My husband and I came back from a wedding to have a quiet drink in the bar before going to bed. We bought a bottle of wine. No mention of closing time. Service was all brilliant. Halfway through our bottle of wine, a member of staff started shouting and I mean shouting at us, to go to reception to finish our drinks. (Her name "Mary") under normal circumstances, customers would be informed that the bar would be closing shortly and would people kindly move to the reception in 10 minutes. One doesn't expect to be screeched at instantly! I've never been spoken to so rudely by anyone. Our stay in the Madron was lovely apart from this incident with a most ignorant member of staff. I suggest a bit of training!
The good points - room was spacious, clean, plenty of tea, coffee, etc.Double glazing worked which was just as well as the room (113) overlooked the motorway. Bad points - car parking is not hotel specific - it is shared with a busy food court, and a gym, so there are public coming and going at all times from early morning to late evening. We complained as we had come with a classic car and were told to use the staff car park round the back, which was slightly better, but for the price we paid I don't think acceptable. On the Saturday night the hotel was busy with guests for a GAA match and there were gangs of children running round and knocking on hotel doors saying 'room service' before the match. I complained at reception because I was concerned and they said it would be ok later. Afterward there were drunks yelling and screeching until 2.30 am and nothing was done. On the Sunday night there was yellng until 11 pm, again nothing done. Several times we walked in and out and there was no one on reception so in theory anyone could walk in and go up to any rooms. We will not be returning. '
We stayed here for two nights over this weekend. The hotel is very clinical and the rooms basic. The girls on check in were very friendly, chatty and courteous - no problems there. The sleep quality was OK but we were right over a large car park with lots of buses and coaches unloading and loading. My biggest gripe and the reason for a one star review was that on the Saturday night we went into the bar for a drink. It is a very soulless bar, devoid of atmosphere. There was a guitarist providing entertainment but he was in a roped off area a long way away from where the main drinkers and listeners were gathered. I sensed it was roped off because the staff didn't want to have to clean all areas of the bar at closing time so they coralled everyone close together - and coralled the singer a long way away. They did a great job of making a soulless and clinical bar even more so! When they flashed the lights for last orders, some people left but there were many still drinking up. The people responsible for then cleaning (it was 12.30 on a Saturday night) then commenced screeching and bawling about drinking up and getting out. They were highly discourteous and loud and were clearly displaying contempt for the people that pay their wages. A few people started to shout back at them - I think they got the picture but no apology was forthcoming. I've never been made to feel so unwelcome in a place, and will most certainly never be back. To the management of this hotel, keep in mind the amount of travelling I do and reviews I write! This is not a first time review brought about by a horrendous experience, as so many dreadful reviews are, I review as I find.
The hotel is very conveniently situated just off the M7 near Portlaoise with plenty of parking. I arrived late to find no one on reception. I had to trek around the hotel to find someone to check me in. I left early the next morning. Again, there was no one on reception. The hotel is modern and clean but soulless. The rooms are standard / middle of the road. The hotel is situated in a motorway services area so the setting is grim. Stay if it suits you for business /travel but stay elsewhere for pleasure.
the room was clean and the hotel was well kept the sevice was good quality and the staff were friendly and helpful only complaint was there wasn't much to do in the area, so if you were to stay in portlaoise i would recommend it and would stay again.
Hi from very beginning At reception on arrival cold welcome but didn't expect a lot. We r working in hospitality our self(3 of us). Room excellent big bright. Not necessary clean but what it to enjoy cos weather was fab that time. Not mentioning dirty cups and caffe station and socks under bed. But anyway. Swimming pool staff very friendly and entertaining. Great time. Hotel located close enough to centre. Bfast time disappointing. Having booked b&b. Staff lady informed us our bfast is not included. At that time we didnt know if we should go to table which wasn't offered or wait until mistake of receptionist will be fixed. In the end we ve been apologised. Bfast lady not present at all. Only smiling to guests who she knew( some builders which were staying in hotel to) which by the way ve been everywhere so theirs eyes as well. Honestly I would think twice of having bfast again not good experience. After bfast we went to town, great time , nice pubs, some lovely locals. Back to hotel. Housekeeping tide up room. Nice touch. Fresh towels. Cool. We took taxi again to town for dinner. Kelly's Stake house great food. We were about to back around 11pm no taxi around centre. No locals to ask were to get it from. So we called hotel to give us number for local cabs. Receptionist man( night porter not really in to helping us but in the end he give us a mobile nr to somewhere who ve had phone off) not really helpful. We found taxi ourself after walking around. We back to hotel. We get in very easily. No one asked for name rm number. Give me idea anyone is welcome at midnight . So save. Any way again receptionist. Not realy friendly. But ve had no choice to deal with anyone alse. So after calling from hotel room phone , not being answered I decided to call from my mobile to reception to order our taxi for next morning. Next day we get read to leave. Checked out. No bye no hi no did we enjoyed what ever. We asked for receipt. We ve been given one only with charges for one night after all we stayed 2 nites. Some car arrived be4 our departing time with no taxi sign. Receptionist ( same night porter) didn't bother to let us no that this car is taxi. We asked our self to make sure. Would I back to your hotel? Maybe cos of fitness club and lovely town but i would skip bfast 🤓
We stayed here on Friday last. The hotel is located just off the Motorway which was very easy to get to. It is on a nice wooded area with plenty of trees around. The Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The Foyer is very clean. The rooms were very clean and spacious. Coffee and tea making facilities in the room (A biscuit would have been a nice touch). We ate in the Restaurant attached to the hotel. It was exceptionally good value and very nice food (€40 for 3 adults). The pool was very nice and big. One area of note is the Bar. It is a little strange in design. The Bar and restaurant are all one. The Kitchen is open so it looks like you are in a Cafeteria if you are facing the kitchen. I would advise that they block this area up and in the morning time bring out a mobile heating area for hot breakfast. Overall we really enjoyed it. Well done Portlaoise Maldron. The wifi was very good.
Stayed here for one night with my husband and 3 kids . Would not be back . The site when I booked said kids facilities the only thing for them was the pool . Luckily I was going to book two nights but decided against it . The bar is tiny no atmosphere and food only served from 5.30 . Waited 10/15 mins for service at the bar . We headed to our room at 7 o clock . There is a food court next door but it's pricey . I paid 140 for one night it was an additional 40 for breakfast . All in all not worth the money . Definitely not for families
The staff were very nice and helpful, I needed to move my booking, there wasn't any hassle in doing this. Hotel room was quite big, had a double bed and a single bed in the room.although the room was backing onto the motorway it was still very quiet. Bathroom was clean and spacious. The hotel bar is very very small, we had the one drink a decided to head into portlaoise town ( 5 mins away in a taxi, around €10) Nice clean, friendly hotel, bar let's it down a bit if you'd like to unwind there. Next door there's a food mall, suitable for different tastes.
Another Maldron hotel in need of a bit of investment in new sound-proof windows, mattresses and staff. Firstly, if you value your sleep don’t accept a room facing the motorway. The road noise is horrendous. When we checked in we went straight to our room to suss it out. The room was large and clean with a double and a single bed, lots of wardrobe space, plenty of towels and spare pillows. I checked the window and found the seal well worn so there was a breeze blowing in around it and the noise from the motorway was very obvious. I returned to the reception to be told because of all the events in town, the hotel was fully booked. I was aware that the other hotels were also fully booked so I took a like it or lump it approach and tried to make the most of our two night stay. What really got to me though was, later in the day, as we were waiting for the lift, the same receptionist was selling two rooms to people who had just arrived on spec!!! Another serious issue was the number of children (some as young as 3) running riot in the bar / restaurant area climbing on tables, pulling table settings to the floor and generally being a nuisance at 11pm. The three staff were run ragged trying to clean and set up for breakfast the following morning, serve from the bar and collect glasses. They seemed capable of chastising the children and sending them back to their parents but incapable of asking (telling) the parents to take control of their children or return to their rooms. No doubt these same parents would be the ones suing when little Johnny or little Mary split themselves open after jumping from a table!!! It also meant that the entire bar / restaurant area wasn’t relaxing or pleasant. The breakfast is a good array for a business hotel, well arranged and self service, except for the hot food which is served through a server school-dinner fashion by some very pleasant staff. The leisure centre was quite cramped – machines really on top of each other so it wasn’t a comfortable or pleasant place to be. Also management had a sign on the door informing that they were aware that some of the machines were out of action but a service call had been put in. I did not see any member of staff on the 3 occasions I used the leisure centre. The swimming pool was adequate but poorly supervised. Children kept encroaching on the swimming lane and neither staff nor parents were of any assistance. There are some positives for the hotel: there are hundreds of free parking spaces, it is immediately beside Junction 17 on the M7, it is ideally located for exploring the surrounding towns, countryside & mountains by car, and it is reasonably priced. While it seemed like a good value break, I won’t be wasting my money in this Maldron again.
