I stay at the Gateway Hotel multiple times each year on business. The staff is very friendly and focused on serving their guests. The rooms, facilities and grounds are kept clean and in good order. If an issue arises it is resolved in short order. Best hotel in Madurai by far.
On hilltop outside and overlooking city, with villas scattered around main hotel block, plus peacocks and monkeys to add to old world charm. Fitness, encouraged by early morning activities, pool and spa, comes in useful when climbing up and down steep paths to and from picturesque restaurant: but ideal and comfortable centre to stay for visit to historic local sights.
Although the rooms are a little tired the whole property is beautifully laid out and the rooms are in colonial blocks surrounded by greenery and with views over Madurai that are simply stunning! Even the goprams of the Meenakshi temple are visible. The dining room is atmospheric and has a lovely terrace and the food offered very good choices. An early morning bird watch at 6.30 am is available from the pool attendant who knew just where to look for owls, myna birds and a tree parrot! The old style clubhouse bar with a terrace is charming and the peacocks come to visit!
Stayed with Mother in Dec 2017 for two nights. Been there before, multiple times. Efforts taken to retain the old charm with modern facilities is huge. There have been minor hiccups in terms of air-conditioning, else it was great ambience, food & service. I also used the Spa (Nalan) for massages for both of us , which was also great. Great Ambience in rooms, restaurant. Old charm still retained with good efforts.
This hotel is a part of the Taj group of hotels. Up on the top of a hill overlooking the city is this beautiful expansive old hotel. Peacocks strolling the grounds, beautiful trees, birds chirping foster an enchanting environment. My room looked into a small and clean and well maintained pool. My suite had hardwood floors a bay window are and old but well maintained furniture. The beds were so so. Having said that I slept like a rock. Staff were wonderful and supportive. Breakfast was healthy and had a lot of variety and home made yougert as I have come to expect. There is a gift shop and a lady tailor who promised to make a custom top in 1 day. I did not like the feel of the fabric but there were some beautiful designs. I look a yum yum back to the hotel from the central temple and it was only 200 rupies. Two thumbs up for this beautiful place.
I just can't understand people who moan about minor details such as period style toilets, it's all about the overall ambience, and this place has it by the bucket load ! It would make a great film set for days of the Raj epics. We had two days here as part of a Newmarket tour, I had the whole upper floor balcony to myself, enjoying the bird and butterfly wildlife, and was ready for a rest as I was really ill , the management got doctors from the nearby hospital to see me very speedily, and I had my prescriptions by mid day.
Awesome service with very friendly and service oriented staff. Unique compound on top of hill with lushly green landscape made my stay very comfortable, calm and peaceful. One of the best Indian food restaurant with plenty of local and international choices from the menu
We stayed here for one night as part of a private tour, in room 48. This is a hard place to review, as although we didn’t particularly like it, we accept it is probably the nicest and quietest place in Madurai! Probably really a 3.5 review, then. First, the positives: the hotel is centred round an old colonial-type building on top of a small hill, with nice grounds and a nice view over the city of Madurai. The accommodation was in various modern blocks scattered round the grounds. There was a large pool and a spa. The hotel was quiet, especially welcome considering the chaos that is Madurai! So why did we not really like it? The hotel had a general feeling of neglect and lacked modernisation. The toilet next to reception was quite grotty and gave a really bad first impression. The reception area was small, and there was a tv on in the bar area which spoilt the ambiance there. The carpets were frayed and faded in the steps leading to the reception. Our room was reasonably sized with wooden flooring and decently air con, but no balcony or outside space. The taps in the bathroom again looked past their best. During the day the hotel was very quiet as presumably most people were out on a tour. The map given by the hotel was useless, and the restaurant area “vista” was not easy to find. Staff were pleasant enough but not especially attentive by the standards of other hotels we visited. The inside of the restaurant was very cold (air con on too strong) and had a buffet aimed at tour groups. We ate a la carte and the food was reasonable and the view from the veranda was nice with a cooling breeze. Overall a reasonable average place for a short stay in probably the nicest hotel in town, but a long way from the highest standards and rather surprising that it is part of the Taj group of smart hotels.
Everything was perfect since checkin the staff was very helpfull and kind, All muito stay was amazing! The room is perfect, clean, silent, the bathroom perfect too, the shower is top! I really Love my experience !!
Beautiful hotel with spacious comfortable, spacious rooms, and highly efficient, gracious staff. Central building is an old mansion form the Raj, with the newer buildings that fit beautifully into the landscape and mood. Hilltop location with lovely views over the city from the rooms.
