The view from the room was very nice, the room itself was very clean and quiet so I was able to have a peaceful and relaxing stay, though it would have been nice if it were a little more well lit, but overall very satisfactory. The meals provided were delicious, I was happy to be able to sample many different dishes and the service was amazing but the portion was a little too much for me, maybe half of what was provided would’ve been just perfect but nonetheless it was an amazing experience.

Excellent Japanese Inn with flowing hot baths.

The Matsubaya Inn is a traditional Japanese ryokan with both beds and futons and is excellent. It has several hot spring baths, which importantly, have a flow source for freshness. (Some hotels just boil water.) We stayed for three nights and our room (Azami) was very conveniently located close to the best of the hot springs, a spacious one with a view of the city and bay. We could put up an 'occupied' sign and use it privately for 45 min. The kaiseki dinner featured both Japanese beef and fish and was Michelin class. The breakfast was Japanese style with fish, and I missed a Western breakfast with eggs. The facilities are clean and simple and is perfect for adults. There's no game center for kids. The only minor drawback is that the inn is a bit apart from the main attractions. It's a yen 2000 taxi ride to most places, and the bus stop is about 15 min away. We like to walk, so didn't mind that.

Absolutely amazing time at this hotel, the staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The hotel was perfect, loved the onsen and all the food was great

Property is ~5 minute drive from Beppu station. There are male/female baths, plus 3 family baths that do not require a reservation which were great after a long day. We were greeted with green tea and dried fruit upon arrival, and taken to our room where we were able to unpack. Our beds were turned when we returned in the evening, which was very nice. Unfortunately we were unable to participate in dinner as we were watching the rugby game in Oita.

service is 5-star hotel level, very impressive! hotel owner has a good taste, you can find art pieces everywhere. there are 4 private hotsprings indoor and outdoor, the one on second floor is strongly recommended!!! Worth waiting!!! also one fancy public bath with both indoor and outdoor pools. each pool has a different temperature, it's ideal for a pregnant woman like me. since the hotel only have less than 20 rooms, even the public bath is empty most of the time, you will enjoy the privacy and exclusive feeling here. it's located on a small hill, very quiet, easy to get to with a car. not recommended to travelers using public transportation. remember to book the dinner. you may not want to step out of the hotel once you arrive there! super comfy! it's worth every cent of your money
