carte one though, it's very popular and for good reason. The town itself is lovely! And everything is in easy walking distance. See my review of Rethymno for more details. Avli staff, thank you for such a nice stay, the atmosphere and attention to detail is friendly, not snobby, classy but casual. For those who don't rise early it's worth noting some rooms do face the street but I am a light sleeper and didn't mind too much when the shops below opened. The rooms black out blinds kept me happy 😊. Hair dryers, robes, slippers and towels all provided.
Really good hotel in the middle of the old town. Found a discounted rate online for £75 a night which made it even better. Huge traditional room with a hot tub in the room - not a separate bathroom, in short one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in. The hotel is beautiful, breakfast is in the main restaurant which is in a courtyard / garden. It feels old and exotic in all the right ways.
The rooms are huge and stunning. We received a room with a large balcony. Very clean. well equipped. Service was beyond any expectation - I can only compare it to having a local good friend going out of his way assist, advise & give hand in any possible way. On our last day we left early and went to a distant beach. So they offered us early breakfast and provided us with sandwiched & drink to take with us which left us speechless. Do not hesitate, this is probably one of the best hotels you've ever been to. Our visit was perfect. The hotel has 2 very good restaurants, 2 of the best in the city, and provided free breakfast. Possible downsides for other, which did not effect our visit at all but might be helpful for others: 1. Minor things in the room were not functional (cable TV, one of the window curtains, one of the lamps), however aside for that the room was very well kept & functional. 2. Sometimes there's nobody at the reception. 3. There is no elevator (acceptable as it is an ancient building, also our luggage was carried by staff when checking in & out. 4. booking.com websites states that the hotel has a pool which is not correct. The hotel has a rooftop Jacuzzi, which we expected to be a hot tub but is actually a cold tub Jacuzzi. 5. Service at breakfast at the restaurant was sometimes very slow. Yet again, these drawbacks were minor for us compared to the amazing rooms & service & perfect location. This will be our first choice whenever we come back to Rethymnon & we gladly give it 5 stars.
We spent the first week of our honeymoon in Avli, staying in the white suite which was absolutely wonderful. Huge suite, super king bed which was SO comfortable, fridge with complimentary drinks, marble bathroom with huge jacuzzi bath. John and Stelios on reception were so helpful, they went above and beyond what you would expect. The breakfasts were the best I'd ever had in any hotel abroad, impeccable service in the most beautiful of surroundings. The rooftop jacuzzi was fabulous and we had the place to ourselves most of the time. Only negatives would be that the jacuzzi in the room took for ever to fill and there was no overhead shower, only a hand held one. Despite this we loved it, would thoroughly recommend it and would make a return visit in the future. Thank you Avli for spoiling us 💞
My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Avli Hotel. Our host, John, greeted us warmly. After 2 nights in the apartment, a 1600's, 2 bedroom apt with a kitchen and balcony, we switched because of noise to the Green room, located on a quiet street that abuts the lovely garden restaurant where an amazing multicourse daily breakfast was served. The hotel has a large mosaic Jacuzzi with beautiful views of Rethymnon and its quaint narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants. John gave us lush beach towels to take several blocks to the beach. Our room was gorgeous with a round Jacuzzi. The refrigerator was stocked with complementary drinks and there was the local grappa type drink in the room. My husband and I had a fabulous cooking class with the chef at the Avli, with John serving as interpreter. We sampled wines and cheeses and salads and stuffed eggplant fried in an angel hair phyllo. We helped to prepare 2 main dishes which we returned to eat after resting in our room. We were surprised to be served a multi course creative dinner. This experience is well worth the price.
We had the best time at Avli Historical Hotel.
