Hotel Fontebella4.0 out of 5.0

We stayed at the Fontebella for one night during the recent heatwave in Italy - it was an unexpected stay after our holiday villa became too hot. We loved the hotel and would recommend it. We drove into Assisi, and found the hotel easily - the parking is on the other side of a small road from the hotel, but we had no problem getting a space. The welcome in reception was one of the nicest we've had. The room itself was clean, cool (thank goodness!) and a little quirky - we had a family room where our bed was downstairs and there was a small circular staircase to an inside balcony where the children slept. It wasn't massive but we really liked it as a family to have the split space whilst still being in the same room. The view from the room was gorgeous. We didn't eat the evening meal at the hotel but enjoyed a lovely breakfast and the hotel were happy for us to park for the rest of the next day so that we could enjoy Assisi somewhat more. Assisi isn't huge anyway, but from the hotel it was a 5 minute walk to the Basilica and 10 minutes or so to the main square. We recommend going up to the Rocca Maggiore at sunset, it's beautiful. The Fontebella is not all mod cons and does not feel like a new hotel - but we thought it was all the better for that with the character. We originally booked because it was available and a low price in August with two days notice, but when we go back we would definitely stay here again!
I/we have stayed at the Fontebella twice a year for three years now, and it is consistently clean, comfortable, peaceful. The rooms are not large, but lovely, and quiet. The breakfast is wonderful, and the dining room, the Frantoio, has a beautiful view of the valley; I suggest at least one sunset supper there. The front desk staff, Andrea, Michele, and Martin are very helpful. A special bonus is the sitting room off from the lobby. Through a short lane you arrive at the main destinations in about 10 minutes on foot.
Beautiful town-- nice hotel with stunning views, comfortable rooms and nice service. Not luxurious or super elegant but more than adequate-- also good location close to every major location in town a big plus
We were very happy staying here and will definitely stay here every time we come back. The staff was outstanding; they were warm, helpful, and courteous. We loved our room, it was roomy and the view was magnificent. We ate twice at the hotel restaurant. The food, staff, atmosphere was excellent. It's close to everything in Assisi. Know that you'll be doing a lot of walking but it's the best way of seeing things. If it sounds as if we like this hotel, you're right!
The room and furnishings could be refurbished but they were clean and came with a great view of the valley. What was outstanding was the level of service of the front desk. Andreas and Pablo were attentive and friendly in giving good suggestions as to how to reach and return from a particular place and making reservations for dinner at restaurants in town. Useful for folks who don't speak Italian and do not have a pre planned, packed itinerary. Dinner at the in-house restaurant was good and reasonably priced (wild boar stew, cod fish salad and grilled sausages for kids). Will return to hotel if rooms are spruced up.
This is my second time in this hotel. It is super well located, near everything in the city center, 5 min walk away the monastery, near a parking place. The breakfast is not good enough, but it is aceptable and American type.
Excellent location and friendly staff, but the pictures of the hotel are slightly misleading. the rooms are very small, need refurbishment, breakfast is miserable with little choices, restaurant has spectacular view indeed, but the food was not very tasty. Englsih si Ok, WiFi is OK as well, private parking helps a lot and it is not expensive
Stayed in low season in one of the quintuple rooms. The hotel is in a nice location in the centre of the town and our room had amazing views over the valley. The room itself was very dated, especially the bathroom, but having said this it still represented good value for money. Breakfast was solid and the staff were helpful. Overall a solid hotel and we would stay here again.
