Palazzo Alexander Hotel4.0 out of 5.0

Lucca has, for twenty-five years, been closely akin to Oz. Thought we were familiar with all the delights and enchantments, but we've met a new Wizard! His name is Mario and the Palazzo Alexander is the venue in which he works his magic (along with his son, Gabriele, and an amazing staff). We were a finicky group of four with all manner of special requests, quirks and needy "requirements". (Balconies, rooms near the lift, calls for transportation, multiple coffee demands!) Royalty could have been treated no better. Everything (Everything!) was fantastic. The rooms were splendid, the common areas elegant and charming, the breakfast a pure joy. This is an owner who is present and making certain that, unlike the Wizard of Oz, ALL that goes on behind the curtain - and in front of it - is just very close to perfection. Thank you so very much for a truly memorable visit. Cannot wait to plan a return visit.
This is a lovely, welcoming, quaint hotel with beautiful architecture and artwork. The family is responsive to all your needs and provides great advice and a warm welcome. We love Lucca, and this added to our enjoyment. The rooms are spacious (with opera names and accents), the breakfast is plentiful, and the location makes it easy to enjoy the city.
This was my second time staying at the Hotel Palazzo Alexander having stayed there last year and thinking that the hotel was fabulous. As good as it was last time it eclipsed my memories. The hotel is absolutely outstanding. From the moment one checks in you feel the warmth of the friendly and accommodating staff. They provide you with helpful information, assist you with parking and do everything in their power to make sure your stay is perfect. This impeccably decorated albergo''s rooms are brilliantly furnished and the mattresses are incredibly comfortable. The bathrooms are lovely and the WIFI connection is good. The Palazzo Alexander's American breakfast, which is included with the price of the room, is superb and the service fantastic. When you add the hotel's perfect location in Lucca, there is nothing not to like except for the fact that you have to return home. The hotel combines old world charm and service with modern day luxury - a rare combination in today's Italy.
My husband and I have just returned from Italy where for 9 days we had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Palazzo Alexander. The hotel and the staff are top notch and each of them added immeasurably to the ease and pleasure of our trip. From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly and tended to very well. The hotel owner, Mario, is a distinguished, caring man who along with his son Gabriele have a jewel of a hotel within the walls of Lucca. Each and every one of the staff with whom we interacted was friendly, courteous, helpful and knowledgeable. Mario gave us the most wonderful tips for driving tours. We had 3 separate day excursions plotted out for us by Mario and they were 3 of the best days we had of non-touristy sight-seeing. During the day trip up the coast that Mario recommended we got the added and unexpected bonus of running into Andrea Boccelli and a companion riding horses on the beach. Mario couldn't have known this would happen but because I am a huge Bocelli fan, this was such a treat. The room we stayed in was lovely (although I learned too late that there are rooms with balconies which we did not have...next time!) Right around the corner from the hotel there is a large parking field behind a locked gate (you'd never know it was there) so if you have a car, there is an easy place to park it (and you want this in Lucca if you have a car!...the last hotel we stayed at a few years ago in Lucca had parking in a teeny tiny garage that was very difficult to get the car in and out of). The rooms are furnished very nicely and everything is neat and clean. The showers are nice and hot and have excellent water pressure. The housekeepers are amazing...we loved Cristina in particular! The windows in the rooms have shutters (as many hotels and homes do in Italy) and when closed they kept the street noise to a minimum and kept the room nice and dark at night. My husband and I are both very light sleepers but slept so soundly here. It was such a pleasure to wake up well rested. The breakfast in the morning is an added bonus. We would get up early, head down to the dining area and fill up on delicious food, coffee and juice before heading out for the day. A tip we can give you as an aside, is that if you plan to bring a car (and you should consider it because as lovely as life is within the walls of Lucca there is so much else to see in the surrounding areas) please buy a GPS with European maps and bring it with you. We ended up buying one in Lucca...the road signs particularly off the autostrada are not great. The GPS was a life-saver. As you can tell, we highly recommend this hotel. Tell Mario we said hi when you go! :-)
We love this place and Mario as well. The breakfast is wonderful and wonderfully served. The room is very nice and there is an elevator! We stayed here 10 days with a Road Scholar tour and enjoyed it very much. In fact, we were able to send out our laundry and they took care of it.
On arrival at this quaint historical hotel we were greeted warmly by Mario, the owner. He escorted us to our room and carried my suitcase to the 4th floor. When he opened the door, we walked into a large room with antique wood floors and a marble bathroom. The furniture is in traditional Italian style with a large comfortable bed and pillows. The windows open and overlook the town roofs ( which is beautiful) Free wifi in the entire hotel. A buffet breakfast, which includes fresh fruit, bacon and scrambled eggs, cereals, yoghurt and a variety of breads. Lucca Cathedral and Guinigi Tower are both just a 10-minute walk away. Mario and his staff are extremely polite and helpful. I honestly have no hesitation in recommending this amazing, beautiful, well located hotel.
Pros: Good location, large rooms, friendly staff, nice terrace Cons: tired rooms, no shower head to hold handle (hand shower only), small breakfast (waiting for refills), old towels (very thin and one had holes)...not a 4 star hotel Ticks all the boxes for 4 star rating but have stayed at better hotels for same price in Chianti and in Cortona and couple with us stayed at a better hotel also in Lucca for same price.
Nice staff, beautiful city setting. Good value and accessible to Lucca city centre. Quiet and private but unfortunately no evening meal offering or parking in the vicinity for guests. Suitable for travellers and tourists alike
Spent one night here when visiting for the Torre di Lago festival of Puccini. The hotel is beautiful and a treat to stay at. The staff was super friendly, breakfast delicious, everything comfortable and pleasant, good value for your money. They've got parking in one of the nearby courtyards and our receptionist happily showed us the place. Do stay there, it's a great hotel!
When entering this hotel, one feels as if he/she is somewhat stepping back in time. Some may say that it is dated; rather it is a period piece of the late 19th century. The color of the walls, which some recommend to be repainted, is that which one would find in that era. The furniture is antique as well. Even the lovely coffee pot and cup and saucer provided during breakfast were antique china (what a special touch!) The location of this hotel is wonderful regarding the being within the walls of the city (it is a distance from the train station, however). The staff, who are predominately the owners-- a prime reason for the success of this hotel is the owner's attention to his property-- was helpful and kind. Every recommendation that they made was helpful and enjoyable. The room was comfortable and the shower which had a seat in it was absolutely wonderful. Breakfast was smaller than some of the larger hotels in Italy, but there was plenty of food and it was fresh (the melon was so sweet!). Again, I particularly enjoyed relaxing with coffee served in a lovely china pot and cup. I felt like a member of the aristocracy. If you are a fan of the large, high rise, 5 star, international chains, this may not be the place for you to stay. But if you want to experience 19th century Italy with 21st century amenities and wonderful service, Hotel Palazzo Alexander is a fantastic choice.
