This hotel is full of character and style. My room was very comfortable. Great bar with good choice of beers. My evening meal was excellent, and breakfast was definitely what the doctor ordered! The staff were all friendly and helpful. The hotel is in the centre of the town. Parking was behind the hotel- so no long hike with bags etc. All in all - what was there not to like?
Our group of 26 stayed at the Castle & Ball in June of 2017 and we wished we could have stayed every night at the Castle & Ball. The front desk was helpful from check-in, to helping some of our guests check-in for their flights on their cell phone on departure. Our large group had several meals together where the food was above what we had elsewhere on tour. My room, #12, was up a few narrow flights, which made my large suitcase somewhat cumbersome to bring up, but that was the only annoyance. There was a spacious bedroom that looked over a courtyard, lots of hot water and a comfy, clean bed. The bar in the lobby was staffed by a friendly, efficient bar keep, where locals with their dogs people the lobby and mingled with our group. The internet connection was excellent and sight seeing along the High street was an added bonus. I will be back to Castle & Ball with friends and family.
we returned to this pub and thoroughly enjoyed lunch with two friends. We were seated in the front bar area by 12noon- it soon got busy. Restaurant waiter service is also available but we prefer to order at the bar. Three of us had the Ultimate fish and chips and one had the salmon with roast vegetables- all delicious and washed down with a bottle of Chilean Savinguon blanc. prompt service and affordable.
Stayed 3 nights whilst exploring Avebury, Salisbury and a couple of historic sites. Our second visit and unlikely to be the last. We were greeted by the Asst. Manager who provided a warm welcome and directed us to a superior room (15) on the first floor. This overlooked the v. wide and busy Marlborough High Street but there was little noise and glazing very effective. Large clean room, well decorated and furnished, contained v. comfortable bed and plenty of storage space. Bathroom, also v. clean, was relatively modern and had full handbasin unit with more than adequate space for toilet bags (often absent in these old inns). Bath and shower worked well and plentiful hot water. Nice towels although towel rail did not heat up whilst we were there. This old coaching inn is a bit of a rabbit warren and guests need to appreciate the quirky stairs and creaking floorboards as part of the overall attraction. Food follows the standard O.E.Inn (Greene King) menu, is reasonably priced and generally cooked to order. Also a wide variety of other restaurants nearby to suit all tastes e.g. from Prezzo's to Rick Stein! At breakfast we favour salmon or eggs royale rather than traditional bacon & eggs and were not disappointed as food came hot and individually cooked. Kitchen was busy with customers but coped well and we did not wait too long despite the pressure on just two waitresses. The small team seemed friendly and cheerful and the receptionist was particularly helpful in advising us on getting to and from Salisbury by bus. We've taken advantage of many Old English Inn offers in the past and Castle & Ball is a fine example that we really enjoyed and we'll be back.
Stayed for one night b&b for an old school reunion with a group of 5. Staff were very friendly, drinks were good and rooms and bed large and comfortable. We didn't have dinner here but breakfast was good, with excellent service. Hotel was a bit tired but good value.
We stayed here 2nd and 3rd June '17. We paid for a superior room. It was large with a comfortable bed and large TV. We had dinner first night in the hotel which was fine, our waitress was Natasha who was lovely and very good at her job. 1st breakfast came with no eggs so sent back, when returned, food was luke warm as it was not heated up while eggs were cooked. Next day breakfast was o.k. Right in the town centre a good hotel to stay in. We would stay here again if we visited the area.
Went with friends. Good attentive service by all staff. Expected basic food but was very surprised by the good quality food provided. Had the beef rib which was great, all the party thoroughly enjoyed the meals.
The good points free parking Clean bed sheets and towels and that's where it ends I feel the hotel is over priced , we paid £120 for BB , £60 would have been more a fair price for this stay , we stayed in room 34 Very steep wobble stairs , Carpets and hand raills all needing a good clean , all paintwork needs cleaning and repainting . Did not eat dinner thank goodness as breakfast was an experience So all the staff are very young , untrained and have no idea of customer service ( not there fault) Breakfast food quality was poor and cold so left most of it Coffee took 15 mins to arrive service was slow and poor , one waitress had a argument with the table next to us about how long they had waited , they need some one trained to train them all Hotel reception , no customer service skills at all , on check out never asked how our stay was or if every thing was ok , not sure if he is the manager owner ? But he needs training . Drinks at the bar , no correct glasses , all need a good clean
It's such a shame that such a lovely pub that does good food NEVER has enough staff on. Last night 1 guy, so slow I could have cried, serving behind the bar. It's always like this though,I was in a queue of 7!!!!! Then another guy came along to help who spoke to customers as if they were his hooded mates from the park!!! I am not his mate, respect please young man!! Please get more staff behind the bar!!!!!!! Please!!!!!!!!
Took my Aussie relatives to Wiltshire to see Avebury Manor and Wadworths Brewery. This hotel was excellent. Nice staff, really good rooms and a great breakfast to start the day. We ate dinner there and it was of good quality. We would come back.
