We checked in last Friday to a 'deluxe' room... not sure what deluxe means to the management of The Castle & Ball but it's not the same as mine. We had room 4 over the main bar... Noisy, not very clean and lacked any kind of hint of 'deluxe'! I went to see if they had another room that was a bit better but particularly not over the very busy bar and was told, no madame the hotel is full and we cannot move you... The room was not cheap at £135 per night... Anyway we got on with our evening only to wake the following morning to no hot water and to be told we needed to to go to another room if we wanted a shower!!! I have had some strange situations in my time but this seemed more Faulty Towers than deluxe country hotel! Interestingly, we had our shower in room 36, 2 floors above and it had not been used over night, so they did have a room they could have moved us to, they just chose not to! No hint of a refund was offered and we had our breakfast somewhere else thank goodness... My son will be living in Marlborough for the next year or so, but I will not be staying here when we visit... all round very disappointing...
Stayed for two nights. Family trip. When we got there we asked about a room with the ball outside but them rooms were not available. I had not entered the room but I knew already there was something wrong and when I went in it smelled of urine. The staff never changed the towels. The car park was good.
We love it at the Castle & Ball we have stayed there many times, we took two of the kiddies just so they could find out why we love English inns so much, they really liked it there Thomas's words "It's like a home from home" He's 9.. so a great review from him and Abbie really liked the food and the bed she had so all very good thanks to Jim, Claire, Natasha, Thomas and the rest of the staff for another wonderful stay Cheryl & Chris x
dated but adequate hotel but we found the way it was run below standard expected - bar closed about ten thirty one night when all our party returned from a tour game. Although one of the management offered to rectify the situation we had similar problems the following night with a last minute food order . The staff didnt seem to be aware of our situation but nowadays late food and drink shouldnt be too difficult to get in a hotel ! Service at Breakfast was adequate but disorganised slow service and occasional wrong orders - not the young staff's fault probably more due to lack of leadershipp
The Castle & Ball hotel in Marlborough’s main market square is part of the Old English Inns Group and it continues the company’s style of menu and décor – big, bustling and family oriented; dogs and children friendly. There is a restricted menu with, presumably, smaller portions for £4.99 but otherwise the main menu is standard pub grub. On our visit on a Thursday lunchtime the service was slow but the food beautifully cooked. There is very difficult disabled access to the main restaurant area so be sure to ask for a table in the bar area if booking. However, the main access at the front also had 3 steps up so access is restricted.
We hadn't visited Marlborough before and picked this hotel as it was very central. All the staff were lovely, very helpful. However the hotel needs a good refurb. Our room was right at the top of the building, a long way up twisty staircases, if you were elderly or disabled you would have struggled. The room was OK but small, bed was comfy, only a very small window letting in light so needed the light on to read. At £105 I think the price a bit steep for the standard given.
The hotel is right in the middle of the high street so easy walking around the town. The service at the hotel was fantastic special mention to Clare who was a star. The rooms have all amenities and are lovely and clean, as the hotel is so old the quirkiness adds to the experience, we had a room overlooking the Main Street but we had no noise disturbance at all. Would recommend staying if visiting the area.
Had taken the opportunity of good weather to visit Marlborough agai, one of our favourite little Market Towns. Popped in to The Castle and Ball as it's a member of a favourite food franchise chain of typical English eatery pubs. Went for simple Fish and chips with garden peas - nothing posh, just cheap menu shopping trip food. Very good with larger quantities of chips and peas than sister locations near Oxford. Fish was excellent, not too dry and nice cripsy batter. Pleasant staff, fast efficient service... spot on guys.
The Hotel is in a superb position right in the centre of Marlborough and there is free parking at the back. It is an old building and tired in places but the two rooms we stayed in were clean and comfortable. Room 32 on the top floor has the smallest bathroom I have ever been in, with not even room for a toilet roll holder on the wall. The gentleman on the reception desk was very professional and helpful and facitiltated us in staying an extra night. Breakfast on the first day was good. However it wasn't on the second morning. It took 15 minutes to take our order and then a further 35minutes for the cooked breakfast to arrive. When I complained about the wait I was told all food was freshly cooked and if all residents came down together then there would be a wait. I dont know how they manage when the restaurant and all the tables in the pub are full. The food isn't all freshly cooked the bacon when it came was well done and hard , it had been around for some time and I am sure the sausages , tomatoes etc... were already prepared so it was only the eggs that needed to be cooked. All this I might have accepted but the waitress decided to have an argument with me in front of other guests, about the time we had been waiting, quoting the time the order went through the till , not the actual time we waited!! The hotel was full and this was a Saturday and maybe they needed more staff in the kitchen. Having enjoyed previous visits to the hotel I was disappointed. I like the hotel and its querkiness, it has a fabulous position and some excellent staff its a pity about breakfast!
Called in for a coffee break before some shopping, intending to return for lunch. As it happens we both ordered a hot chocolate. Eventually this was served...lukewarm and only half a cupful. For this we were charged just under £6 ! Nope Castle and Ball you have lost our custom now. We are local, so such a shame 😿
