Totally agree with the other reviews. Location perfect outside a large plaza and San Francisco church and monastery . Old City at your doorstep which is a fascinating experience in itself . Food in restaurant is exceptional and we had our anniversary dinner there and it was outstanding. Complimentary high tea each afternoon and lovely staff and beautiful rooms all add to a wonderful experience in Quito . Strongly recommend
I rarely give a five star rating unless the hotel or restaurant is truly outstanding which is without a doubt the case when considering Casa Gangotena. It would put the Ritz to shame. The rooms have high ceilings and are quite large, elegant, and tastefully decorated in a classical european style. The staff is professional, thoughtful, highly competent. The concierge gave excellent advice for touring and sight-seeing. When I needed scales to weigh my luggage (can't go over 50 pounds for the flight to the Galapagos Islands), the staff found scales although there were none in the hotel. The restaurant is one of the best in Quito. We had most of our meals there and greatly enjoyed them all. The fish served was very fresh and had wonderful sauces that did not overpower the flavor of the fish. The wait staff was prompt, attentive without being intrusive. Fresh flowers were everywhere in the hotel, large arrangements of roses and orchids. The entrance to the hotel is through a lovely garden with a fountain. Casa Gangotena is located in Old Town which makes a walking tour very convenient. Don't miss the beautiful panoramic view of Quito from the third floor. Just across the street is the Casa Alabado Museo, the best museum of pre-Columbian art I've ever seen.
We ate Christmas lunch in the restaurant and it was excellent and very good value . The hotel is lovely but it was fully booked so we were unable to stay . The hotel is in a great location in the old town . Security at the hotel is good and staff are friendly .
We have just come back from Quito and, with all our trips out, we wound up staying in 3 different hotels in the capital. Casa Gangotena was definitely the 'jewel in the crown'. It was very expensive compared to other hotels in the area but the price included so many extras that we wound up feeling that it was good value for money. For instance, we arrived at the hotel at around 4pm and we were told that high tea was included. We sat in the most delightful conservatory and had delicious little cakes and masses of well-made tea (and where else can you get a good cup of tea abroad?) There were so many little touches to make your stay perfect, like huge umbrellas at the exit door, but my very favourite things of all were the murals - and the stained glass - in our bathroom. For me, I would have been happy just to fly to Quito and stay here for a few days and then fly home again and, considering the flight was 14 hours each way, you will understand how much i adored this hotel. Staff were very friendly too. In the evening we ate in the restaurant and found the food to be good and reasonably priced. The 'American Breakfast' was the only thing that was less than perfect - the coffee was awful (as it seems to be all over Ecuador) and the croissant, cakes, brioche and rolls were all stodgy. But for me the murals made up for it!
What set's this hotel apart is the service and food. We were really impressed with the restaurant, the food was excellent and the service was great. The only draw back to this hotel is the subway which is currently under construction on it's door step. We actually didn't notice the additional noise; however, I can see how it would be a turn off for other travellers. Once that subway is complete the hotel will only be that much better. The views from the rooftop patio are incredible.
This hotel is a restored mansion right on a main square in the historic district. Service is top notch and the hotel itself is lovely with a nice garden sitting area. Breakfast was delicious as was lunch and dinner. Great location - easy to walk to many sites.
This is a beautiful place, right on a wonderful square. Unfortunately right now, the square itself is torn up while a new metro station is being built underground. But nevertheless, this is a lovely place to stay in central Quito. The rooms are quite elegant and well equipped. Lobby areas are beautiful. Food in the restaurant is delicious, and the bar is an intimate and warm environment. Hotel is packed with original paintings from its beginnings as a private mansion.
Do your self a favor and order a Sangorache! One of the best cocktails I've ever had. Service is really nice here. Food was good not great. But, do NOT miss the cocktails! We didn't stay at the hotel so I can not comment on the rooms. The lobby is beautiful.
A little haven in the middle of old Quito.Beautiful renovated old mansion, quiet gardens and a fountain lead to a solarium where high tea is served in the afternoon.Great service and a beautiful room. The restaurant serves Ecuadorian food for dinner and breakfast is included.Altogether one of the best.
We stayed here twice - before and after our Galapagos adventure. The first nights we were on the top floor with a tremendous view of the Winged Virgin and Old Quito. On our return, we were on a lower floor with an interior courtyard view, The balance of view to room made both experiences equal. In other words, the top room had a great view but was small. The lower room was huge and beautiful but not a lot of view. I think we had the best of both. The breakfast buffets had a variety of offerings but do not be afraid to make a request. The hotel staff and service was outstanding and the location right next to the Plaza de San Francisco was perfect for exploring the historic part of Quito.
