A lovely old country house and gardens with old furnishing but tastefully decorated to old traditional standards was like going back in time to maybe downtown era We arrived and was greeted by a porter and nothing was too much trouble. We booked a table in the restaurant and pre dinner drinks in the drawing room. Service and choice was 1st class. Everything at dinner was perfect with professional service throughout. A very comfortable nights sleep in a super King bed. Breakfast the next morning was 1st class too. We will return the next time in the York area You certain get what you pay for
We chose this hotel as we were going to York races and it was within walking distance. The staff were friendly, attentive and professional. Our room in the courtyard was clean , and furnished and decorated in period style. we booked in for the evening meal on the second night with two friends also staying over. The meal was expensive but the service was slow. we booked a table for 8.00 and we hadn't had our starters by 9.20.There were apologies and the manager reduced the bill but this was a letdown
Visiting from Australia and booked two single rooms - one each for me and my Mum. Both rooms were on the ground floor in the coach house annexe. I had an adult family of four using the upstairs room as congregation central and could hear every word of their conversation, bathroom visit etc. started getting cranky and then read previous reviews and management responses about accommodating complaints if advised. Rang reception and they happily moved me to an upstairs room - joy and bliss! Dinner was excellent (not intimate, however, but enjoyed listening in on other diner's conversations after traveling so long with the same person). Staff were very friendly, especially the gardeners, and we amused ourselves playing ladies of the manor. Very good remedial massage at the spa but wouldn't recommend the manicure - very pricey and light on compared with standard shopping mall offering.
Middlethorpe Hall Hotel is quite simply fantastic and perhaps one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in globally - it outstrips Hilton, Marriott and Shangri La chain hotels through its simple timeless elegance and charm. Not a hotel for a stag/hen weekend; but for business, family or a romantic weekend it is quite simply superb: the rooms are delightfully furnished, clean and well the Service afforded by the staff is immaculate. Polite, courteous, friendly & warm: and absolutely nothing is too difficult. There is no bar: wow how wonderful it is to ask for a drink and a couple of minutes later ones drinks arrive in a spotless glass accompanied by nibbles in an antique silver bowl. Sipping wonderfully sooth house champagne, with the doors to the gardens open and gazing over an sumptuous green lawn with old cypress trees and listening to the comforting tick of an old clock is very relaxing and makes one feel like the Lord of the Manor. The gardens are just wonderful to wonder through - from herbs to fruit trees to flowers: the design classic in its appearance, but practical as no doubt the chef (awesome) uses the garden to great effect. The restaurant menu is simply stunning: taste, elegance, imagination and mouth waveringly perfection. An outstanding hotel - very reasonably priced: a real gem.
We booked this as a gift for a birthday present along with a day at the races. We arrived early approx 12pm and our rooms were ready and able to check in early with a lovely gentleman, very knowledgeable. Left our car in the car park, tried to get a taxi to the race course only to be told they were fully booked for the next hour, however the hotel must have an arrangement with a local firm and they arranged a taxi within 10 mins! The hotel is less than 1 mile from the race course and is the reason we chose it. We stayed in rooms 7 & 8 on the top floor, up a few flights of stairs, rooms had a pleasant outlook over the large grounds, however it did remind me of staying at my nana's house but by no means is that a bad thing! Bed was big and very comfortable. We didn't stay for an evening meal but had drinks in the bar, for a small bar they have a big selection (not much lager though), breakfast the next morning was lovely, and well presented. All staff we met were pleasant and friendly nothing was too much trouble. Overall its not a lively hotel maybe suited more to a older clientele but i would certainly recommend it and return.
What better excuse to visit Middlethorpe Hall than for Julie's birthday on the first Sunday of July - not that an excuse is needed really. We've been coming to Middlethorpe Hall ever since it became a hotel many, many years ago and every year we like to return to see if the excellent service, ambiance, rooms and food live up to nostalgic memories of the past. Just the sight of the wonderful building as you come round the corner is enough to set your pulse racing in anticipation and then parking outside the main entrance to check in and to be immediately welcomed by the reception staff starts everything off in the best possible way. M.Chatard the GM is on hand to add his welcome and advise that a courtyard room has been selected with two bathrooms and he hopes Julie enjoys her birthday dinner in the restaurant. The room is wonderfully airy and comfortable - another welcoming factor is M.Chatard's personal card to make you feel really at home, and we do! Dinner is, for us, a highlight, the Maitre D welcomes us in the Drawing Room a familiar and friendly face from previous visits - you know what makes this place so special is that staff tend to stay at Middlethorpe Hall and therefore instinctively know who you are and how to serve you from their previous experience. We choose the Gourmet Tasting Menu and accompanying wine - Julie is worried she might not enjoy the rabbit dish; but she need not worry because it is delicious as is the whole range of courses expertly cooked and executed as well as served in a friendly but professional way. Dinner is a great success - leaving time to walk around the beautiful gardens, admire the various planted areas and buy a Hosta at the same time; bed beckons. As always breakfast is equally enjoyable and a great start to the day, the cooked breakfast served at your table is the only way to enjoy breakfast whilst away. All too soon the stay has finished and a long trip home back down to the New Forest beckons, but fully refreshed from the stay at Middlethorpe Hall means the journey is not so bad AND the promise of a return visit next year helps. So all-in-all the highest standards have not only been maintained but we think even bettered, if that is possible - so congratulations all round, if you find yourself planning a trip to York don't forget to put Middlethorpe Hall on your TO VISIT list, you won't be disappointed and will leave fully refreshed.
A good example of old school Hotel with attentive staff and beautiful grounds. Let down by grossly inadequate tiny lift - apparently a dumb waiter in a former life (yes, seriously) and hopelessly old fashioned, tiny bathroom. Not just unsuitable for disabled, but also for anything other than the fittest of contortionists. First class dining.
Lovely hotel with. beautiful gardens. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. The spa facilities are excellent. We stayed for 2 nights and found it very relaxing. The room in the courtyard was peaceful and very comfortable.
Stayed for nights in two rooms, one courtyard and one main house. The room in the courtyard was picture postcard cottage bedroom, so pretty.I thought it might have been cold for some reason but it was so cosy and warm. The room in the main house was gorgeous. I couldn't believe I was staying in a National Trust House. I have visited so many, you know where they have a rope line that you can't step over, well in every room it was like someone invited you to step over the rope and back in time and sit in the beautiful drawing room, or library and be part of that world. The stone floor in the entrance hall, the staircase and hall, the breakfast room(breakfast was delicious), I loved it all. Wait to you see the cutest gym in the entire world and when you go to the pool, it's like being at a thirties pool party or something, it's beautiful. The spa and pool are in 2 Edwardian cottages so you start to relax at the gate, just looking at them. The amenities and changing room are all modern and well thought out inside however so you have the best of both worlds. The pool was the perfect depth and size, with comfortable loungers at the side and a small whirlpool also and steam room and sauna. Best of all, to match the splendour of the house and beautiful gardens is the excellent staff.I am not a fan of pretentions or false stuffiness or snobishness and some places that's what you get but if you are really high class you don't have to behave in that way, and that is what you get at Middlethorpe, true class. The staff are professional and full of old fashioned service and respect but remain warm and friendly. To mention a few, Robin helped us a couple of times and was a real gent. Matt was very pleasant, vive la France, Damian and Adam were very helpful and friendly and Ellie was a sweetheart at reception and helped me any questions. If you are going soon , you will have a wonderful relaxing time, I am jealous....
Beautiful hotel, very comfortable and a terrace with lovely countryside views. Most helpful and friendly staff. Good swimming pool and spa. The food is extremely good. Expensive but generally good value for the quality offered. We brought our dog and were accommodated in one of the cottages which was charming with a lovely garden.
