We have been coming here for a number of years and since it has changed hands things are certainly much better. The receptionists are really helpful and welcoming on our arrival in which we were offered a choice of rooms. Our room was functional, warm ,comfortable and more importantly quite. On the plus side they have their own underground secure parking which is more impressive than most public car parks I have visited. The breakfast is self service but offering an excellent choice of hot and cold foods. Lastly the location is within walking distance of a number of good eating or drinking establishments therefore I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel as a place to stay but it is also less than 10 minutes from the ferry terminal or euro star.
I have to disagree with most of the negative comments about Hotel Meurice posted here. We have just spent one night in Room 41 on the ground floor overlooking the garden and I can report it was quiet, clean, comfortable with high quality bedding, good Wifi, excellent TV reception, functional bathroom with some personal touches (toiletries, hairdryer, shaving mirror) and a separate toilet (not quite up to the standard of the bathroom). We didn’t bother with breakfast - although it would have been good to have had the breakfast options (and prices) explained on checking in. Secure parking is provided for €10 a night and there is good free parking opposite the hotel. We personally liked the eclectic collection of art, fin-de-siecle furniture and cabinets of curios - and we didn’t notice any dust. All in all a good experience at a good price HOWEVER...... I take great exception to being shouted at across the lobby by the imperious receptionist manning the desk in the morning and summoned to the desk to confirm that I am a guest at the hotel and what my room number is, especially when I am in conversation with another guest. This is just bad manners! This same receptionist treated my efforts to speak French very patronisingly “if I speak very slowly do you think you might understand” (in French) and made a major song and dance about my husband needing to stay in the room until 11am even though official check-out time was advertised on my booking as 11.30am. I would have given the hotel a higher score if not for this person. You have obviously been working to improve the rooms - you need to work on the staff’s customer service skills.
We had to spend the night at Calais in order to get the morning ferry to Dover. So we tried again the Hotel we are always stay as it is a classic style Hotel, with big comfortable rooms, big beds and excellent "Hypnos" mattresses ,very clean and usually at a good rate. It is also easy to park outside the Hotel free of charge and it is only 7 minutes drive to the port of Calais.Very central too. Shops and restaurants are 50 meters away. We have stayed more than 6 times so far at Maurice but we never had breakfast usually because we are in a rush but another reason is the cost. 28 Euros for a couple to take breakfast is quite high we think.Except that, we are always happy staying at Maurice because of its friendly and professional staff and of the excellent set up. Stay in this Hotel when in Calais and we hope you will feel the same.
Originally, we had booked for one night prior to using the ferry to go to Dover. It was so comfortable, that we booked two additional nights for when we returned. We walked to the hotel from the train station. Nice walk, which just happens to lead you by the Information office. Pretty handy. Check in was quick and easy. Our room was clean and cheerful. Their beds are the pillow top type. Had the best sleep of our trip. Booking the two extra nights was also an easy experience. Upon our return, we had another room but the same experience. Only flaw there was the dog in the room next door decided to bark for a bit around 22:30. After that issue, no problem. Sightseeing is easy from here. Everything is an easy walk, except the P & O Ferry. For that have them call a taxi. Ours was there on time and took us straight to the ferry for about 12 euro.
We spent one night here before taking the Chunnel train to London. ThIt is an elegant old hotel, well maintained, with comfortable large (for Europe) rooms and a helpful staff. The lobby area and staircase to the upper area are old world and elegant. The bar area and dining area also have a feel of what Calais must have been like in the 40's. The tiny lift to the second floor barely accommodated the two of us and our suitcases, which only added to the hotel's charm. We walked from the Ferry where we dropped our rental car back to the hotel--about a 25 minute walk. It was a brief train ride to the Eurostar station the next morning. There are a number of good restaurants just several blocks away. a wonderful lastnight in France.
Stayed here with my partner and 2 dogs in July and September. Ideal location for the ferry and eurotunnel and wthin easy reach of restaurants and bars. The hotel itself is rather quirky but I found it quite appealing the rooms are spacious and secure parking is available. The bar area is quite cosy. We didn't have breakfast but the room it was served in looked very pleasant. We will definitely stay again on our way through France.
My girlfriend and I stayed here for a one night stop over before driving to Normandy the following day. Parking is available in the road outside of the hotel, if not in their garage which was full when we go there. Hotel reception was manned as soon as we turned up and very friendly with good English. The room was absolutely great, small but not too small by any means. The bathroom was big, well fitted out and clean with a separate toilet which is a plus in most hotel rooms. The hotel is beautiful. A proper classic French establishment with evident long and lustrous history. The best are of the highest quality and comfort!! I'd read this in other reviews and it's definitely not said lightly! We missed breakfast in the morning but the kind lady on reception made us up an 'express breakfast' which she brought to our room. Just a few pastries and coffee. All in all. If you're in Calais or stopping over before travelling forward. I'd won't look any further.
We decided not to rush home & stopped off in Calais - a sadly diminished place where unfortunately few stop on their way home. You can see Meurice is struggling but they try really hard to keep up standards. It's really clean, well run, friendly & the beds are fabulous with lovely fine cotton sheets. The breakfast was good too. They clearly should revamp the place, but everything works..... You can park in the street outside but I managed to squeeze my panel van into the garage as I had to leave a lot of valuable stuff inside overnight.
We stopped at the Meurice twice this summer. As ever, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the staff were friendly, and the choice at breakfast was great. Not many hotels achieve this for this price. Sadly, on our second visit our car was broken into outside the hotel (though nothing was stolen). We've never had a problem before, but perhaps avoid parking behind the Musee des Beaux Arts if there is stuff in your car. The hotel offered to take us to the police station to do the report, but we didn't need to take them up on the offer.
This hotel is quite well situated for the old town and we had no problem parking the car in the street outside. The rooms were a surprise; they are fairly small but well equipped and the beds are really comfortable. The following morning all of us remarked on what a good night's sleep we had had and how great the pillows were - things like that and the quality off the linen mark this hotel out compared to all that we have stayed in in Calais. Will definitely use it again.
