A very average hotel in many ways. Knew that it was situated the wrong side of the road away from coast, so unless windows are closed, there is a lot of traffic noise. The dining room is very small for the number of guests & seemed cluttered, in spite of the two set dining times. The buffet food choice was also disappointing for the 4* rating. For us, the best feature of the hotel was the Indoor pool which is open to the garden, very warm with powerful jets along one side. Very relaxing after a long walk. We also liked the roof top area with seating & shower from where the sea can be viewed. All the staff were friendly & helpful and there was pleasant evening entertainment in the bar area which has comfortable seating.
We were with a group and we liked most aspects of this hotel. Plus points were the indoor swimming pool, the sauna, the friendly staff, the good food with much variety and the excellent location . The problems we had were with the room which was rather small and pokey. There was a small balcony and we could just see the sea. There was a bad smell from the bathroom which we reported but it did not improve. We asked for air freshener which did not arrive. Apart from that the hotel is fine.
We spent a week there March 2018 with Riviera. Food was very good (buffet style) and dining room large and airy with excellent views over the bay. Rooms spacious and spotlessly clean. All staff were helpful, well turned-out and efficient. No complaints whatsoever. A really relaxing and enjoyable break.
Food was very good although dining room was a bit crowded at breakfast, 2 sittings at dinner alleviated this problem, also good to have allocated table for dinner. Room at front with sea view, lovely and spacious, but could be noisy at late evening with traffic, especially very noisy motor cycles.. Cleaning very good and thorough.
I stayed here for a week with a group from the UK. good points about the hotel All staff were friendly and very helpful. the bathroom was large and very clean, Room median size for 1 with large firm good bed, all surfaces were clean except the floor with was very dusty. A/C in room quiet, A/C outside very nosey.Road a back of the hotel was all so very nosey 7.30am to 10.45 pm. bar service very good with a very happy barman. On the downside, a service room next to my room (No 337second floor) nosey at times, also marked as fire escape on escape plan but the door marked NOENTRY.Food could have been better with more imagination, not a 4*hotel.
Third visit 6 weeks this time, great. The hotel in my opinion is the cleanest I have been in the food was good the rooms are comfortable the cleaning room staff are excellent and that goes for all the staff, the food was very good the comments I heard was of the same opinion. On. reading some of the negative comments it is pathetic blaming the hotel because someone banged the door, the person from Plymouth takes the biscuit, can't even take his own luggage to his room get a life, to sum up great hotel good food great staff to all the moaners there is an old saying don't tell us tell the cook, if you have a problem stop moaning tell the the management happy holidays. lovely hotel, good check in on arrival, quick and efficient receptionists. The room that was allocated when we arrived was not what I requested,I wanted high floor and garden view, got first floor sea view. [this was due to work being done to gardens at the rear] so it turned out ok. the beds were very comfortable.bathroom ok shower and a bath which my wife enjoyed. The restaurant ok. food ,good choice, second week repeated from 1st week. could have had some sauces or gravy for the hot meals chicken beef etc.would definitely recomend this hotel, great location for funchal centre.
I stayed here for a week with a group from UK. The good points about the hotel: **The staff were friendly and helpful. **The cleanliness was brilliant **The bed was fairly comfortable. **The position of the hotel was great - walkable to Funchal cit centre and to the Lido area the other way. **The jacuzzi **The downstairs - the lounge area - was very modern and easy on the eye. The not so good points about the hotel. **I knew from previous reviews that I had to ask for a kettle - which I got and I was thankful for that but ..... should I have to find out about it in reviews before I went? **The swimming pool looks great but it isn't deep anywhere, so don't expect to be able to swim lengths. **I had to pay for a key to use the safe. **The bedroom furniture was rather old and ill-designed. Couldn't have a long dress hanging in the wardrobe because that's where the fridge was! The lighting in the bedroom was not bright - it was OK for resting but not for you when you need a good light. **The buffet area was cramped. There were two sittings and I am not used to eating at 8pm. **The food was not good at all - breakfast and dinner. There was no imagination, no style - same old, same old. Boring. It was no good looking at the menu in the lift because it didn't bear any resemblance to what was served up. 2 soups were always on the menu and never were there two soups to choose between. I mentioned it and it seems the office doesn't communicate with the kitchen. Food was definitely NOT 4*. More like 2* **One table in the restaurant always had a "reserved" notice on it. I thought it was for someone with a wheelchair. I saw it used once only and I presume he was the manager. He didn't engage with the staff nor the holiday makers. Not a friendly attitude
Good Points : excellent location, just 8 minutes walk into the centre of Funchal and a few minutes walk from the hotel zone with restaurants, hotels and cafes; 3 buses running into the town; extensive and comfortable lounge with a bar, overloooking the terrace and pool; indoor heated and outdoor pools; great choice of food at breaskfast - hot, cold, savoury, sweet and gluten free on request; tasty buffet evening meals with some freshly cooked on request; comfortable beds, hairdryer, walk-in shower, air-conditioning; friendly, helpful staff. Negative points : some evening meals lacked enough seasoning and were tepid in temperature (buffet style); dust on the base of the wardrobe, building works at the rear (but not too noisy).
We came here with Jet 2 in 2016 and enjoyed it so much that we decided to stay for 2 weeks this year. The hotel is everything we wanted- extremely friendly and helpful staff throughout! We had Bed and Breakfast which was very good in quantity and variety but similar most days. A good breakfast and we only needed 2 meals a day. Bar prices reasonable compared with UK and very friendly, also hot and cold snacks at the bar. As is our style, we went out to local restaurants most evenings but did eat in the restaurant on Valentines night (a special offer of Dinner, a bottle of wine (effectively 40 Euros for 2 people and a most enjoyable evening) and a discounted massage each all for 100 Euros- very good. We also ate in the restaurant for 2 people with bottle of wine on two other nights when the rain was too heavy to go out! These meals cost £36 for 2 with the wine and were varied and well prepared, buffet type meal! Overall a wonderful holiday in a lovely hotel in February- 12 days of cloudy sun at 19 degrees C and only 2 days of rain, but variable and may not always be quite so pleasant. Adults only hotel which is well worthwhile. 15-20 minutes walk from town and harbour. Varied entertainment in the lounge many evenings. Most rooms have a fridge which used to be a minibar and this is quite useful. Last year we had a room over the lounge area and there was a little evening noise from the entertainment below, but this generally finishes around 22.00 or soon after. We upgraded to superior room, slightly larger on ground floor facing the pool. The beds were extremely comfortable and we got a good nights sleep every night. Small gymn, jacuzzi and massage suite. Thanks we will be back
