Hotel Campanile Angers Ouest - Beaucouzé3.0 out of 5.0

I have stayed in many Camoaniles over the years, some bad some not so bad. This was just an average. The best thing was the friendly receptionist on the desk. She was very smiley and was happy for me to practice my French without being condescending. So much for the advertised selection of biscuits.....there weren't any!!!!
I was on a business trip which involved visiting several cities in North west France. I chose Angers as it was central to where I wanted to go, and chose Campanile Angers Ouest - Beaucouzé as it was easily accessible from the motorway. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have checked the reviews on Tripadvisor before I set off!! The good bits: the people at reception, without exception were friendly and did their best to help. I found my room quickly. The bed was comfortable. The bad bits: There were a lot of issues with the accommodation. * The wifi signal was very weak and I kept losing the signal. Even going to reception meant an improvement, but the signal was very slow. * When you look at the bedroom images provided by the hotel, you would expect electric sockets beside each bed and at the table near the window. There is just a single socket I could see in the whole room, plus another one in the bathroom. It would be hard to do some work - keeping a phone and laptop charged - in this situation. * The TV is screwed to the table, taking up a lot of the space. I imagine Campanile must have had TVs taken in the past for them to take this action. Surely the TV could have been fastened to the wall. * The images provided by the hotel show a table light, which would have been very convenient. However, the light in the room is behind you when you are working at the table. * There is only one single chair in the whole room. When two people are working on something. This is not convenient. I did get another chair from reception, but it does seem strange that a twin room has only a single chair. * Generally the room left a lot to be desired in its appearance. The chipboard shelf in the bathroom was flaking. The floor was heavy-duty, very unattractive brown lino which has seen better days. * The rooms have "paper-thin" walls so I could clearly hear other guests using the toilet, talking, and moving around. Fortunately for me none of these guests stayed up late when I was there. * I travel around a lot and stay in hotels 2 or 3 days most weeks of the year. This is the first (and probably the last) time I will stay at a Campanile hotel until I read feedback suggesting there has been a big improvement. When you travel on business you do not want to be wasting your time (and the company's money) on sorting out basic stuff. * I do not like to write a bad review of a place, as I know the people working in the hotel have a hard job, and it makes it seem I do not appreciate the work they do. Please understand this review is directed at the people who have allowed this hotel to deteriorate to a standard where I could not recommend anyone to use it, if they were in the area. * Finally, the leaflet in the room advised me that I should get the code for the hotel car park from reception. There is no gate on the car park. Anyone can come and go as they wish. Someone attempted to steal my car, but they were foiled by the alarm. I could not get the number of the car the thieves were using, as they drove off immediately they heard the alarm.
We were transferred to this hotel after a disasterous experience with the Campanile Le Mans and we stayed 1 night as we wanted to explore Angers for a couple of days. The hotel itself is billed as a 3* but I would say it is more like a 1*. It is currently being refurbished but this is work in progress and we had builders on site round the clock. The reception and restaurant area look like they've had a revamp already and looked promising enough but the room we stayed in sadly was not refurbished and was very 80s. Still, it was clean and not nearly as grotty as the Campanile Le Mans, so we decided to stay the night. Which was an experience. The walls must be made of paper because we stayed awake most of the night listening to the loud snores of the old boy next door. When we did eventually drift off to sleep, we were awoken in the early hours by a combination of delivery trucks beeping and a dog barking incessantly. The hotel is effectively an overnight motorway stop, so if you need somewhere to bed down for the night whilst on the road then you might want to consider this. Otherwise avoid at all costs as it's not a good hotel from which to explore Angers. It's 10 minute drive to Angers, but in rush hour traffic in a foreign country it's not the most fun drive in, and then there's the issue of parking. I'm sure these motel like places serve their purposes but we couldn't wait to get out and wouldn't stay in a Campanile ever again. For £10-20 more per night (per room), you can get much better hotels in France and they are well worth paying extra for. Note: if you do stay here, the restuarant next door with the red umbrellas (a grill type place) served very good food complete with lovely fresh bread.
