I booked the hotel for a meeting. My family came with me at the last minute. The staff made them feel so welcome, gave them access to the pool and turned a tedious wait into a really lovely experience. The quality of the staff, service and welcome is outstanding. The meeting facilities were excellent as was the carvery lunch. Thank you for your kindness.
We stayed for a 2 night family break. We dont drive and found the hotel quite a distance from the town, but there is a food court next door that has coffee shops and a newsagent. We had a Family room and it was very spacious with a small double bed and 2 single beds, there was plenty of room left after 2 cots went in. There was a stain on the sheets of one of the single beds it looked like blackcurrant juice. The bathroom was clean, the shower a bit tricky to use but a good powerful spray from it. Unfortunately there was not stopper in the bath. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The breakfast was buffet style and very nice. Overall it's a place we would stay again. Thank you Maldron
We were coming from Wexford to Galway and we decided to stop off to stay in Portlaoise as it was getting late and we were tired. It was approx. 9.50 pm and I phoned ahead to book a triple room in the hotel. The receptionist quoted me a price of €95 seeing as it was so late. I told her we were coming from the Carlow direction and she said she would inform the night staff of our booking as she was finishing her shift at 10.00 pm. It was approx. 10.15pm when we got to the hotel and when we went to book in a rather arrogant gentleman at the desk grunted at me for my name. I gave him my name and explained that I had phoned ahead approx. 1/2 hour before that and was quoted a price of €95. He looked at me in disbelief and said that there was no way I could have been quoted that price. I explained my story how I had spoken with the receptionist that was going off duty at 10pm and she gave me that price. He was trying to charge me €159 at that hour of the night. He was so rude and obnoxious and said that he would phone the receptionist. He made me feel like I was a criminal just out from Portlaoise prison!!! He phoned the receptionist and came back to me with a sultry face saying that she had given me a price that the hotel was offering two weeks prior to that!! He reluctantly gave it to me for that price but at no point was any way polite, friendly, welcoming or even nice!!! He was enough to turn people away from the hotel with his rudeness!!!! I would have just walked out if he had tried to charge me any more. It wasn't even worth €95 for a triple room especially when we seen the room we were given!! First of all the tv had a very poor reception that it was nearly unwatchable. Then the floor in the room appeared grubby and filthy!! One of our party let some piece of jewellery fall on the floor and had to push the bed to get it.... OMG, I don't think the floor had seen a hoover in years with the amount of dirt underneath!!! There was even the remnants of a chocolate biscuit (or what we hoped it was because we didn't want to investigate further) underneath. Then when we went to the bathroom we were greeted with several hairs in the bath!! Would not recommend this hotel. There surely has got to be better places to stay in Portlaoise!!!
Stayed here on business for one night, chosen for its proximity to the motorway and location. Check in was efficient and friendly and I was staying on the 1st floor, seemed to be a quiet room. The room was spacious, plenty facilities, bed was comfy, the bathroom had the usual toiletries, lots of towels, seemed clean. A couple of things about the room let it down - broken tile on the floor of the bathroom not even taped over and if you were barefoot you could end up with a nasty scrape. The window of the room looked onto a flat roof area that was littered with cigarette butts that looked like they were there quite a while, which was disgusting. Otherwise everything seemed clean and well kept. Tried - the word being tried - to get food in the bar area that evening I arrived and the service was appalling. I had to ask for a menu (not an issue for me, I could see that the one staff member appeared to be covering bar service and restaurant service so didn't take offence!) but asking for a menu seemed to surprise the staff member, who then took about 10 minutes to remember to bring me the menu which was on the run and I didn't even get the chance to put in a drinks order. Add another 10 to 15 minutes waiting for someone to take an order. The solitary staff member I could see appeared to be doing everything themselves and didn't even come near me for me to ask for my order to be taken, I probably would have had to go find them...and this didn't set me up for any confidence as to what the kitchen service was going to be like so I just left and went to the food court next door instead. Breakfast next morning was unimpressive. The buffet of hot food was cheap, not very nice and was very limited. Good selection of fruit, pastries. Tea, coffee and toast, was self service. Due to location and convenience I would stay here again, but definitely wouldn't be getting any food from the hotel.
Where do i start?! Possibly the worst experience I have ever had in a hotel. And not the first from these guys either. I stayed recently on a work trip, not by choice! The first evening was fine - the hotel itself is a bit tired but I wasn't expecting much to be honest. The rooms themselves are basic. Well the next morning said it all. I had no work engagements until the afternoon so I thought to myself that I would have a lie in and do some work from my room in peace! Well that's where it all went wrong. 8.00am that morning there was a hive of activity in the hallway on the third floor, shouting and laughing and banging of doors right outside my room. I went out to see what was going on only to find about twenty people in the hallway chatting. So I got myself together and went for breakfast, walking past the crowd who where looking at me like I wasn't suppose to be there?! Came back to the room again to try get some work done to the same reaction. Ten minutes later what I heard could only be described as an air horn and a voice recording very loudly in the hallway only to go out and find speakers up and down the hall at full volume going off every 10 minutes (see picture). I have never seen anything like it in my life!! At this stage I packed up and went somewhere else. The food in the hotel is some of the worst I have ever had - a piece of fish that was rock hard in the middle and soaking in grease to the point where my plate was covered in it. The place is just a disaster and they clearly have no regard for their guests. Avoid if possible!
Love this hotel, no frills but staff are pleasant. It is clean food is always good but limited, no complaints (noise from motorway has been fixed by extra glazing),l. I would recommend for people travelling, not necessarily as somewhere to stay if you are looking for a view or within walking distance to anything.
We got a group voucher and booked in for salon treatments. We each got a back massage and quick facial. It was amazing and very reasonable. the two girls really looked after us. I wouldn't personally stay here as its too far out and you would need a car. However there are food places within walking distance.
Arrived late Friday evening, allocated our room and went straight to bed. However, before bed, kids wanted something to eat. Room service menu was in the room however advised not available. Went to go next door for something as noted signage stated open until 11pm to be told it closed at 9pm. Didnt let this destroy the weekend! Thoroughly enjoyed the food both breakfast and carvery on Sunday and kids eat free! The clubvitae pool, gym etc facilities were an excellent addition to the weekend. Woukd stay again! Sort out the food situation and this place would be excellent.
This was strictly business. I was on my own - no family, children etc. As such the staff responded to the few requests we had as quickly and efficiently as possible. And overall they were friendly. Yes I had a big peaceful room to myself - no noise - and that was very welcome. I have a feeling that this modern hotel is geared towards business people: 8am to 6 or 7pm. Like those ads you hear on the radio - M50 hotels, airport conference rooms and so on. If business is the purpose of your visit then I would imagine this is very good value. (I do not know the room rates - nor the meeting room rates with (really!) delicious brownie biscuits, coffee, still and sparkling water left there throughout meetings.) Lastly breakfast was fine - muesli, coco-pops!, coffee. I could not see the Vitality Breakfast - but maybe I should have asked i advance. Well done.
Stayed one night in this hotel recently, with my two children. We found all the staff friendly and helpful. The room was clean and of a decent size and the beds were comfortable. The room was overlooking the road and so was a little noisy. I would request a room at the back of the hotel if i was staying here again. The food let the hotel down, both dinner and breakfast, although plentiful was only about average.
