Situated on an amazing golden sand beach, which seems to be a major surfing attraction, with a surf shop and school located beneath the hotel. The hotel is really very unusual in comparison to today's norm. It has the feeling that it could have been copied from something in Mexico. It's a very infomal beach hotel, relaxed and chilled out with lots of things that are not quite perfect but are fine. Our room had a view of the beach, a massive comfortable bed, had good airconditioning /heating, plus plenty of storage, a good bathroom and shower. We stayed for 3 nights at the beginning of December and used the hotel as a base to explore the region. It was very quiet at this time of year but we could see it being extremely busy in summer. It had a really cosy area at the bar with a large wood burning stove and comfortable settees. They really only had a snack bar menu when we stayed which was fine. It is located approximately 4 miles from Cascais. There are walks in the area and a city bike rental opposite the hotel. There are a number of hotels, resturants and bars within walking distance. We really liked it. Its actually quite nice and a super place to unwind. Whilst I can understand some of the negative feedback don't let it put you off. So if you are looking for an ultra sharp, prestigious hotel, then it may not be for you. However it's a clean, comfortable and good value individual hotel in a great location and we will certainly go back off season.
The hotel is located on the beach and the room we had gave a beautiful view of the sea and beach. The hotel itself felt very dark, not enough lighting in the common areas and rooms. Due to its location and battling the elements along with the heavy sea breeze, the hotel outside shows a bit of wear and tear but i guess expected when you are facing the atlantic! We had specific reasons for picking this hotel - convinience to a local wedding we were attending. It is very convinient for surfing at the beach - lots of surfers get there very early to catch the waves. Nothing spectacular in summary. An average hotel. Regards Omar
A hotel with a difference, it was once used as a forte. Charming place with lots of character and nooks and crannies to explore but the best surprise was waking up in the morning and looking out of the window to see the blue sea and sky. The fit surfers riding the waves didn't go amiss either :P We were lucky enough to chat to the lovely owner of the hotel, who told us about the history of how his father originally purchased the forte from the King of Portugal. A dedicated area with pictures of the rich and famous guests stand proudly at the entrance. Would love to go back again.
If you love the sound of wave smashing against the shore, this is the hotel for you. The beach is sandy, but the wind was so sharp it was hard to walk across it... A great beach for surfing... not for swimming. The hotel pool is beside the ocean and occasion the spray from the ocean falls into the pool. It was cold, but we're Canadian so we are used to cold water. Dinner in the hotel was very tasty.
I've been coming here since my childhood. But since the 60s not many improvements have been made. It's old and tired. Bars dark and actually smelly! I wouldn't say it's the cleaned place, or doesn't looks so. Breakfast: same every day: packed ham and sliced cheeze! Not very imaginative. At 80 euros average per day: not even a bottle of water in the rooms. What compensates is the view of Guincho beach, and sound of it. No ambience here. Pity, as the spot is amazing. no wifi except bar and reception. Bad lighting with no bulbs almost through out the hotel.k
We stayed in one of the renovated rooms with view on the beach. Perfect. Although the hotel is a bit outdated and the breakfast can be skipped its full of character and the beach can't be beaten. Take breakfast at the beachbar instead. Top coffee and a good and cheap sandwich.
What a wonderful place! Just don't believe any of the negative reviews you read on here or anywhere. The hotel has got the most wonderful character built with love and great thought. Although it may be in need of a bit of updating, who cares when you're in the most wonderful location. The staff are so lovely, always a smile and a Bom Dia or Boa Tade! Paolo the Bar Manager makes the best Tequila Sunrise! This became my daily staple after a long slog poolside. Restaurant very reasonably priced and the food was good. We had a beach view and there was no tiring of it. Fantastic looking at the kite surfers, wind surfers and just surfers! Praia do Guincho is definitely a surfers paradise. The owner is a very nice gentleman and very proud of his hotel. He is very welcoming to all visitors. I would certainly recommend Estelagem do Forte Muchaxo to everyone who likes their hotel experience to have some character. The views are much prized. I look forward to spending another holiday there.
Do not believe everything that you read about this place, especially if it is negative. Of course expect the regular Portuguese service LOL - nothing special, however, they were really good with any of our special requests. The monkfish and cod were amazing. Being from Atlantic Canada, where we have access to fresh delicious fish on a regular basis, this place did not disappoint. The view alone is worth coming here, however, if you like simple fish and a really cool atmosphere, come on by. Oh, and it has the best sangria we have had since being in Spain.
A unique location - on the best beach in the area, at the foothills of the national park, with some of the best restaurants and historic sites in Portugal pretty much on the doorstep. If you want a poolside bar, modern bathrooms, bellboys etc, you will need to stay in Cascais town (and pay twice as much). It could definitely do with a lick of paint, but it is safe, clean and comfortable. I expect this will turn into a surfers ecolodge with gourmet coffeeshop in time, but not yet. Book a room with a sea view so you can hear the waves crashing and watch the kite surfers, fishermen and surfers-in-training. It's wild and windy - the most western point in Europe. A welcome retreat from the bright lights of Lisbon.
Ten minutes drive from the center of Cascais, a slightly dated hotel, but with all you need and not too expensive unlike most of Portugal on the coast. The pool is great and cut into the cliff side. The beach is beautiful, has full time lifeguards too. the hotel is a bit tired, but clean and the rooms were lovely, again with a great view of the beach. the restaurant also has the same view. the food was good and not expensive. The staff could not have been more helpful. I have read previous reviews complaining about the windows being dirty, not actually dirty, but the salt spray from the sea permanently means they are slightly foggy, not a thing that can be helped . The wind was pretty fierce while I stayed, so the spray was bad from the sea.
