The good: * Loved the historic building and its public areas * Loved the location directly opposite the palace * Breakfast was decent * Wifi was good * The staff were helpful and friendly, both on front desk and in the breakfast room * Parking was plentiful and free * The room was slightly old-fashioned and could probably do with an upgrade, but overall it was a positive experience The bad: * The bed was uncomfortable Overall: I would definitely return here if I was in the area. It is only 15 minutes drive to Sintra.

The property is quite awesome and is directly opposite the main palace building (now a museum). It is located some way out of central Lisbon, but parking is easy and the train station is a short distance to walk. The return fare to the centre was €2.10 (for seniors). We like to eat "with the locals" and there is a good bar 5 minutes away and a bit further up the hill is the Restaurante Retiro da Mina, which serves good local food (esp. pork and fish) at a very reasonable price. Service was good too. We ate there both nights.

My wife and I had pea soup that failed to taste fresh. I had a streak asked for rare which came in medium and my wife had monk fish with over corriandered Risotto the restaurant had a good ambiance with 7 tables filled. It was over priced but the house wine a Dap was good.

The pousada is perfectly located just accross the National Palace (without any parking problems), approx. 15 km from Lisbon and 15 km from Sintra. We expected a grand place, but it is actually quite modest, without any views. It is quiet, clean, huge room and fresh and modest breakfast. It worked for us, but do not expect a palace grandeur. The reception staff is extremly attentive and helpful.

Very different from our experience in the Viseu "mausoleum" and I mean that as a compliment. Lovely quiet room, well maintained daily and the staff were both friendly and helpful. The only drawback was the fact that dinner was served in the restaurant across the road and not in the main building. If you have time, take a train to Sintra, the station is only half a mile away and the staff in reception will give you easy directions.

A most charming Pousada and a welcome change from the previous one at Viseu which seemed more business orientated. Lovely helpful staff from the front desk to the waiting staff at breakfast and in the separate restaurant. Our room was very comfortable and though it was at the front of the building we had no trouble getting a good night's sleep due I think to good window shutters and heavy curtains. The temperature while we were here was hot but the room was beautifully cool. We took a trip to Sintra while staying here, the station is only about a ten minute walk, so very convenient if you want to travel there or to two of the Lisbon stations. Would thoroughly recommend.

This was our first time in a Pousada and chose it because of its location and proximity to Lisbon & Sintra. It's a lovely and historic place - full of character, quiet and understated but not full of mod cons. No bus loads of oriental tourists with noise, cameras and operating theatre face masks, and only a handful of complaining cacophonous New Yorkers. Excellent choice and quality at the restaurant and very reasonably priced. Great service from all the staff in both the hotel and the restaurant - especially our own waiter Nito Gomes who was polite, courteous and efficient throughout. Overall - a little bit of unassuming luxury at an affordable and realistic price.

This hotel is in the former staff quarters of the Palace across the road so one would expect it to be well run on organised and structured lines. But, sadly, far from it. The rooms are adequate albeit with uninspiring views of the road or barrack square. Breakfast is served in a bright room in the hotel building and offers reasonable variety. The breakfast staff are helpful and efficient as are the day-time reception staff. However, the young woman on duty during the evening had clearly not been trained – with scarce English she seemed to be left on her own to deal with all the hotel functions which, in our view, is simply not acceptable. She therefore struggled to offer bar service while also staffing reception – and her lack of training was all too evident when she did not know that they stocked vinho tinto so we had to point out the bottles on the bar shelf. However, this level of disappointing service was nothing compared to our dire experience in the restaurant Cozinha Velha which is where dinner seems to be served for this hotel. We write separately about this restaurant.

We stayed here in April for 3 nights and enjoyed the place apart from the fact that after requesting a double bed we got twins which they quickly remedied (there's only 3 in the whole place which accounts for falling birth rates 😉). The brekky was great and the staff really nice, especially Fatima in the dining room, however the hotel was overheated as were the wildlufe in the 'moat' at the front. Being greeted by foetid water at the beginning wasn't nice.

A well situated historic hotel especially if planning on visting the Sintra area. Our spacious suite was huge at this Pousada. It was a great start for our first stop on our two weeks/six Pousadas tour of Portugal. Our only conplaint would be that the rooms were stifling - windows can only be opened a crack with creative book stacking. Turns out that we thought we'd turned on the A/C, but this still being their winter schedule in mid-March, the hotel only uses heat when you turn the switch on - we didn't know this and suffered for it. Unfortunately, either way, the room would have been too warm (we didn't experience this in the other Pousadas we visited). Our front desk clerk was very helpful with check-in. Breakfast is in a cheerful, sunny room; the morning spread is tasty and wonderful. The staff is attentive throughout the hotel. We had a spectacular dinner across the way in the hotel's incredible restaurant.
