We were supposed to head back to Sydney but the Jetstar called us to tell us that our flight was delayed and cancelled till the next day. We had nowhere to stay and we looked for the most reasonable price and we found Oaks on Collins! My partner had previously stayed at this hotel before and he said it was great! Upon arrival, they upgraded us (with no charge!) and we really enjoyed our one night and wished we stayed more! Thank you!
This hotel was not as advertised. When my partner and I were looking for somewhere to stay for a romantic getaway in Melbourne for a long weekend, we wanted somewhere central and nice. The Oaks on Collins said that it was a four and half stars venue and it had awesome pictures. It seemed to have great reviews. When we arrived we realised how inaccurate that was. At first we were both upset, so I spoke to reception and they changed our room. However, although it was better it still wasn't what we had thought we were paying for. The room did not reflect the pictures (I have uploaded the pictures for you to see – White furniture photo is from the website, the rest are my own images – please excuse the mess!). In the pictures there were nice luxe looking furniture with a comfortable layout. In reality the furniture looked like bad and cheap Ikea furniture. The layout was ridiculous as the couch did not face the tv in anyway. And the nice bar that my partner and I had planned to have a few drinks at before heading out to try some of Melbourne’s amazing food, was non-existent. I think the worst thing about this place was the bathroom. In a four and a half star venue I expect to have a nice bathroom. This bathroom was tiny, I have seen bigger bathrooms in hostels in Hing Kong. But the worst part was that the flimsy glass wall that separated the toilet from the bedroom was only 30 centimetres from the bed. Which meant that there was absolutely NO privacy…. Not very romantic. The walls were glass so when my partner or I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, turning on the light to would wake the other person up. The room is big enough that they could find another configuration. When I mentioned the bathroom to the front desk, the service staff mentioned that it was because it's an old building. Considering some the other four and half star venues I have stayed at, in Melbourne are in much older buildings and have decent bathrooms, I think this was an excuse. It is clear that a cheap renovation job was done with little thought to customer comfort. On Saturday night, my partner came down with the flu so we decided to stay in and order room service. I had already noted that there were no forks in the little kitchenette but assumed that room service would bring new ones with our meal. They didn’t, and when I asked for some they just bought forks and ONE napkin, although we had ordered two meals. Now you may think I am being petty, but we paid for a four and half star venue…. This is not for and a half star service. In all honesty I do have to say that the steak was perfectly cooked – very delicious. When we finished our meal, I put the tray outside the door…. Where it stayed until Sunday evening. Seriously, not joking, I stepped over it on my way out for coffee the next morning! I travel a lot. For work and for pleasure. This is the first time I have considered checking out and going some where else. If my partner hadn't been sick, we would have. I stay in a lot of different places in different price ranges. What I am upset about with this venue is the misrepresentation of the space. This was not a four and half star venue, it is overpriced. At best it is a three and half star venue, and then only because the staff were awesome and lovely despite me being in a bad mood. Several times when I was annoyed at the venue they managed to cheer me up. The furnishings were no better than a 3 star venue – they had a complete lack of attention to detail, I have also uploaded a picture of the furnishings in our room – note the repeated print. If you are advertising yourself as a four and a half star venue, you should be able to get these little things right. The thing that annoyed me most was the bathroom - it was so small and so close to the bed. I wouldn’t recommend you stay here, especially at the price they are charging. This is not four and a half stars.
This is our second time staying at Oaks on Collins. The staff are very helpful and we were very impressed with our free of charge upgrade by Ahmed. Our room was outstanding and we will definitely be back and recommending to all of our friends ! Till next time, thank you!!
Very affordable hotel, not many two apartments that have two queen beds for under $200 a night. Great location and the tram straight out the door makes the city very accessible. Rooms are large and clean. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance.
We initially booked the Studio for 8 nights but paid for an upgrade upon arrival to the Executive Studio and it was well worth it as the upgraded room came with a balcony. Check in was efficient and our request to upgrade was handled professionally. The room layout was comfortable and cosy and there were kitchen hobs, a built in oven and a nice counter top to place all our stuff/groceries. I was particularly pleased with the bed as i do have a bad back but the bed was perfect, not too soft and not too hard (but then again this is pretty subjective due to individual preference). Housekeeping did a pretty good job, no complains there. As per our last stay here, the only gripe we had was the oddly small-ish sink in the bathroom (water splashing onto the floor was inevitable) and the AC was a bit wonky (too hot then too cold) just a minor annoyance. Taking the tram around was a breeze as there are 2 tram stops (Stop 3 and Stop 4 I believe) within a 3 minute walk from the hotel. Certainly looking forward to our next stay.
We enjoyed our stay here, it was very easy to walk everywhere and the rooms were nice and clean. Central location and staff were very helpful. The room was comfortable and perfect for a short stay. We will stay here again when we come back
I have just spent 3 night stay at the Oaks on Collins in Melbourne Being in a prime location to shop and eat I'm the CBD of Melbourne, you will save on taxi and tram costs, as it only a short walk to get most places The room is comfortable, plenty of room and fantastic amenities, the bed is right up there on the good sleep scale The only thing I found a little disappointing was the evening room service meal, avoid if you are after a good meal, there is plenty of restaurants around to enjoy the fine food of Melbourne I will be staying here again
Stayed 4 nights. Enjoyed my stay. Nice clean room, comfortable bed. Serviced daily. Good location, close to Southern Cross station and Bourke St. I would definitely stay here again. Only 30mins free wifi after that have to pay.
Stayed there for 1 week. Booked rooftop balcony room. Room was on 19th floor but get this ... the lift ends at floor 18! We lugged our bags up stairs for one floor. Room contain random furniture thrown together. No wardrobe space. Bathroom has shower curtain that only goes 2/3rds the way down so the whole place gets soaked. Bathroom sink is TINY - no space to put anything! Bed hard. Needs a good clean. Reception displays breakfast for $17. Went to restaurant on 1st floor but they said we had to go back to reception and get a card???? Went back down, lined up, got our card and eventually sat down for breakfast. Freezing cold and old buffet at 0930 on a Saturday. We wanted to go to Queen Vic Markets so we asked the "concierge" - he didn't know how to get there! The place just doesn't care ... check in, pay and then good luck! Felt so disrespected.
I was in Melbourne for a conference and this hotel provided an excellent, cost effective option. The down side was that it was in a quieter part of the inner city and a bit of a hike to the nightlife. But if you like a quiet night in ... I visited the breakfast buffet one morning and it was of a good standard for the price, There's also a food court behind reception that provides great options for freshly squeezed juices, as well as cheap breakfasts and lunches.
